They didn't even start until months after the announcement at E3, and even then it's just been a small team working on it until just recently. Part 1 probably wont even be half way done before KH3's release, at which point they'll throw everyone on it and rush out an incomplete game as quickly as they can.

Well the change in development team away from Cyberconnect2 probably postponed it significantly. Also they just started when they announced it.

Beyond that I bet there are too many cooks in the kitchen. However the main reason is that they decided to make it hyper-realistic, which takes a lot of effort, and to make a new action battle system (that still has to have the trappings of the original battle system, such as Materia and not just improve itself on its own terms), which has a cascading effect on everything including the level design, since you can't fight in corridors, but Midgar also needs to be cramped and derelict. The atmosphere needs to be retained, which is also hard because Barret is now going to do flips and shit in combat, breaking said immersion. Though it's possible that we're transplanted to a separate battle screen, making it easier, but Nomura would be against such a thing. It's basically that they're trying to fit VII in a mold it isn't suited for and are running into problems non-stop. Plus the pressure of re-imagining VII of all games. It makes perfect sense that it's taking forever.

Also it is a big game. However that shouldn't affect it considering it's an episodic release.

They' should've gone for a remake instead of a re-imagining. At least we'll finally get that long ago promised VII-2 with the new assets, after this shitshow is done for.

Wasn't Crisis Core supposed to be VII-2? It's a prequel, yeah, but it's definitely another full-scale release that has to do directly with the plot of VII.

People also always say that it'd be easy and quick to translate to 3d, but they aren't taking into account so many potential issues. Things like rescaling areas, adding proper transitions of areas since you aren't just transported through maps, and making sure the new stuff matches and connects visually is going to be rough. Also, due to the variety of maps were in the old game there is little room for reused assets.

No. The VII-2 is the thing promised by Genesis in Dirge of Cerberus' ending. They clearly ripped open the plot, so they could make a full fledged RPG sequel.

(Also Crisis Core is less significant than Dirge of Cerberus and Before Crisis in my opinion. Just a side story about Zack's personal small time heroics and establishing (ruining) Genesis' origin and character.)

In any case Crisis Core can only be VII-0 [actually VII-(-1)], because its scope and conclusion were limited instead of open.

Yeah, I forgot about the Dirge of Cerberus secret ending. Honestly, I think pretty much every additional thing they added to VII fucking sucked. I kind of hope the remake doesn't add in stuff like Genesis or Angeal or any of the new shit. VII was pretty much perfect on its own and I think the spinoffs went a little too "anime" when compared to the original.

Oh, they are awful and ruin the original, if you consider them meaningful canon. And besides being too anime, they are too gray, futuristic and serious. However I do enjoy them as an extra thing on the side, that I would like to see the conclusion of. They've set it up so much, that I have to say that after the many year long outrage I had, I'm kinda curious at this point about what they had in mind. The Remake though should steer clear of their content, if they have any sense.

As an aside I do have a soft spot for the third sub-canon of VII+BC+Last Order with the interview clarifying the reactor differences being "Just a faulty Turk report." because beyond that and the characterization of Cloud (His problem is the opposite of the post-AC world.) and Red XIII, BC is actually loyal to the original's characterizations, world and events. Must be because AC didn't have a chance to color them yet. VII alone is still the best.
