You'll be fine throughout the campaign, the open world patrol events make de facto groups without any communication, and strikes are matchmade.

The raid and the nightfall (a hard mode strike with modifiers for better gear as a reward) have a "guided games" function where solo players can queue up to be paired with clan members that will help them through those events.

PvP has matchmaking for everything but the super competitive mode, but matchmaking as a solo basically means you and 3 other solos are just gonna get steamrolled by a 4 stack.

There's a decent amount to do alone, but it's a much better game with a reliable group to play with.

Not on release. Destiny 1 was notorious for the amount of DLC it had. Glad they 'fixed' the RNG loot tables, but I heard they went in the other direction and now even the end game loot can be obtained without doing the raid. That and I already play Warframe and they scratch the same itch. I'd totally pirate it if possible though.

Instead of adding in enemies that flank and interact with environments, they just throw waves of enemies at you
Set pieces without destructible environment makes the game feel bland cause I spent a whole boss fight sitting in a bus and emptying mags into a bulletsponge

PvP is kinda ass - the way damage and health works in Destiny means everyone uses an Autorifle in PvP so it becomes very samey regardless of mode.

PvE is fun though, and it's great to warp into an area to do some specific task, seeing a patrol mission happening in the distance and ride in to help out someone struggling with it before going on to do what you were planning to do.

Also having people's "solo" missions happening in the same map as the multiplayer PvE adds some lolrandom shit when you're going from A to B.

If he plays through the single player he'll be at level 20 before it finishes and around 250 "power" in terms of gear dropped along the way, it's honestly the first game I've ever played where it feels like End Game would be more fun if it had been a little grindier (just a little, mind you) because it does feel like you finish the main story and the game just drops you up against a brick wall of progression after you hit 250 power, not even a matter of "grind" just that you have to start fucking around with clans and dealing with people's scheduling and shit to handle the raid otherwise the game has stopped.

This game is deeply flawed even more so than D1. A loot based shooter with no end game content, fixed rolls, 4 strikes, 1 (!) raid and 4 vs 4 pvp just doesnt work.
