Well, ET obviously

Kingdoms of Amalur

Indie games that the devs poured their life savings in and only sold a few hundred copies. AAA games don't fail financially. They may not make as much money as the dev wanted but they're still profitable.

SWTOR? Madea profit before it even went F2P.
Mass Effect Andromeda? Financial success.
Star Wars Battlefront? Sold over 14 million copies and was insanely profitable.
And on and on and on.

shenmue

Damn shame. It was a good game. So many worse games deserved to be financial failures before KoA, but we live in a cruel and uncaring universe

Fuck everything

The demo just made it obvious that the game mechanics were all boring and that it was a cakewalk
I mean yea it's not so bad it deserved to bomb but it's not that surprising it happened considering the insane budget it had.

Someone post of pic of that woman with a station-wagon full of Wii-Us

>it made a profit, therefore it didn't fail.
Never go into business. They could have made more and done less irrevocable damage to their brand name if they just invested the money.

xbox one x

i saw this on reddits front page earlier great minds think alike eh op?

My state paid for that piss poor game to get made, what a sham.

Sega console division died after the Dreamcast, so I would think that.

Anything Atari or Sega did before their deaths. Especially the Jaguar.

I think they fucked up with FF XV, they are trying to shill their garbage mobile games to make back the marketing money

Retard.
He is no better than scalpers.

What the fuck happened to fidget spinners? In a span of a monthit went from an online meme to being sold at every gas station and grocery store in my town to completely disappearing

Saturn launch has to be up there

Only because the Saturn was such a massive fucking failure.

not the quoted guy, but
>damage to their brand
are you serious? Just look at dice and how they aint giving a fuck.

From the profile picture alone you can tell this fucker is extremely autistic.

it was a literal fad. Not how you see most people use the word but an actual honest to god fad that came and went

>what the fuck happened to [pogs]/[slinkies]/[crazy bones]/[plastic wrist bands]/[insert other fad that only children or retarded people would never know existed, leading them to ask a question as fucking stupid as yours].

>I can't read

SLINKIES ARE NOT A FAD YOU STUPID CUNT

Jokes on you, my POG collection is insured for $15k

How did that happen?

>AAA games don't fail financially
lawbreakers
battleborn

Disney giving Star Wars to EA for 10 years.

Imagine the money they could've made. Remember when there were multiple SW games coming out every year? Republic Commando, Jedi Knight, KOTOR, Pod Racer, Battlefront, Bounty Hunter, Empire at War, Rogue Squadron, etc.

Instead, we get 1 Battlefront every 2 years.

We aren't getting another Kotor or Mass Effect game for a long while if ever (ie, bad games mean they can't make money on those IP) and they had to cancel the DLC for the allegedly successful Andromeda because everyone knew it was shit.

>Crazy bones
Thats some good shit

Your state paid for a pretty good game to be made, then administrations changed and the new guy decided that shitting on the game and throwing away the money that they could have made off the deal could make himself look good.

Standard politics, this time it just happened to involve a video game.

Huh, WIIU is on there.

>You: AAA games don't fail financially. They may not make as much money as the dev wanted but they're still profitable.
>You: AAA games don't fail financially, they just fail financially.
Listen to yourself.

>We should name it the WiiU. That won't confuse people at all.

>lawbreakers

Not a AAA game

>battleborn

Okay, you got me there.

Should have called it the Wii Wii

>business fuck up
>profitable

AAA games fail financially all the time. Just because they make a shit-tonne of gross revenue doesn't mean they make returns. Dead Space 2 barely broke even after 4 million copies and 3 lost a lot of money. Same with half of Square Enix Europe's current library.

Wow that's fucking sad.

Bernie Stolar

It could be worse, I had a friend lose 70% in LINK

I'd agree with you if it wasn't EA. EA only wants blockbusters. Dead Space was profitable selling 2-3 million copies for the first 2 games. But since DS3 didn't sell at least 5 million copies, they canned the whole franchise and later the whole studio

>Investing your life savings into a fad at the tail end of its popularity
No one should feel sorry for this retard at all.

That's what you get for wanting to profit of the mentally retarted lmao

user... even if the WiiU could be considered a success (it wasn't), it is objective fact that naming it the WiiU was a mistake. To this day there are many people who don't realize that it isn't an add-on for the Wii. There were literally parents going to Gamestop and asking to buy just the Gamepad, because they already had a Wii.

There is no telling how much more successful the WiiU could have been if marketing hadn't completely dropped the ball.

>I spent 20 years and made a net profit of a dollar, therefore my time was well spent.
Business fuckups are defined by how much money they could and should have made, not how much profit was actually earned. It's clear that Nintendo dropped the ball transitioning from the Wii to the WiiU, but one could argue what they could have done differently and how much more that would have earned them.

>Lair
Killed Factor 5

>Battlefront 3
Killed Free Radical

The fuck up is the name, and the tablet. They seriously messed up there.

>lose 90% of the market share gained last generation
>successful

And don't forget that the first reveal of the WiiU didn't show a console but only the pad, leaving everyone at that presentation wondering if Nintendo announced their next generation console or only a new add-on like a Wii Motion Plus.

>the tablet
RIP THQ.
You kinda sucked but you weren't the worst.

The announcement video is horrible. Tim and Eric editing levels.

wew lad

So Europe is the most autistic?

>sweden
WEW

Is this not common knowledge by now?

Your state put most of that money in the pockets of politicians and their friends. Then you elected one of those people governor.

should had bought some crypto
im literally earning money sitting on my ass

>Okami
I'm glad they're porting it to everything. I hope more people will play my deeply flawed favourite game.

Kind of hard to not know of spinners during that time period unless you stayed in your basement as all the gas stations and small stores had "YES WE HAVE FIDGET SPINNERS!!!" or the like on signs plastered on their windows.

It was a literal fad. It was very popular, then it died.

This is what they mean when they say something is a fad and talk about oversaturation.

How old are you? Legit question?

This happens constantly with new products, from digipets, to furbies, to fidget spinners

Easy Bake Ovens did it too.

The thing with fads is that after they crash they level out abit, never really getting as popular again.

Remember this?
I struggle to do

>blonic boom still managed to sell 490k units

Why do Sonic fans like eating shit?

Because they are sonic fans.

>3 Double Fine games on there
Why do people trust Mr. Shitface ever?

Where are the fucking mods at to ban all the fags posting dick pics?

Power of a brand, son.

It's how 490 thousand units of a bad game can sell while kid Icarus uprising does not.

Also sonic had a cartoon for market synergy.

>Okami

I'm glad, fuck that game. I wasted $10 on a used copy, and I'm still disappointed.

I want to say Nintendo saying no to Sony's proposition but seeing as Sony is currently bleeding money and is barely staying afloat by the Playstation alone, that might not have been a bad choice in retrospect.

jesus

Bobby Kotick was always right about Schafer.

Lets be clear on something:

Dead Space and the SE library didn't cause a financial loss.

They just didn't meet the crazy expectations the publisher set up.

Most AAA games make a profit with 1 million copies sold. SE said that TR2013 was a flop at the beginning because "it only sold 4 million units at launch" and they had set a goal of 4.5

Look at games like SMT, the highest selling SMT game was SMTIV with 1 million copies sold, and it's a franchise with like 30 fucking titles in it.

Haze killed Free Radical

The Saturn had an incredible library in Japan.
It failed in the west because SEGA US has always been retarded as fuck, but it was pretty popular in Japan.

If we are talking numerically probably Lawbreakers. It had the worst returns with the highest losses. Although I don't know how that works with inflation.

Afew faggots point to the Dreamcast but it just didn't make enough for Sega to stay in hardware, not that it wasn't profitable.

TELEVISION GAEMS

>financial success =/= quality

Everything by Dennis Dyack post Eternal Darkness.

have you heard of this thing called budget?

SMT is cheap as fuck to make. They recycle models from the fucking 1980s and cut costs at every single turn. AAA games need to sell a lot more to break even

Reminder that EA killed dead space by forcing Visceral to go full action because it was more profitable.

Let's put it another way: the reason why EA kills studios.

These games have tight marketing and do sell alot of units for a profit but they aren't profitable enough. For the last decade studios are looking at a game's profits in respect to how much the one after it will make instead of the game in question.

Opportunity cost retard. All the money they could have made had they not given it a stupid name is money lost.

>They recycle models from the fucking 1980s

Lots of people bitch about millennials for lots of reasons, but nothing will ever bother me more than the fact that they don't understand what a "model" is.

>SWTOR
Remember that they didn't cancel the sub for people when they asked it? There's still possibly thousands whose kids stopped playing but didn't want to tell their parents so the sub is still running on their credit cards even right now. That game made hundreds of millions in profit.

You forgot tamagochi... they were a thing for a short period of time.

What did anyone actually see in this glorified Android phone?

No one ever thought he made successful games, just good ones.

>Nintendo stated they had expected to sell 100 million Wii U units

If people eat shit last time, sure they gonna eat shit again

>still replying after an hour
Yes yes I get it somehow something that made money is "The Biggest" fuck up in video game history when even shit like the virtual boy flopped way harder.
Fucking just running off that metric every company that didn't all into bitcoin is "the largest" financial flop.
