What happened to Tf2?
What happened to Tf2?
like he said, the developers are shit and people hate games with high skill caps and balance.
One of his criticisms of Overwatch is that it isn't balanced, but doesn't TF2 competitive play have a cap on demomen because teams would just stack them if given the choice?
Overwatch is shit, but I think TF2 has balance issues as well.
6v6 is fucking boring
theres your problem
>video is paced as if it's constant buildup
>climax is super smash brothers melee
>nothing afterwards
That video was ultimately disappointing and largely unfocused.
Casual mode. They had no reason to gut Quickplay, an already reasonable way to connect to Valve servers, and replace it with matchmaking lite.
>TF2 can be competitive!!!
>Just look at........... Super Smash Bros.
Tf2 is a party game and thats why its good
It also doesn't really prove his point because Smash is almost 100% community driven and Nintendo doesn't give a shit. On the rare occasions they do try something they fuck up basic shit like playing time instead of stock.
>but doesn't TF2 competitive play have a cap on demomen because teams would just stack them if given the choice?
demoman is limited because dealing with multiple sticky traps is a pain in the ass, not because he's overpowered. demo actually isn't that good compared to soldiers and scouts but he has utility that they don't.
>implying he's wrong
Yes, but they did something about it
Of course he is wrong. His video talks about how devs need to support the scene, and then uses Smash as an example when they are not involved.
He used Smash as an example of a casual party game being an esport
smash doesn't have to ban certain characters to make the game playable, unlike tf2.
Nigger you Joshing?
Esports are, have been, and always will be retarded.
metaknight is in melee?
it came onto the scene at a time where esports were basically dead, only SC was really alive
it also has an awful reputation of banning everything even thought not much shit is banned
>I'm a massive casual who plays less than
Overwatch has limited heroes too. You can only have 1-ofs. It's the same issue except that overwatch heroes have retarded ultimate moves that make their over powerement a million times more broken
This, plus the fact that the comp community was utterly toxic (existing pretty much solely to sate superiority complexes rather than enjoy more serious play), plus the fact valve officially gave up on balancing the game from the war update onwards.
Because Valve is useless.
Valve went to shit and lost focus on Competitive mode after the disaster that was MyM. Ironically enough the failure of that update was in valves inability to realize their new matchmaking was a fucking abomination that plagues the game to this day.
I find it extremely sad that Valve follows trends instead of making trends, shit like tf2 competitive and the new card game is fucking sad to watch.
Also, the devs are really out of touch, the new maps, especially mercenary park, fucking suck for the exception of maybe brazil and lazarus. The free contracts were a terrible idea because now everyone is playing pyro and fucking with the matches in pretty much every existing server, i even lost any will to buy the actual pass.
I could forgive all that if they fixed the matchmaking but it is still hot garbage and ti doesnt scramble or balance the teams, so steamrolls still happen 90% of the time. I wish they would at least add a matchmaking mode with class limits so people who want to play the game sireously without having to rely on a dead mode no one plays. It would be the sweet spot between casual and competitive.
>t. Highlander shitter
Why did he just end the video after the melee comparison? It felt like half a video.
>plus the fact that the comp community was utterly toxic
hi jeff
>What happened to Tf2?
It was fun early on
People that liked it wanted to get better
It going F2P exposed it to people that would be fine with playing it for a couple months and then dropping it, or playing it incredibly sparsely
Valve decided to pander to the aforementioned non-sustained playerbase for more money instead of the minority of players that cherished the game
Now the game is bloated with micro transactions, useless cosmetics(that aren't even made by valve anymore), awful updates, and the true fanbase is being ignored
>Why did he just end the video after the melee comparison? It felt like half a video.
Because he made all the points he wanted to and laid them out well
If you want a conclusion portion just rewatch the video for any subjects you missed
4s is superior
I won't deny that
....lol?
There's a difference between bants and shitposting in the chat and the level of bullshit I've seen in overwatch comp. People outright refuse to fucking play, blame everyone else, actively griefing, ect. It's stupid that it's become a focus for the game because it's so unfun and blizzard has 0 idea how to make a competitive game balanced and fun
It's quite an unusual phenomenon isn't it? I haven't seen quite that level of shitposting in game since I stopped playing Overwatch. What is it about that game that drives people into the frenzy? Is it because all the characters are so nice, even the bad guys?
Autistically grinding a number to get shiny badges does that to people.
They let the Nu community control it.
>tf2 launch, classic, awesome
>first hat update, looks good, hats are in line with theme of the game
>midway through hat updates, Halloween events, pyro faggot land, redditor antennaes, game pre-order bonuses - the end of the old community and the rise of the NuCommunity
/thread. the more players and the more chaotic the more fun TF2 is
It has an awful ranking system
It's the big thing blizzard is forcing, so it's full of idiots who are either slaves to whatever they think the meta is or are completely clueless
Blizzard is horrendous at balancing heroes. It's unclear how they even view most of the cast, as Jeff has said he wants heroes to be viable in as many situations as possible yet the generalist/specialist balancing has contradicted that. They have tried FOUR major rework of heroes (Symmetra, Bastion, Lucio, and Mercy), the first 2 doing basically nothing for their competitive usage, Lucio remaining the best hero as he has been FOR THE ENTIRE LIFETIME OF THE GAME, and the current mercy rework has literally destroyed any sense of balance the game has left.
Those: Blizzard constantly shoves comp down everyone's throat yet continues to balance for casual, competitive, and pros, which is literally impossible and just makes more issues
>TF2 could be a sport because Smash Bros became a sport
That’s only because Sakurai gave players the ability to alter the game to their liking, allowing for Smash Bros to be as balanced or unbalanced as possible.
Meanwhile TF2 will always be a casual quirky game. You’ll never have a serious game when characters can just randomly shoot critical damage.
aren't random crits disabled in comp?
Random crits and random spread have always been disabled in comp.
you mean pubs are fun because everybody is garbage and not actually trying
highlander is painfully boring
I dunno I stopped playing TF2 years ago. But crits are just the one of the biggest reasons I remembered not taking TF2 seriously.
Like the fact that only Sniper and Spy have to seriously aim with every other character having a fuck huge aim reticule
Of course highlander is boring you just have 2 teams taking pot shots at each other until one sniper dies
Comp has always had fixed patterns. If you don't think Scout requires aiming skill I don't know what to tell you.
Shit they even made pyro have to actually aim.
pyro actually doesn't need to aim more now than ever
6v6 autism and the constant whinery of solly and demo mains.
>play anything but the six balanced (aka broken) heros in Overwatch
>"OKAY WE JUST NEED X TO SWITCH AND WE'LL DO FINE"
>5/6 gold
>"X DIDN'T SWITCH SO THAT'S WHY WE LOST"
>like he said, the developers are shit and people hate games with high skill caps and balance.
What people do is whine.
Whining non stop online which scares the developer, then the develepor changes out of fear
Develepors are pussies, but they have their reasons, or no more money
>t. got dominated by a soldier on 2fort
That's not true, people hate games with high skill floors not caps. ex. quake
The game is designed in a way so you don't feel bad about your performance (no visible kdr etc). But as a consequence of hiding your failings, when a team is losing all the players will find ways to blame their teammates instead of themselves.
By babying their players they turned them into selfish brats in a game where teamwork is the most important skill.
Interesting, so you're saying their own "no blame" design is working against them? That makes a lot of sense thinking about the "scoreboard" you look at.
>trying to tap the melee crowd for tf2 esports
it's crazy
Mercenary Park is the ONLY map made by Valve
>The game is designed in a way so you don't feel bad about your performance (no visible kdr etc).
Actually it's the other way around. I can roughly gauge how I am doing (mostly, but I have no idea wtf my team is doing 99% of the time.
I find this very frustrating, because a lot of rounds I lose, I find myself wondering why I/we lost and unable to come up with answers. Was someone dicking around? Was a dps not doing dps? Was a healing or tank doing shit? What kind of objecitve time did the tank have?
It's all so vague, so I find myself wondering if I needed to be doing better or if my team mates were sucking shit.
valve pouring money into the esports scene wouldnt fix it (doesn't save overwatch thats for sure)
the game is too old and has a negative stimga to it
if valve cared enough to make TF2 it'd probably have a sizable scene because it would launch while esports are relevant
funke is full of shit
check'em
I hate what Valve is doing for their games aside of other issues. The competitive e-sports crowd are the fucking worst next to speedrunners, while you might increase the number of players in your game you have ensured that the matches are gonna be filled by the most obnoxious kind of players who will enforce "muh meta" like engraved in stone.
>are gonna be filled by the most obnoxious kind of players who will enforce "muh meta" like engraved in stone.
except pubs and competitive in tf2 are nothing alike.
I know right, but I just don't see the fun in a match that you know how it is gonna be, obligatory medic, demoman, scout, roamer solder and bodiguard soldier and maybe a free space for another class, chances are being a heavy or another demo. And always using the same kinds of weapons, the meta gear.
What made TF2 unike aside of the artistic direction and the writing of the characters is how chaotic and diverse a match could get, like the entire team picking Heavy in a server of 32 people because of the lolz, completly different kinds of play styles in a single class (see demoknight, fat scout, aggresive bulding engineer), or even sporadic truces because some heavies somehow decided to do a fucking picnic in a corner of the map, under a bridge or some shit.
You can never see this kind of fun in competitives, always squeezing for dem dps and following a meta of classes and gear like if it's a sacred rule in a religiously fanatic cult.
>catering to comp fags
>ever
the tf2 competitive players literally want valve to make balance changes and bug fixes to revamp the gameplay but somehow keep only soldier/demo/scout relevant. It's the most retarded double standard and until it's dropped the game will go nowhere competitively, as it's done for the past 10 years
>funke
The meta is the way it is because it's the only way to play the game at a high level that isn't AIDS. 5cp demands versatility (scout/demo/solly) because you have to constantly attack AND defend. The other gamemodes either have no good maps (ad, koth) or have fundamental problems that valve needs to address (ctf, pl, plr). Valve's weapon design is piss poor, the majority of the weapons in the game fall into four categories
>Useless gimmick
>Crutch for new players
>Blatantly overpowered
With actually balanced and interesting sidegrades being the last 1%. Look at the hot hand for instance. What does that add to pyro? Nothing. It's just a fucking meme they threw in at the last second, they couldn't even be bothered to make a new model it's just the reskinned stock glove. The game has been out for 10 years and engineer only has one other building, medic only has 3 mediguns, and heavy is still just as boring and bland as he was on release. The other issues come down to classes not being very well balanced.
This system is the foundation the game was built on and valve have done everything in their power to shit all over it. Things like the spycicle, razorback, short circuit, fists of steel, etc should not exist. Stacking classes is another issue that valve could easily fix if they bothered. Medics not being able to overheal each other and engineers not being able to repair each others buildings would help the game immensely. The game being balanced around competitive would not hurt pubs, if anything it would make them much more enjoyable.
>LoL
>Immediately apparent and obvious
What the fuck? LoL most be one of the worst spectator games if you don't play yourself.
>the tf2 competitive players literally want valve to make balance changes and bug fixes to revamp the gameplay but somehow keep only soldier/demo/scout relevant
You have no idea what you're talking about
Meta Knight was never banned, retard.
>Medics not being able to overheal each other and engineers not being able to repair each others buildings
That's a fucking horrible idea. Also no shit the hot hand's a meme weapon, it's called having fun.
I used to watch a lot of competitive TF2 back in like 2013 or so. It was a lot of fun and not at all hard to follow, even when I didn't play the game.
Games like Dota, LoL or even CS:GO at some points can definitely be more difficult to ''get'' when viewing matches.
>That's a fucking horrible idea
Really you enjoy being steamrolled by 10 overhealed heavies and soldiers or the "we got rolled lets spam engie at last" strat that happens every fucking game?
>What made TF2 unike aside of the artistic direction and the writing of the characters is how chaotic and diverse a match could get
It's almost as if the meta game was completely different and underdeveloped when the game was new and exciting, and as years went on, people found out optimal strategies.
Imagine that.
The problem I feel is more the CONSTANT changing not the fact it doesn't have support. Honestly the biggest reason I stopped playing TF2, was solely to do with the fact every weapon release or class update constantly broke the game till valve figured "welp time to get around and fix it... next week". It became such a cluster fuck I got tired of constantly putting the game down or dealing with a new class breaking thing I gave up
get gud
medic?
i agree, i just cant stand 6v6 theres absolutely none of that massive back and forth that made me fall in love with this game
9v9 could atleast get close to that
>Also no shit the hot hand's a meme weapon, it's called having fun.
I bet you think lenny faces and bison memes are comedy gold.
>Updated War Paints purchased from the Mercenary Park Gift Shop so they use all wear levels
WHAT THE FUCK VAAAAAAAAAAAAAALVE
>valve shouldvce kept catering to 20k players nstead of 90k
>bitchslapping people is the same as posting stale memes
also what the fuck are bison memes?
>He hasn't finished his contracts already
sucks to be you
The thing is though valve gets literally nothing out of doing that
In fact it will make people less likely to buy contracts because they know the rewards are likely to be complete ass
Its literally just them going out of their way to piss people off
>The thing is though valve gets literally nothing out of doing that
That's not true, more players will open cases now instead of buying paints from the store. Keys go straight to valve.
That's what I'm saying. Without a clear scoreboard that let's people see the problem they automatically blame their teammates 9 times out of 10. Because they don't want to be the problem, and the game won't tell them when they are because it doesn't want to upset its players.
The only way to get the gift shop war paints is through cases YOU CAN ONLY BUY THROUGH BLOOD MONEY ANYWAY
Delicious tf2 fans tears
Those cases still have to be opened with keys.
I don't see what your point is.
no they dont, the ones that contain the skins purchasable with blood money as well are keyless
The cases at the top have to be opened with keys and they're the only ones containing the new skins and the chance at unusuals/stranges.
ok this isn't about the new skins, this is about the skins that you could buy with blood money. Previously they were always factory new but now they have the same stupid wear system as the cases and 90% of them look like complete ass because of it, making the reward for contracts complete trash
If you're implying people won't buy contract passes then I seriously doubt it. Most players would have already bought one by now and being the only way to get the new cases that I know of whales and gambling addicts will still buy them.
its still a dick move on valves part, they get nothing out of doing it, it shits on anyone who decided not to buy everything before they completed the contracts or couldn't/didn't do the contracts until later
>its still a dick move on valves
where have you been the last 5 years
atleast in most situations valve atleast has a reason for it, even if it is just WE WANT MONEY.
>videogames
>sports
>demoman
>not overpowered
op here, when did I mention comp?
>argues tf2 is competitive with BING BING WAHOO
amazing
Crates and e-sports faggotry.
The game was fine without these.
>watching Funke
>ever
>be valve
>release good updates without ever listening to the comp community
>be Valve
>listen to comp community
>release the worst update ever
