So it matters on one of two levels.

First, diversity as audience connection/representation. People are shallow. White people, black people, hispanics, asians, women, men, gays, trans, etc. They connect with characters more when the superficial qualities line up. So, when they want to appeal to more groups, they try to increase the diversity of the cast.

Second is, particularly in the case of games that take place in a realistic setting, is diversity as a mirror of reality. IF you're playing a game that takes place in NYC, you're likely to see and be interacting with more non-whites and LGBTQ types than if you were playing a game set in Georgia or such. The idea is that sometimes diversity in media is to represent how the world actually is.

For me, at least in terms of media, diversity is fine generally because it's a superficial quality 90% of the time. The issue lies in how approaching design with the intent of including diversity affects the creator's attitude. Lots of corporations (video games, movies, TV) will include diversity and try to lean on those laurels to sell the product, given that they believe those qualities will overcome any lack of quality in writing or design. The issue is that if you're creating something with diversity in mind, most people get lazy and think that that's a strong enough pull that they don't have to put effort where it matters

I see this all the time but I don't think I've seen a single white person on TV or in a movie or in a game ever talk shit about white people.

The most I hear is people saying not to glorify this or that person because they had flaws too, the usual flaws having to do with something racial or misogynistic or something.

It's the kind of thing that only riles people who actually glorify historical figures to above human-status

first of all people create concepts from their own perspectives. most video games are created by what you refer to as "white" people, so when the worlds they create is like it that it comes as no surprise. if people of diverse backgrounds want games that represent their culure, they should do it themselves, don't expect others to do it for you. it's even worse when other cultures try it for you and fail so hard they make a cringe version of it.
