I like the series and I probably had more fun with it than 2, even if 2 packed better punches in regards to storytelling and obviously there was far less mechanical jank in 2. It just had the charm and wit from 1 that 2 lacked, in my opinion.

Mechanically, it's a very inoffensive game, as in, it's not so bad that you'll want to throw your controller or anything. The game is ridiculously easy so if you like the characters/story, you can get through it without a problem. It's RE4 lite with puzzle rooms where you have to defeat enemies in a certain way with your magic hacking gun, but even there you can just kill them normally and still progress, affecting only a tongue in cheek scoring system at the end of a chapter.

I dunno, the mainline Danganronpa games remind me of Ace Attorney. They're definitely not like the other generic dishwater visual novels you'd find anywhere.

It leans heavily on the events of the first game and kinda spoils 2. It'll be completely lost on you and the mechanics of the game just aren't good enough to carry it.

Yes and no. It doesn't have branching stories, it's a linear thing and while it's talking heads, it also has features you wouldn't find in a VN. The "meat" of the game are case trials, which involve trying to find the right weak spot in someone's remark and "shooting" it with the right "truth bullet" (evidence). Danganronpa basically means refuting bullets in weebspeak.
