The first movie captured the atmosphere as good as a video game movie could but the story was horrendous. Why was Dahlia a hobo and why did they change Harry Mason to a woman? Why was Pyramid Head there and why were the nurses sexy?

I still have no idea what the hell this ending was about.

I really didn't like the first movie when I first saw it, but after the sequel I found a newfound appreciation for it.

Like the story was still messy, Pyramid Head was just fanservice, and the pacing was odd, but it at least tried to capture the tone and style of the games. Revelations was just a bizarro slasher movie with a few Silent Hill monsters thrown in.

I honestly really liked the end of the first movie's direction. They could have just thrown in a random jump-scare at the last second but they went ahead and made it feel more in-line with the game's haunting and melancholy atmosphere.

Hell if I know why it happened story-wise, but I think it had a strong tone.

I don't know, I thought SH4's strongest point was the long/slow exploration of his apartment, silently spying on people and trying to find a way out before realizing there were none. Might be hard to give that the same impact in a non-interactive medium.

The Cell did kind of remind me of SH4, in regards to having someone exploring different layers of a serial killer's life, but it wasn't great.

Because the big twist would be laughably predictable for a modern horror film. These games just don't translate well to film. The amount of exposition and pacing don't fit well.

There was a different director for the sequel, but the same writer worked on both films. I'd place most of the blame on the latter party for the films turning out the way they did.
