That's my point. I still enjoy the game mostly because of Nostalgia, and the movement is fun to screw around with, but when my most used technique is a bugged one, I can't say it's a well designed game.

HIT looked like a poopy unity game. Needed way more polish. I was surprised when people said it was done and I looked at screenshots and said, "no it isn't" but idiots say it is so now they have a "finished" game that looks bad. Mario looks much better on worse hardware

haven't played odyssey but a hat in time is short and boring. it's also really buggy, in my playthrough I kept falling through platforms that were moving vertically. also alpine skyline is horrible.

I have no vested interest in either game or franchise but this Hat in Time business seems really amateur. I appreciate what they're trying to do but the design, from the gameplay to the graphics, just seems like the product of a game design class. The voice acting is great and that covers for a lot of flaws in the design but it ultimately feels like a bootleg Mario 64 with a fanfiction story.

new things tend to catch a lot of flack for.... well, just being new. whereas a familiar IP people will let shit slide even though much of it is egregious, because they've either convinced themselves it's better than it really is, or marketing has brainwashed them.

I have played both games and I have to say while Mario is obviously the more polished, grander, big budget game and looks way nicer, I find myself enjoying A Hat In Time more. The music and atmosphere of the game are great and the boss fights are a treat wheras everything in Mario feels neat but just more of the same in a way that's frankly boring. I found myself at work wishing Icould be home to play A Hat In Time but I don't feel any need to rush home and play mario. I'm at the lost kingdom so my opinion might still change but so far I'd say A Hat In Time is the better experience for me personally.

I feel the same. Mario feels very sluggish in general and his momentum slows him down massively as well. It doesn't help that half of his movements are executed with motion controls that are as accurate as a blind person doing archery.

Meanwhile hat kid controls flawlessly with button inputs and she always feels quick on her feet. You can even beat that race where you're supposed to cheat fair and square if you try.
