A large part of Ubisoft's fanbase are probably the same people who get extremely triggered by the mere mention of anything Japanese, so it may sell poorly.

Ubisoft was never going to make a medieval Japan game, it's not a mainstream enough for the west, they'd rather do ancient Greek and Rome for their next games.

Anyway thank god for that, now MAYBE we have a chance that Sucker Punch will make a game with at least decent gameplay.

The overdone part is the "ubisoft game" not the feudal Japan.
Also Sengoku is by far the shittiest era.
