The atmosphere is amazing. The survival aspects also made the entire experience for me. By the end of the dlc my courier had both legs and an arm broken was on low as fuck hp and had no ammo and had to fight with only a knife.

I suppose so, I think the main reason why I enjoyed it was due the the SINK's personalities along with the voice acting by Doctor Mobius. I still quote some of those lines like a fucking autist. My point being if those failed to impress I guess there wouldn't be much to enjoy.

dead money is pure kino, everything new vegas can do well is emphasised here and it has an excellent backstory and characters

honest hearts has a lot going for it but falters because of the mediocre quests

old world blues is really good the first time you play it but has nothing compelling when you return to it

lonesome road felt really unremarkable to me every time i've played it, ulysess is an okay character but he's severely overhyped and overwritten, the gameplay isn't very good or distinct from the rest of the game

Because for those of us who don't the attention span of goldfish, it's incredibly obvious what OWB does. It starts of with a very light and comedic setting, almost cartoonish in its absurdity. Then, very quickly, you are presented with some of the horrible things that this comedic world holds. You see the lobotomites that the Think Tank themselves created, the insane jealousy present in the high school training course, the skeleton driven environmental suits, etc. The tone shifts to more of a dark comedy and the light laughs are used to brush aside the deaths.

Then, as more time goes on, you start to see the reality hidden beneath it all. You find Borous's basement filled with cages used to hold small animals for torture and dissection, you find the prison camp that held asian Americans for torture and execution, the fact that the horrors of Dead Money were created in the there, and the ultimate truth that the absurd world of the Big MT is the result of an attempt by Mobius to contain the Think Tank. The comedy is a facade, a bright and shiny coat of paint covering a literally apocalyptic arrogance, xenophobia and greed. It's the perfect time capsule of the Old World, and the sins that nearly burned the Earth to ash.

Can someone who liked Lonesome Road explain what they found appealing in it?

The atmosphere of desolate destruction is pretty good. It makes some of the more challenging enemies (ie Deathclaws) looks even scarier.
The loot is for medium armor characters that don't use power armor. They offer factionless alternatives to NCR Veteran Ranger Armor that can be stronger.

Honestly my take on it is that it feels the closest to the older isometric Fallouts, with the darker lighting, brown colour palette, and overall difficulty. It's the part of nu-Fallout that I think would/could translate the best to the isometric view.

i think as you get more familiar with the game the hardcore nature of dead money stops being an insanely oppressive challenge and starts being a welcoming change of pace

it also has the effect of reading a book for the second time where you have the general idea of what happens and can really appreciate the details

The miniguns in NV fucking blow, to be fair

The miniguns are amazing, you just need to have lots of Str. They're super-accurate (Avenger and modded regular minigun have less spread than Bozar) and the innate -10DT 5mm ammo has makes a world of difference. Stuff them with 5mm AP, which is super-common, and the only enemies with enough DT to resist are maybe BoS paladins.

Well I'm about to start up New Vegas for the first time since it came out. I only played it for about 24 hours then moved on.

Is vanilla New Vegas broken in anyway important I should know about? I saw there were some mods touting they fixed things, but wasn't sure if they just fixed bugs or if it was one of those "we fixed bugs but also radically changed a bunch of quests" kind of mods. If not I'll just keep the install as is, I'd like to finally beat a Fallout that isn't one of the isometric games for once.

Get the unofficial new vegas patch and it's pretty stable.
Shitty engine can still randomly get a stroke though
