Yep, the original Witcher not only takes place 5 years after the end of the books; Geralt even died in the book. They had to resurrect him for the games.

It played into it quite well actually, as they could pass of Geralt's cluelessness about the people he'd previously met (the player not knowing anything) as a symptom of his resurrection.

It's actually even better, because Geralt meets people in the games who've been real bastards to him in the books but act all nice in the games because they know he's lost his memory and don't want to remind him he owes them a beating.
