So are indie games truly the patrician's choice in today's world?
To succeed in the indie community you actually have to make great shit. To succeed in the AAA world you need flashy cinematic trailers, unoriginal gameplay, and lootboxes.
The stuff between AAA and indie seems to be disappearing altogether, too. Very few promising middle-budget games are under the radar right now.
Honestly it seems like only indie devs (and maybe Nintendo) still care about the player.

>Nintendo >caring about the player lmao good one

If you're a oldfag that still hasn't abandoned their standards for game quality yeah. Most of the kids now will buy anything within the low quality low effort sterile tripe these companies put out now and be satisfied with at least something.
I'll openly admit indie games have their share of problems but overall they're still better games for actual gameplay
Elijah Nelson
They are pretty much the only ones doing original stuff nowadays or at the very least clones of series abandoned by AAA companies. The downside is that you must dig through a mountain of shit but theres some stuff thats worth supporting.
Jordan Ross
Yes, unfortunately. Indies are good, but they're very limited in scope by low budget.

friendly reminder that Switch lacks essential features of modern gaming: >web browser is missing >no cloud saving
Joshua Watson
But it releases high budget games that aren't complete dick.

>To succeed in the indie community you actually have to make great shit. What, no you don't lol. 99% of indie success is about knowing how to market your game without spending a shit ton on it. I know the game gets shit on for stupid reasons a lot but Gone Home really is an amazing example of this, it's so minimal and so short and there is really nothing impressive about it in any way. Yet it sold what, 500k copies on Steam? They made a couple million bucks on that game, I guarantee it, and it's not because the game is great or even good but because they did a good job of selling it to people as 1) High Art and 2) On The Right Side Of History.
The growing gulf between AAA and indie stuff is a real problem yeah, but there is no reason to believe that indie devs care about the player as a group, some do but many are just in it for the money like anyone at EA is. Too, this can blend together into an ungodly soup of shit like with No Mans Sky, where the nothing-to-lose attitude of indie devs was married to the marketing juggernaut of Sony and delivered fucking nothing to the tune of colossal financial success.

How is a good title limited in any meaningful way compared to something like assass creed 18 or Destiny 1.000002?
Zachary Lee
The 2D indies are all for the most part trash aside from La Mulana. It's not high standards that keep you playing 2D, it's nostalgia and depression.
Also, plenty of good AAA games came out this year.
Hudson Robinson
I find Nintendo games to be as derivative as any other AAA studio's.
Jose Hill
The fact that people that say this always cite like 1 of 2 games from like five years ago doesn't really prove their point very well. With indie at least there's a chance of something good instead of just a guaranteed dumbed down microtransaction platform
James Jenkins
>There are no good 2d indie aside from La mulana Stop talking out of your ass
Lincoln Hall
I don't think that's really the case with indies anymore. Yeah sure, around the time when Kickstarter gained traction you really could release anything and there would be an audience for it, but nowadays you do have to put in effort. Compare Gone Home and all the buzz around to versus Tacoma which was kinda forgotten a day after release, for example.

Name some compelling 2D indies then. I think the latest 2D game I enjoyed was Hard Corps Uprising and that isn't indie.
Austin Garcia
I totally agree.
Jonathan Adams
Cupguy is a good game.
Wyatt Perez
No, the patrician choice is retro games. The nu-male choice is indie.
Oliver Barnes
Didn't play yet, maybe it will be. It seems like an exception at least.

To be fair walking simulator had their brief moment in the spotlight, but they're long forgotten now.
