From a mechanical standpoint, VNs are literally the most accessible genre of games out there. You literally need zero skill to get through most of them, so anyone can get into them. In that case, why do VNs mostly stick to anime artstyles, and harem stories, and half-assed fanservice, and all of this shit that alienates most people from the genre? Why not do something that will get more sales from the casual gaming audience; a.k.a. the ones that the mechanics of VNs service perfectly?
Why do VNs limit themselves to weebshit stories?
Because casuals play games that trick them into thinking they're smart or skilled. They want feedback loops, not interactive books.
>all of this shit that alienates most people from the genre?
Good. I don't want anti-anime retards and prudes ruining my games.
Because harem VNs just aim to get money by selling it in Japan and don't expect people from outside caring about them
Most of the people who make plot VNs are surprised when they realize their VN is popular enough outside Japan that making a translation would be a good idea
kids and normans don’t like reading
This, a VN being weeb or not doesn't change the fact that you still have to read it and most people won't do it regardless
Because only tits sell.
t. VN dev
>He can't make dosh with potato sprites
people read books for stories
people read vns for feels because it supplies more emotional attachment as they're presented from a first person protagonists angle along with art+music
Because that would take effort.
But there are some VNs that don't do this
>inb4 "those don't count because they're bad"
Is that Higurashi?
Of course it is
You HAVE read the source material of Higurashi right user?
no one besides Ryukishi07 managed to desu
even in JP the industry is fucked
your game can be as fresh as possible and still will need good art aka tiddy to succeed
I don't think I've ever played a VN. At a guess, maybe, the closest thing I've played to one is Silver Case, but even that feels more like a puzzle game than anything. With that in mind, can anyone recommend one that:
>isn't set in a high school
>no dumb magic/fantasy bullshit
>isn't a harem or romance
>isn't needlessly edgy/violent
Bonus points if it's trying to tell a more down to earth story and isn't concerned with some unfathomable spirit of the soul bullshit.
Please and thank you.
>weebshit
Is this a new Sup Forums buzzword?
VNs are just a poor man's manga.
ye, that's why I'm scared of reading stuff like Muv-Luv, House of Morgana (?) and others because I'm pretty sure that the people yelling about how they're so great are all high-powered weebs and I'm just gonna end up being angry.
The equivalent of visual novels in the west is walking simulators. Why should Japan adapt what works well for them for the sake of an audience they're not targeting?
They're Japanese choose your adventure picture books. No shit they adopt the anime art style when half the appeal is the pretty pictures and the writing is nearly never up to par for that of an actual novel. No shit they focus on harems where the audience can dictate which girl the story gravitates around. Read a real book if you want a real book.
Steins;Gate.
In order of entry level stuff that fits wnat you want
Ghost Trick
Ace Attorney
999
House in Fata Morgana is romance but more of gothic romance instead of the usual anime romance
Umineko is pretty much a deconstruction of mystery novels and most of the cast are adults
Accessibility isn't only about difficulty. In fact that's one of the least important things except for fringe examples like exclusively highly competitive games.
Also, you're stupid.
Watched the anime already, so I'm not that interested in retreading the same story sadly.
Oh, yeah, I forgot about Ace Attorney. I played most of the first one but got stuck on what I think may have been the last mission, and stopped playing it. Would Professor Layton count as it's in a similar vein? I always considered those games puzzle games with an elaborate story attached.
I've heard of 999 before, people saying they're great. I guess I could pick that one up.
It has multiple routes and the anime isn't based on any of them in particular
>What is Touhou
Potato art is passable for some
>Watched the anime already
That is unfortunate considering how much the anime cuts out. That said, if you get the gist, then Steins;Gate 0 may also sate you.
Because VNs were made pretty much exclusively by the Japanese until very recently?
Professor Layton has good atmosphere but the ending is always a really stupid twist
Try ghost try for sure, many people think it has one of the best stories in vidya
Also don't try the 999 PC version, it ruins many things so the DS version is the superior one
is 2hu VN?
no
it's a fucking game with gameplay
also 2hu HAS waifus
Book aren't for retards.
Peoples who read novels or have fun with a visual novel are smart people
Smart people are often into weebshit.
Easy.
I get that to an extent, but normally once I've gone through a story once it's incredibly unlikely I'll go back to it again. No real interest in treading the story through again.
Aren't the 999/VLR/etc games on PS4 now? Or Vita, I vaguely remember someone saying that on a thing I listened to a while back.
All the 999 ports handled some things very poorly so the DS version is the superior one, but if you absolutely can't play the DS version then the you should try whatever version you want
Irrelevant, we're talking games here
>your game can be fresh as possible and still will need good art aka tiddy to succeed
Touhou's official art is potato as fuck and is not sexualized in the least and is wildly popular.
Cool. I just checked, there is a collection for PS4 (zero escape the nonary games) so maybe I'll pick that up at some point.
I'd probably want to finish Silver Case first, I think I only got as far as finishing the second case so far?
