The biggest problem, at least in my opinion, was that combat was viable at all. In the earlier games, getting caught was pretty much a guaranteed death sentence.

If you ignore the plot, characters and generally overly grimdark setting it's a really solid and fun game. The overworld is a massive pain the ass though.

it was like a poor man's dishonored instead of a thief game, and it didn't really do anything as well as dishonored did. all in all, it wasn't THAT bad. it was just bad if you went in expecting something like the originals.

Combat was entirely viable in the early games assuming you weren't a retard, you just didn't get the satisfaction of being able to slip around entirely unnoticed.
Thi4f was shit because the levels were even more linear than Deadly Shadows and there was this strange focus on Garret being some kind of "hero" when at most he supposed to be a taffer with bills to pay and a specific skill set.

It was perhaps poor wording on my part. Combat was viable in the earlier games, true. But there was quite a bit of effort involved to make that happen.
In the new game, you can get into prolonged fights with guards and come out on top, rather easily even.
