Had promise in the past but just didn't polish their games as they should.

Abandonware now.

One of my favorite devs in the past, now they make boring games.

Can only do good stories if the lore is already developed. New Vegas is a great example.
In general, they're like Peter Molyneux except he genuinely does try to deliver and when he believes his team to be better than they really are admits fault.
Obsidian simply goes "uh... publishing forced us to release it early? Broken game engine which we couldn't fix? Oh yeah, donate more money to our kickstarter for bug fixes XD".

All in all: if they were kept on as quest writers, pretty good. Anything else? Burn them

I like them. Them and Arkane are my favourite developers.

They unironically made one of the best RPGs of all time. But now they're a shell of their former selves.

They bite off more than they can chew too often, but their ambition means even their least polished releases put Bioware or Bethesda titles to shame.

Their days of glory are long gone but we will see if they are at all relevant at least when PoE 2 realeses

A lot of people who dislike Obsidian seem to think, or at least pretend to, that Avellone was responsible for New Vegas being good.

NV is one of their best acclaimed games, you know? At lest on Sup Forums.

Look at this example: It's funny because Avellone contributed some of the most hated parts of New Vegas (Veronica, Lonesome Road).

A few years ago I would've told you that they're definitely my favorite developer and that I'd eagerly await pretty much anything with their name on it.

But after FO:NV they haven't made a single impressive or particularly interesting game. PoE was pretty good, but still well bellow their old standard.

It's a real shame, but I think it can be said that Obsidian is pretty much dead now, they survived a lot of shit and just kept making good and memorable games, but all their business and organizational problems eventually caught up with them.
