I want to make a video game.
It would be a story driven, turn based RPG with first person dungeon crawling.
I have absolutely no relevant skills to making this actually happen.
Where do I start?

open unity and start making shit
>first person dungeon crawling
yuck
Googling how to make much more simple games and practicing doing that
Bump
same thing op asks I have a lot of fun ideas I want to fuck around with, but I can't code, don't know how it works, don't know how engines work, don't know how to do anything basically.
Start by making warioware/mario party style mini-games. You'll get an idea of how things comes together, and can make something more ambitious once you start getting bored of making simple games.
I don't know a damn thing about engines either, is Unity the one for making 3d games? Because this would be all 2d.
That might change, I just want the feeling of actually being in a dark and dangerous place which I feel you can really give with an overhead map.
Yeah, I plan on making little test games first, the thing in the OP was just my end goal I'd be working toward.
>story driven, turn based RPG
lol
...
No one would want to play your "game" even if it was made by 90s Square
...
Last guy who tried what you want to do spent 20 years developing his game.
use python3 for leetle baby projekt
>I don't know a damn thing about engines either, is Unity the one for making 3d games? Because this would be all 2d.
It's good for both, relatively easy to learn and powerful. Also free.
Unity does 3D and 2D. You can do 3D in a 2D scene or 2D in a 3D scene if you really wanted - just a matter of tweaking your matrices.
How do you get up here?
Do not start by trying to make your dream game. You will make so many rookie mistakes and it will turn out horrible and make you want to kys yourself.
Start small with something like Snake, then do something else small, then try something simple in 3d, then do something else in 3d.
Once you're comfortable with programming and making assets, that's when you start on your dream game.
Well I'm not going to wow anybody with graphics, revolutionary gameplay, or AAA quality, but story I think I can do something interesting there. Asforit being turn based, well I just like old turnbased games so why not?
Whoa, it isn't going to be that long, my ambitions do have some minor contact with reality.
Is there a druid at the back of that top window?
Wallrun
>first person
>2D
Explain
Not OP, but come on man.
Thanks will download today and start listening to some basic tutorials. Really the dungeon crawling part would be the only time you really are moving around, as the over world would be menus and static backgrounds, so I'm sure it will be more than enough for what I have in mind.
Would you suggest I still make 3d practice games even if I don't plan to use it for the main game?
post your story/plotline so i can steal it
Double Jump.
Legend of Grimrock 2 has an editor.
But its real time not turn based.
go near the ledge and press E while looking at it
So what's the gameplay like? No gameplay, no game.
first person
Basically this guy goes from the city to a small Midwestern town for his mother's funeral, and when going through her things finds out about all of this secret conspiracy type stuff relating to the catastrophic outbreak of a strange disease a decade or so ago. As it turns out, it was caused by a type of monster that lives in underground caverns below the town. Also magic powers are just a thing and the protag has them. He teams up with some locals who are in on the secret to explore the underground and stop a second wave of the disease from spreading. Each of his party members have their own quest lines that are sorta like routes in a VN though, like finding a killer or investigating the mega Corp that basically owns the town, etc. which all tie back into the main story.
Found the kid with shit taste
yeah that sounds like a night in the woods
The main deviations from completely standard systems is that the six party members are pretty specialized, so with a three man party, some set ups are objectively better for some areas/enemies. Also I want a lot of little details to switch things up, like one of the members having asthma, and taking a debuff when in the "fire dungeon" because of the heat and minor smoke, or another who is a night owl so they don't get the standard small debuff if you go into a dungeon at night. Just little things to make it feel more nuanced I guess.
Never played it, but it wouldn't surprise me if the general concept has been done before, since that is the case with every story. Hell, I'm deliberately invoking Persona with the story.
Have you played etrian odyssey OP?
So what's the base system for you turn based system? There are tons of turned based systems out there with different focuses. Those nuances would be meaningless in some systems and very important in others.
What are some games with surreal architecture with a everyday aesthetic, like in OPs picture? I've had dreams where I phased through walls into IKEA-wood corridors lit by opaque windows, with fourth dimensional geometry and the occasional window into a small glass-roof gravel courtyard with threatening wooden statues.
I was just playing the demo for V actually, but I've never played one for real. Seems alright so far, would you recommend it?
Oh, right, right. See at first I wanted it to be on a grid like some SRPG, but I think I'll just go for a standard two sides facing each other down thing. That is mostly because I'm worried about trying to use a more complex system but that could very well change as I start working on it.
I guess just climb up from the counter on the left or something.
i unironically want stupid shit like this in my house because im autistic or something
>story driven
>turn based RPG
>no relevant skills
Rpgmaker is unironically the best thing to use in this scenario. Pick up either VXA or MV, scavenge for some graphic ressources so it doesn't have the bland look of the default ressources, and you're set.
And apparently im too autistic to get my spoilers right
Keep playing the demo to see if you like, I would recommend, the little events that can happen in the dungeon are really cool little things I think you might enjoy from the look of things
I'm not even sure whether you're serious, because this is the premise of all RPGMaker garbage. Either go with badly drawn porn or a storyline that sounds deep to a teenager, and this board will eat it up.
I want to make a video game.
It would be a story driven cooking game with cute girls.
I have programming skills from studying Computer Science and basic knowledge in 3D modelling. I would probably learn how to draw and do pixel art since since the game would be 2D.
Lately I've spent every day browsing Sup Forums and playing video games instead of actually starting work on the game.
Send me reaction images which could change that.
I can give it a look, but can you actually learn how to make games with RPGmaker? Also I don't want to come to a situation where I'm 70% done and think of a feature to add, not to find it can't work because of the restrictions of the program.
Will do.
You know, I'm not looking for fame or especially money... I just have an idea in my head I want to realize. I want to make it as good of a game as I can, but obviously I know not everyone would like it.
...
...
Play Wizardry
No, you don't learn how to make games with RPGMaker, GameMaker or any of those tools. You can make a game with it, but you will be very restricted by the engine's limits. Use it for small projects if you've never done anything before. It's cute to play around with, but you won't learn much.
If you want to get serious with it and make it your profession at some point, you will need to learn programming. C# or C++ is a good bet. Even so, you will not have any artwork, models, music, sound effects, etc. Either you have to learn how to do these yourself (this will take years before it's even decent), use public domain assets or hire/ask someone to do it for you.
>I wasted my time learning a programming language, so everyone else should too
If I had cappy I could get up there
Make him an anime girl and I'll pirate it
No can do, but five of the six party members are cute girls.
