So how did their loot and leveling system turn out? I was a bit disgusted when I watched a video and they opened up that menu.

You find a bunch of trash gear in chests.
The leveling and skill point system is unnecessary, it's a skill progression system that's only in the game because people feel like they accomplish more when they level up and acquire a new skill. All the abilities that you gain really should either be introduced as plot points like the hidden blade, or be something you start out with.

Been playing for about 30 hours and I gotta say that's a depressingly bad game. That's not to say that there's no enjoyment to be found in it because it really is gorgeous but as far as being an AC game goes, it's soulless. Even as a game in general all you can do is quests which are all the same, main missions which are all the same or just wander around doing the same 2 activities ad infinitum... and one of those two activities is tacked onto the other. It's just sheer monotony and not very enjoyable.

If you must get it, do so on sale.

Turns out that the main quest line is actually very short. If not for the forced leveling, the game would be over after about 10 or so quests. Feels like that was probably the main reason for it.
