I'm sorry, I love the old AVGN stuff as much as the next guy, but I just can't stand modern James anymore. The tone in his voice, his pitiful "acting", his receeding hair line, the fact that he hasn't realized that new AVGN is just shit, the clarity of his video camera, his obviously fake attitude... I can't even watch a single second of it. J&MM are sorta okay, but even then he barely ever has anything interesting to say anymore. Most of it results in the same "aha, yeah, aha, yeah... aha, yeah... yeah.. it's like, yeah, aha yeah" paste every week. And these Polybius videos aren't doing anything for me either. I know it's fake. He knows it's fake, we all know it's fake - we all know he's doing a Halloween spoof, but it's just depressing. It's hard to explain why. I guess it's because mid-quality helps hiding some of the imperfections in the video, especially on people's faces and features. High quality cameras make me feel like having the focus power of a microscope that shuts out everything else. It's a subtle feeling, but it's just not nearly as comfy. I guess I just connecting high quality productions with dishonesty in some fashion.

It's the same reason I can't stand watching newer Simpsons. The animation and drawings are much cleaner, more precise and detailed - but it somehow makes it look lifeless. The old, imperfect style had a certain charm. Doesn't help that Simpson hasn't been good in decades.

The sad thing is that people eat them up to no end. Try going to an office. You're bound to come across tons of people who have them all over their work desk. I'm probably going to get my ass blasted on here, but I think the exact moment the AVGN stopped being great and went mediocre to remain around that level was around the Batman review(s), not to say his work is bad or that episodes after it haven't been good but when I look back on his stuff, all the classics to me are before the Batman episodes and all the ones after it feel a little bit off, like he's not just making fun of a crappy game but trying to do twists and whatever on all his jokes which just bug me, I mean, don't fix what isn't broken, and complaining about dumb shit in video games will always be amusing to me, it doesn't need to be reinvented or have gimmicks thrown in, as long as it's an earnest complaint it'll be funny, we don't need to see someone pretend to get mad at something like Daydreaming Davy or just pick an incredibly easy target like Big Rigs.

Also, I miss the "comfiness" of the older videos where it's in the old nerd room, before he just started sitting on that black sofa thing, it just feels kind of weird and impersonal, like you aren't just watching someone play video games and get mad at them but more like you are watching a show on a set. It's hard to explain and probably a sign I have an autism but it has always bugged me.

I think you are right, having too much detail makes things feel strange and kind of sterile instead of welcoming. The Simpsons has it really strange in that all the backgrounds, new characters and even new outfits for The Simpsons have tonnes of detail that are just in so much contrast with the low-detail look of the main characters, it's really quite distracting sometimes and that's even outside of how lazy they are with the animation, composition of shots, colouring, voice acting (though I can't blame the actors too much) and writing.
