Origins get more choices and real personal endings. I did my first run with a custom and I enjoyed it, it was open to roleplaying. You get a better sense of who the party members are "supposed" to be if they aren't you but if you get to take them in different directions if you play as an origin.
Can't really go wrong but you do need to be willing to fill in your own blanks if you play an OC.
Also Fane by far has the most significant involvement in the main plot and I would recommend running him in your first party if you can swing an undead and their healing quirks.
