I think this is more of a Japanese thing, I can't think of any Western games that do this. Hell, I can't think of many Western games that even have spinoffs.

I would say fallout new Vegas, but we could argue that it was the honest attempt to be the third installment of the series.

Assassin's Creed started as Prince of Persia spin-off (PoP Assassins) but I guess it doesn't count because they changed the name mid-development.

Both series' "3D" installments were a massive shift in design, that left predecessors in the dust.

I disagree. Once you've gotten out of the tutorial for an SMT game, you've seen every gameplay mechanic it has to offer.
Persona at least introduces new stuff along the way. Or at least 5 did. 3 kinda sucked in that way.
