JRPG vs WRPG

JRPG vs WRPG thread

>implying WRPGs are superior

If WRPGs now were actually like your image portrays them (they're not) then they would be superior

Yeah, give that purple elf a manjaw and stubble and then it would be accurate.

wrpgs have man faced tumblrites that want to fuck, not qt demon grils

Almost spot on. Just change the girl for the WRPG now to an ugly, but empowered female.

...

What about space RPGs?

What are some JRPGs with choices? I'm not asking for an SMT branching system for everything, just at least something like Persona where you can interject once in a while to break monotony.

>assistants are chaotic good

Why is the west so shit at coming up with original settings?
It's funny how everyone is also jumping on the northern/scandinavian landscape meme now that Skyrim was a huge success

Old WPRG: Best gameplay
New WRPG: Best open world
Old JRPG: Best story
New JRPG: Best waifus

>New WRPG: Best open world

um... sorry no

Metal Max

Tactics Ogre
Phantom Brave
Atelier
Valkyrie Profile
Metal Max
SaGa
Langrisser
Growlanser

And many, many others, you have around 30 games from this list alone.

Sucks shit compared to Elex even as far as verticality goes.

Even Fallout 3 is less of a barren wasteland than BOTW.

>today, i will remind them

LOL
O
L

is someone still playing ss13?

...

not even as good an open world as bing bing wahoo, people have already forgotten about it, stay seethed

>Old WPRG: Best gameplay
But that shit was so bad skipping combat was considered a REWARD

>implying tolkien is bad

What is up with the lack if genuinely good art design in WRPGs? Not saying all JRPGs have good art but it looks like westerns ones genuinely don't give a fuck about art.

You're right. You'd have to be autistic to like FO3 or Elex.

Literally these.
Planescape has the absolute worst combat in any RPG I've encountered.

>no vtmb modern fairy tale
>no fallout post apoc
>no dark souls low fantasy
>no dragon's dogma low fantasy
>bottom left image is called tolkein fantasy not high fantasy

I'm on to your tricks!

No, you have to be autistic to like the barren world of BOTW devoid of anything interesting and filled with generic breaking weapons that only have like 3 types of moveset.
It's a fucking disgrace, a travesty of a zelda game and some of the worst 50 hours i've ever spent on a game.

warning: the only people who post in awful bait threads like this are retards. If you're not a retard, stay far away from games like

>that filter
Hold on I avoid botw threads in general but I thought this was a Wii U hdmi output issue? Why does the final game look like what everyone was insisting was an issue with how the Wii U output to recording devices?

Are you implying Dark Souls and Dragon's Dogma are Western?

What's wrong with those games?

You skipped Chrono Trigger. Probably the best example. Also Atelier is shit don't go recommending that to outsiders. That shoverware tier shit is what turns people off from JRPGs to begin with.

The Ogre games are good, SaGa Frontier 1&2 are definitely still worth playing especially for choice.

I should really get down to finally playing Valkyrie Profile.

No? I'm implying JRPGs have low (Tolkein) fantasy too. That should be pretty fucking obvious.

>Probably the best example.
If you think CT is better than any of those games at giving choices you probably haven't played any of those or have a very vague idea of CT's "choices".
>Also Atelier is shit don't go recommending that to outsiders.
If he can stomach trash like Persona he can deal with Atelier just fine.

CT has like 20 endings my dude. All 100% reflective of choice ranging from the immediate (activate the bucket, go to end boss early) to subtle and over time (to give or not give the mayor jerky, Robo's 100s of years tending the forest).

Every bit as varied as something like SaGa and infinitely more accessible.

Planescape had cool character design even though the shit visuals couldn't really do it justice.

>muh nintenddies geimu!

White supremacy

fixed.

...

I think there's a lot more emphasis around the art design in their characters in Japanese game development.

Elex looks and runs like shit. Don't even try to meme this game. The gameplay looks like Kingdoms of Amalur but worst

That's great user.

Why is the JRPGs now segment stuck in 1997? Cutscene heavy useless attacks reflect FF7, as does the general look of the party there. But Persona, Xenosaga, and Dark Souls are the modern JRPG, not PSX era final fantasies. Persona has little waste in terms of combat options, and nothing really over indulges in lengthy attack animations anymore.

>no beard hair

wow

>no CE

10/10

too sad it's so god damn accurate

...

The Japanese do not have the expertise and resources to create robust battle systems. Square Enix is the only company with enough money to do this, and even their battle systems are like 10 years behind most western developers.

Battle systems are actually very expensive to develop. From motion capture, engine tweaking for precise hit detection, nuanced economy systems to track progression...

>CT has like 20 endings my dude.
CT had 16 endings, and that's stretching it since a few of them are the same exact ending with a minor variation, the vast majority of which are jokes ending you get from a checkpoint in which you make no "choice" other than fight the final boss here and then.
In this sense it's similar to Metal Max, which often gives you the choice to end the game at some point by taking a specific choice, mostly related to settling down with some character, and even so it's tremendously more limited than even Metal Max since at least in there you can do anything you want in the order you want.
If you want to compare it to other RPGs with proper routes like Growlanser then CT just pales in terms of choices because you have almost no agency at all.
Then there's games with no proper routes, like SaGa, Gunparade March, Zill O'll and whatever else, which again, put CT to shame in terms of agency, event variation and choices.

And even by playing the ending card, stuff like Star Ocean or again, Zill O'll, have around 60 endings, so again, CT is on the low part of the spectrum even for that.
>Every bit as varied as something like SaGa
You probably haven't played many SaGa games considering most of those don't even have multiple endings to begin with.
And I wonder how it can be even remotely as varied as a game with multiple MCs with their own stories, cast and non linear progression with events that change dynamically depending on a lot of different player inputs and even have different endings, and SaGa games aren't even the better games when it comes to player agency, outside of one or two exceptions, so I don't know why you picked those of all things when I mentioned stuff like Growlanser.
>infinitely more accessible.
Which isn't really a good thing.
Saved

>only good battle system are non turn based ones

What? Everything I listed has well developed battle systems ranging from well done turn based, to MMO-like hotkey shit, to one of the best action RPG combat systems of the decade.

The fuck you on about?

Do any jRPG's actually have engaging combat systems? I am a westaboo but I try to have an openmind, but this is probably what disappoints me most when I try a jap game.

Try the action RPGs like dragon's dogma, otherwise it's just looking at menus.

west can't make good classic turn based RPGs

They can only shit action games with a "RPG" name slapped on it because it has leveling system. The fags would have the nerve to call devil may cry an RPG because you buy moves and skills

"engaging" is vague as fuck senpai

>From motion capture, engine tweaking for precise hit detection, nuanced economy systems to track progression...
What.
These are such non-main factors, have you ever made a game?

aRPGs like Ys or Dragon's Dogma or whatever, or sRPGs like Front Mission or Final Fantasy Tactics (if you like those, western sRPGs like Xcom or Jagged Alliance are also fantastic). You could also try experimental titles like Vagrant Story or Resonance of Fate, although the latter is a one-trick pony.

Why do you keep posting about growlanser when 4/6 games are completely linear and the other 2/6 just let you choose between two routes?

SaGa games have probably the most solid, deep and fleshed out systems when it comes to turn based stuff, but they're not for brainlets.

If you like ARPG then there's little I can do for you outside of mentioning things like From's RPGs, Ys, DD or Tales of, which are infinitely better than any western ARPG on the battle side but often fall short of RPG elements in terms of player agency on the other side.

Why avoid the second one?

quality of life changes introduced in following games make it unplayable. If you really want to enjoy it in a way more balanced and polished experience stick to Untold 2

I think Persona 3 and 5 have great battle systems that feel great and flow really well.

jrpgs now are generic high school self-insert with a harem and waifu love meters.

clearly that's what bravely default, radiant historia, etrian odyssey, elona, tales of berseria, last remnant or dragon quest are about

Because the non linear ones are more non linear and have more player agency than most SaGa games, which instead of giving you more significant player agency in terms of event variations they give you a completely different main quest, protagonist and cast.
Is that so hard to understand?
The only games which do surpass things like G4 in terms of player inputs are Romancing SaGa 2 and the last game, Scarlet Grace, and Romancing SaGa 2 still has one ending either way.
Sure, there's some other games that are also a lot better than Growlanser in terms of player agency, non linearity, endings and whatever, but they're "obscure" JP titles only, like Gunparade March or Zill O'll and there's no use in mentioning games nobody here ever played or will play.

SMT series?

planescape was pretty good

vampire was pretty alright

i like video games

Fuck you.

Fixed

>i like video games
how dare you

>Untold 2 is in play
Every Untold game should stay in optional. Even if they make Untold 3, I would still say it should be in optional.
Also I don't get the meme of IV being the best for new players. To me, IV was honestly extremely boring and was a total slog, especially the airship shit.

>JRPG
>everyone looks like faggots

>WRPG
>everyone is a faggot

>than most SaGa games
wow it's fucking nothing

The "choices" in growlanser are just good/bad results from minor events, it's like saying a game is player driven because they can choose to do optional sidequests. Even if you get the 'bad' result from your choices it doesn't actually affect the game in a meaningful way. It's like in ff6 you can "choose" to save shadow or "choose" to save cid or you can "choose" to pick up some treasure before it disappears but it's not really what people mean when they talk about a player driven story.

I bet you just like it for the porn. Might as well play rance instead so you can 'choose' to rape the maids.

kek

your opinion is unwarranted and shit

You must be fun to hang out with

I want to replay 1 but heard Untold ruins the plot. Does Untold's classic mode keep the story as it was back on DS?

You're probably someone who makes waifu parties or self-insert parties, aren't you, you unoriginal shit.

Intro for Untold has a major spoiler, and tones down some of the dialogue a bit in a few instances.

>World war 2
>Has jousting sticks

>Modern fantasy
>Looks like it's from the 1800s

???

>The "choices" in growlanser are just good/bad results from minor events
Except in games like G4, which are the ones I'm specifically referring to.
>I bet you just like it for the porn.
Not really, there's not even a lot of it and I don't like Christopher that much.
I like G4 especially because much like the first Langrisser it has also a legit evil route where you slaughter your former friends, and it has quite a lot of events with various choices and outcomes too.

Creativity. Same reason Warcraft elves are nocturnal Greek Koreans with Celtic and Native American overtones.

>when some (you) addicts try to piggyback on the success of others

Don't you guys have some Chad vs virgin edits to make?

>>Looks like it's from the 1800s
Thats just some restaurant in the game. The rest of the game takes place in a backwater town.

the first langrisser doesn't have an evil route. der langrisser is the only one with proper branching paths (langrisser iv has routes but they're dumb).
I'll give growlanser iv credit for its evil route (even though it's ng+ only what the fuck) but other choices don't really mater. Sure you can save christopher and a bunch of other npcs but that doesn't even lead to different battles. It's the same as finishing a mission with a mission clear instead of complete, nothing changes.

Didn't even see that it was posted and I thought i'd be somewhat original
The first edit is much superior tho

Both are going out of style. WRPGs are becoming Action RPGs and JRPGs are becoming social sims.

everything about that pic is perfect

...

I think JRPGs are straight up better because I can come up with titles off the top of my head I can strongly recommend, can't say the same with WRPGs. I can't recommend any Black Isle game because the combat is all ploddingly slow, shallow and the writing ranges from amusing to Monty Python references. I also can't recommend a lot of older JRPGs for similar reasons but they at least have music and aesthetics going for them. When JRPGs got more modern Japanese devs experimented a bit more so we got things like Vagrant Story while WRPGs were still fucking around with d20 systems. If someone wasn't interested in obligatory "classics" and just wanted to know what JRPGs or WRPGs I'd recommend based on a combination of gameplay and novelty I'd say

JRPG
The Last Remnant
Soul Nomad and The World Eaters
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter

WRPG
Arcanum
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Alpha Protocol

nigga i made that edit long before the other guy did. look it up in the archive

You're discounting Unlimited SaGa way too much there.

...

Growlanser, not Langrissser.

As a fan of both series, I don't see how the Growlanser/SaGa comparison stands. Very different games.

To chime in on that Growlanser/SaGa comparison! that obsession with endings rather than different game play experience is weird.

...

>I was trying to remember if it was true or not for nintendo RPGs.
> Remembered the train section in TTYD and the ghost diary.
Almost no other devs accept to be dicks at points you wouldn't expect.

DISCUSS

>Avoid the first one and the best game in the serie

What the fuck.
