>muddy, obscured graphics >unintuitive controls >half-assed translation >the game doesn't know whether it's supposed to be funny or serious >weird pacing >TERRIBLE FUCKING minigames, some taken straight from Chrono Trigger
Explain to me Sup Forums, how is this game so universally revered? The story, characters and the basic gameplay (Materia system) seem fine, it's those little things that completely deteriorate my experience. I've been playing this game for 13 hours now, I'm at Gold Saucer, and up until now I can't really call it anything but mediocre, and this is coming from a person who loves jRPGs, including all the previous Final Fantasies.
I've been hearing the same mantra for the last decade about how revolutionary and ahead of it's time it was, but apart from the visual presentation I really can't see what it does that the previous games in the series didn't do before. Emotional, almost cinematic and character-heavy stories date back as far as Final Fantasy IV, which although rudimentary gameplay-wise, was much more deserving of being called revolutionary. The opposite is true for Final Fantasy V, which featured some amazing party customization system, which seems to be way more balanced and fun to develop than Materia.

You've got autism kiddo

>unintuitive controls No.
Nolan Fisher
So many cases of "press down to go right". Of course it's unintuitive. Controls are botched, and you have to admit that.
Jonathan Campbell
No, I don't. It takes half a second to reorient yourself.
Ethan Lewis
Not if you just entered a new location and you unexpectedly reenter the previous one because the perspective is skewed and the controls don't match the directional buttons. It's shit, it's annoying, and it shouldn't force the player to "reorient" in every damn location.
Jordan Turner
Because of pathetic nostalgia, that's why.
Kayden Evans
>I'm at Gold Saucer, and up until now I can't really call it anything but mediocre Like all FF games. >FFV >Amazing party customization system

sixfag spotted
Asher Howard
this,EVERY TIME it's a 6 fag criticizing 7
Aaron Jenkins
This game was only "good" because it was a revolution when it came out, playstation 1 and that 3D. Everyone knows it's dogshit but like every popular shit games it has its cult of retards.
Move on.
Asher Nelson
You know it bro, I won't hide it. However me liking 6 or any other Final Fantasy game doesn't render my criticism invalid. I really wanted to love seven and I still intend to finish it and experience it to the highest extent. It just goes out of its way to annoy me with minor shit here and there.
Angel Morris
How is it possible you haven't played this game until now? Are you 7 years old?
Ayden Murphy
I'm 23. I did try it couple of times beforehand, reached about the same point as now and lost interest.
Parker Carter
>muddy obscured graphics not bad, especially when you get out of Midgar. Can't expect much from a game made in 1997. >unintuitive controls not true >half-assed translation the case for most 1990s JRPGs >the game doesn't know whether it's supposed to be funny or serious see above >weird pacing if we're comparing 6, there were parts that were a slog
Recovering Nintenbro, too young or too poor in 1997, really strict parents, any number of valid reasons
Elijah Campbell
Yes FF7 is shit. The neverending staircase cinematic alone is one of the worst things ever in vidya. Play a good JRPG like Breath of Fire
Eli Bennett
>Can't expect much from a game made in 1997. Crash Bandicoot 2 came out this year. No excuse.
Charles Cox
Teenager's first game. And nostalgia googles.
XV is the best FF game ever made.
Grayson Howard
Why was 6 afraid of 7?
Ryder Foster
come on man I was 13 when this released and had no issues with anything you mentioned.
Replayed for the first time again earlier this year and it still holds up.
Matthew Miller
Am 21. Played it for the first time last year. No nostalgia. Loved it. Valid complaints, but none of them really mean much matched up against a 40 hour game that is, for the most part, incredibly well designed
Michael Ward
Why do people post about games released the year they were born or before they were born and expect them to handle and have support like something from the current generation?
Jason Gonzalez
you mean the section (that isn't a cinematic mind you) where they warn you it's the long way in, and they even give you an option to go in a quicker way?
Most of these are product of a time when it was made, find me a PS1 game that didnt have any one of these common as fuck issues
the rest of your points are lame negative opinions
Sebastian Young
because they expect you to talk about the game unlike all other threads about current games: wolfenstein = Sup Forums shadow of war = lootboxes mario odyssey = mostly console war
Josiah Kelly
>Explain to me Sup Forums, how is this game so universally revered? Something like 50 millions in advertisement in the 90's, never a game had been shilled like that
Aiden Collins
>weird pacing. explain
Kayden Ramirez
>the game doesn't know whether it's supposed to be funny or serious
That's funny since I've heard nothing but how the game is "too emo" for like a decade, now people are complaining about the opposite. And what the fuck is "weird pacing" and how does it not affect 99% of JRPGs in general?

Because >The story, characters and the basic gameplay and the music are really damn fine indeed. That's why the remake is gonna be fucking shit, given they're changing everything when the only thing they should be changing is the graphics.
Bentley Gonzalez
I, too, watch FF7 Abridged and saw the new episode, friend!
Robert Nguyen
This is some blatant bait but I'll bite.
>muddy, obscured graphics They were amazing at the time and the CG backgrounds, while grainy looking, are still amazing. They're simply a victim of the technology of the time.
>unintuitive controls Yeah it gets wonky at times but it's not gamebreaking, and it certainly isn't bad enough to deter millions of other people from enjoying the game.
>half-assed translation Like nearly every other FF game?
>the game doesn't know whether it's supposed to be funny or serious FF games have always had an overall serious tone with lighthearted silly bits sprinkled around. You saying this makes me believe you haven't played many or any of the other FF games like you claim.
>weird pacing You're gonna have to explain further/give some examples of this.
>TERRIBLE FUCKING minigames, some taken straight from Chrono Trigger G-Bike, Chocobo Racing and Snowboarding are plenty fine IMO. And lol @ complaining that 2 games that have carnival/arcade areas have similar games.
>FFV 5 may have arguably the best mechanics in the series with the job system but everything else in that game is mediocre.
