Then gamergate kicked in and made them drop all of these features for being too "progressive" and forced them to stay with a more traditional formula.

Sean murray went on fucking TV and showed the game off. The game demo they had had multiplayer, loads of plants and animals, giant space battles, they showed this shit off in real time. That means it was coded, the work was complete, but gamergate forced them at gunpoint to remove it for being too revolutionary and it would destroy the japanese game market.
