Title says it all, classic DMC thread Let's get a discussion going!
Have you been playing anything recently? Thoughts on where the series is? Hoping for it to come back in the future? Any lesser known games like DMC you think people should know about?
My sources indicate that DMC5 WILL be announced at PSX
Xavier Baker
Anyone? I'm beginning to feel like Dante going into hell at the end of the series
Ethan Lewis
Don't worry op, we'll be motivated when the new one is announced

You should have been here January 2013. It was the best time for DMC threads.

That's the thing, I really don't think a new one is coming soon. And if it is, I'm not sure I want one. Capcom seems to want the money that a series like this brings, but seem to not want to deal with making a series this expensive to maintain when the audience is niche 1/2
Nathaniel King
Hype gains near big game events because everyone is anticipating Itsuno's announcement, to the point where we can have multiple consecutive threads of speculation/hype/arguing. It'll be an absolute shitstorm when he reveals his next project.
Thomas Morris
Continued I'm almost certain they would fuck it up if a sequel was made, the same way they retooled a random tomb raider clone to be about dante (and thats how we got DMC2), the same way they cut DMC4s dev time and budget in half, forcing the team to rush the game and hastily wrap together what little content there was
Honestly I think the reboot was them thinking that there was no reason to work so hard making a deep combat game like DMC when that aspect of it was arguably niche (vids deconstructing the combat only get thousands of views, this stuff is nowhere as appreciated as fighting games)
They look at God of War, a more style and visuals with polished but simple combat type game, and they see a lot of easy money. So they hire a B studio out from the UK on commission with the goal to make a cheaper action game that looked pretty Then give it a radical makeover in an attempt to build a new fanbase to replace the old one that wasnt going to be attracted to the new game Then attach devil may cry as a property to it's name in order to build interest using an existing brand for attention rather than a new one And boom Recipe for disaster
Caleb Lopez
That sounds about right for DmC, but you'd think Capcom would learn their lesson after all the fan outrage. We'll just have to trust in Itsuno, and that the execs give him enough free reign to make it good.
David James
Honetly I don't want a devil may cry game now that I think about it, because Capcom isn't prepared as a publisher to allow itsuno or anyone else the creative freedom to properly make a game.
If they don't want to commit to making a game like that, then I feel like that's all that can be said
I really hope that if his game isn't DMC related the fans don't destroy him because of hype. I honestly think there's a chance it is DMC5 with how Capcom have been using classic Dante in so much other promotion
So far Marvel vs Capcom Infinite Dead Rising 4 Puzzle fighter All feature classic dante as a character or a skin
And accordin to the dmc subreddit Itsunos project probably wont be rival schools (because it would be moronic for Capcom to release a fighting game to compete with their other fighting games they are trying to sell this year)
And it may or may not be dragons dogma according to a tweet made by the musician of that game saying "they want to work with itsuno" Indicating that they are currently not collaborating on anything Which leaves DMC This is serious grasping at loose straws though so I have no idea whats gonna happen

Hmm? What do you mean by this? I thought that Dante went into hell at the end to kill Argosax or whatever
I just replayed the game for the first time since the HD collection came out though and have yet to play Lucias disk, but I remember her being alive and waiting for dante or some shit

I was thinking about using my PTO just so I can watch PSX in hope that a new DMC would get announce. But the last time I did that was for E3 2016. We all were so hype, I even pizza. And then nothing was announced.
What do bro? I don't want to miss DMC5 getting announced. My work day would feel like an eternity if that happened and I wasn't here to witness the hype.
Brody Anderson
Why people say that DMC4 happens before 2?
Hunter Thomas
Honestly it's probably worth it. Itsuno's been working long enough for an announcement, and PSX is a relatively large game event. It's also the month before Monster Hunter releases, so Capcom will want to have its next big title ready for people to look forward to.
Jesus it's scary to see how insane this fanbase has become I swear, right now, Capcom and Konami fans are the most abused of all fans And DMC fans have it the worst of all We need to start a support group or some shit Because people are idiots.
I guess because there's no events within them that solidly show one happening before or after the other. As far as I know the official status is that 2 takes place canonically after 4 Probably because they dont want to acknowledge it's existence in any way, so they try to push any and all games before it.
Jace Morales
Been really investing myself into DMC3 for the first time. Why the hell is Royal guard so much fun.
Justin Peterson
Capcom has said that 4 takes place before 2. Even the latest art book is called Devil May Cry 3142. Capcom knows 2 was shit, but I think they are too scared to officially retcon it so, they just made 4 happen before 2, so they don't have to deal with anything that happens in 2. >And DMC fans have it the worst of all Bro I am the biggest fucking DMCfag but I swear to you, we are still better off than Silent Hill fans.
>No good games since the PS2 era >Shitty HD collection >Multiple Western made sequels, ranging from mediocre to Homecoming >Book of fucking Memories >Two shitty movies made by a director who doesn't understand the games >Spooky as fuck demo released for a new title with a fucking dream team behind it, which is promptly deleted from PSN, the project cancelled, and Konami pulls out of games entirely
Julian Torres
>That's the thing, I really don't think a new one is coming soon I don't even want Itsuno's new game to be DMC5, but I assure you it will be and the fact that people are so adamant that it won't happen always surprises me. Assuming it's not going to be a new IP because that's just a Wild Card, the noteworthy games that Itsuno has directed are Dragon's Dogma, Rival Schools, Power Stone and Capcom vs. SNK. The last three are fighting games, and even though Itsuno has said he wants to do another Rival Schools, Capcom hasn't shown themselves to be putting any stock in fighting games outside of SF. MvCI was made but it was half-assed to the nth degree. I think it's safe to say it's none of these. It can't be Dragon's Dogma because if it were then Capcom would be competing with themselves with it and MHW. All that leaves is DMC, and to back it up you have the VAs of Dante, Vergil and Nero slipping up and hinting at it here and there, the series being one of the top 5 best selling Capcom series, you have DMC being sensible as the pipeline goes assuming DmC was the last mainline game in the series, and as much as people don't want to acknowledge it, that game was functionally DMC5 as far as Capcom was concerned and then you also have DMC getting attention not long ago with 4:SE. How anyone can know all this and think DMC is dead is beyond me.

I agree, Silent Hill fans easily have it way worse But no other fanbase had to deal with a reboot that insulted them from every outlet From the publisher From the devs at ninja theory From gaming media and "journalism"
Metal Gear fans have no fuckin idea how lucky they are. Their series is dead and has no hope of being redeemed, but at least they weren't being ostracised publicly by the media for being crybabies and not supporting the "brave fresh new ideas" from a franchise that "needed a breath of fresh air" and "modernisation".
I honestly still wonder why the media have had such a boner for the reboot and hated the old series so much It honestly felt at times like some serious bribes were being made by Capcom/ninja theory

I think you've just been tricked by a fake tweet. Even if you're right it wouldn't matter because Itsuno is still announcing his new game this year, PSX or not.
Nathaniel Barnes
I'm not a master but the way I've always approached DMC3 combat is learning the ins and outs of a specific weapon and style before moving on to others, then combining and branching out
I heard that the best advice for getting used to Dante style switching was to get used to using two styles (e.g. trickster and swordmaster) and work on them until you get comfortable enough stringing combos together to start doing other stuff
The first vid is especially insane This quote from one of the vids says it best "one of the few times that Dante's cutscene power is equal to or less than his gameplay demonstrated power"
Jose Foster
I think it could go either way. Regardless of the series being dead or not, there's still the issue of capcom fucking it up somehow
I truly thought that the worst was over when the reboot happened and that the franchise was just dead and no worse could be done, lo and behold, four years and one brand deal with Marvel later, and some of the ugliest models to come out of a AAA video game are produced
Robert Cox
Capcom could fuck it up, but I doubt they'll do so more than they've done with any other games Itsuno has directed. He's been making games tha are loads of fun but suffer from blatant flaws his entire career, sometimes it was on his direction, sometimes it was being pushed for time, but he's pretty consistent in making games like that and I don't imagine whatever he's working on now will be any different. What do you think he could be making if not DMC? The only reasonable one to me seems to be DD, but it's still much, much less reasonable than a new DMC.
Angel Scott
Yeah, and I can't see why he would be telling people on social media to look out for his secret project if it wasn't something special that would excite people Which has to be one of his old works that are pretty much dead For DMC to come back it would be the first rebooted work that bounced right back to original continuity as far as I am aware. The hype resulting from an announcement like that would be awesome. There is still the possibility of a new IP entirely though.
Ryan Wood
>implying DMC2 wasn't the start of it all >Dante is dead inside and stuck in a boring lifeless world >enemies are no threat and doesn't bother being stylish anymore >takes on job to stop notHeihachi Mishima >little did he know the gate to hell the antagonist was opening would send him back to the past >Dante fools Lucia with his coin flipping trickery and leaves everyone behind >kills a giant turd and a shapeshifting androgynous demon on his way out >becomes young and restarts his business >regains his will to live and prevents the world to return to shit This should also ease user's pain over Rebellion replacing Force Edge and Alastor in the third game.
Isaac Ward
I hope capcom dont fuck it up. On the one hand, all of the worst business decisions that hurt the series have already happened, and I seriously doubt they would ever repeat those mistakes, like changing the direction of the series again should they choose to continue it, and I'm sure they would make a full finished game considering the scrutiny it is gonna receive otherwise. Hell this is like DMC2 all over again, where they performed terribly and have to prove to fans that they are doing good cause all eyes are gonna be looking for flaws this time instead of blindly buying the game like we did with dmc4 in 2008. They simply have no goodwill with us.
That could mean a proper sequel matching DMC3 in terms of quality, simply because they need to earn back that faith. But that's if the game is even DMC And that's if capcom actually allow the game to be made properly like they did with 3
Honestly now that I look at this series 3 is the only one from start to finish that didn't have it's production radically altered or fucked with
Adam Rodriguez
Holy shit You've just turned years of burning disgust into shining brilliance It all makes sense now Why the game wasn't stylish or fun at all Why Dante's was so bored

Jesus christ I almost feel sorry for that guy because of the harassment he got Then I remember how he called trish a "prostitute with a big gun" as criticism of her being a flat sexualised character Before having the intro to his game be upclose shots of strippers dancing And that sex scene between mundus and lilith And I remember how we dont need hypocrites like that working in the games industry
He ruined the franchise and gave us shit, plus he insulted us all with his ''wit'' and social comments in a fucking game designed to just go crazy and do fun combos.
David Watson
I always felt that DMC2 was one of the most puzzling things to happen in the games industry. I still can't make sense of it. Usually terrible games are bad because they are unfinished or rushed (like dmc4) But dmc2 suffers from like the opposite of that It arguably has more polish and effort put into it than dmc1, with the huge environments and all the enemies and bosses designed for it It's just the design choices themselves were shit Enemies looked lame They weakened dantes moves and took his character in a new direction No taunts Large environments took away from the fun of the combat and made everything too open ended
And yet the game had amazing ideas for its music and art And the ideas added for the combat were the basis for dmc3 and 4's style system Gunslingers twosome time rainstorm Fireworks Tricksters dodge and wallruns The missile launcher that would become Kalina Ann Think about it If dmc2 was just a good sequel or an average sequel that would have been it But it being a terrible sequel is what drove itsuno to work so hard on DMC3, and that sparked the rest of this genre of crazy games like metal gear rising, bayonetta, nier automata taking off.
Consider that for a second If dmc2 wasnt so terrible, we wouldnt have cuhrayzee games or threads No DMC3, no DMC4 No Bayonetta No God hand No Metal Gear Rising No Nier automata
A game like that just shouldn't exist, but somehow it does Sometimes I wonder who the original creator of DMC2 was before being replaced by itsuno, and sometimes I wonder if they knew exactly what was gonna happen by releasing this game. It's because of DMC2 leading to 3 that I believe in a law of karma in the universe.

Evan Gonzalez
No fucking way Are you telling me Hideo Kojima secretly worked on DMC2 making it terrible on purpose as some postmodernism statement thus inspiring itsuno to make 3, kicking off this genre of stylish crazy games, as part of some long game to get platinum to work on metal gear rising
This is officially my head canon Hideo Kojima was the director of DMC2
>Just beat DMC3, had a blast >look up DMC4 >SE is PS4/XBone/PC Exclusive >PC is shit >really want to try out Lady and Trish should I just get the standard edition for now?
Brayden Ward
I know that vanilla is pretty well optimized, so I assume SE should be able to run well on your system. Even in vanilla, you're only missing out on a few characters, so it's still worth getting.
Jeremiah James
>Hideo Kojima secretly made dmc 2 awful as a masterplan to create dmc 3 Excuse me
Oliver Lewis
Not him but I heard SE is ass compared to the vanilla version in terms of optimization. But I can get vanilla to run at 60 FPS on a shitty laptop
Cooper Hill
Pirate the game and see if it works on your PC, if it runs well, buy it
Fair bit of warning, 4 is notoriously an unfinished as a game because capcom did what they do best As a result, while there are no bugs or anything (itsuno and his team wrapped everything up nicely) the game reuses it's content incredibly badly compared to the previous titles (yes, even worse than lucias campaign in 2 recycling stuff in dantes) and the story suffers because of it. The first ten or so missions are you going through the game as nero fighting a bunch of bosses in cool missions, but the next ten missions are literally all of the missions you just did with similar enemy paterns, except you play as dante, you even fight all of neros bosses This is saved somewhat by dante and nero being really fun characters to play as with tons of mechanics. If you go into it with the mindset of just enjoying the combat, you will like it. But dont expect an experience like devil may cry 3, replaying the game gets way more tedious because of the reused content, and it gets worse when you have to play the campaign twice (with a boss rush forcing you to fight the same bosses a third time).
Don't bother with the standard edition SE fixes a few thing that really sucked, like the proud soul system being much more grindy than it should be to artificially lengthen the game, which made it boring, and the new characters are worth getting the game for if you are a fan of the series (especially 3) but having to play the campaign another two times for the new characters brings into perspective how annoying the recycled content is and how unfinished that part of the game is
Pirate it and try it out, if it works well on PC buy it, if not and you are unwilling to trade in your PS3/360 for PS4/XBone, then just buy the standard edition, dante on his own is amazing if you want to play with styles (though his weapons are lacking entirely and his styles were nerfed compared to 3)
Cooper Rodriguez
Make 5 already, Crapcom. What the fuck? I have sixty bucks here that I will immediately shell out for a DMC5. I forgive you for Donte, we all make mistakes. Now make a fucking nother one.
Brody Reyes
when I say my PC sucks, I mean I have a broken fan on my GPU and it overheats for anything that isn't basic emulation

Continued, Lady and trish are pretty cool but not amazing on their own Vergil is also really cool but over powered and some people hate the embedded sword system (a mechanic from reboot vergil made its way into 4SE vergil for whatever reason) but it is still amazing work they did for him.
If you are interested, you can try and run the PC version of DMC3 with the style switcher mod
It will pretty much give you the experience of what makes DMC4 good without any of the bad (you will miss out on nero vergil trish and lady, but other than that 3 is pretty much superior as a game if you give dante style switching) That may be a good alternative if you really have a bad PC The dmc3 pc port is ass but the style switcher mod fixes that and makes the game arguably better than dmc4 Behold youtube.com/watch?v=DKxOwGUw6JU

The problem with DmC wasn't the combat, it was the setting. I can guarantee you that if Capcom made DmC with classic Devil May Cry characters and art, it would have passed as just another sequel.

Not true Then we simply would have had the same situation as devil may cry 2 devilmaycry.wikia.com/wiki/Taunt From the taunts page, under the dmc2 section "Player-controlled Taunts were taken out of because the development team felt they did not fit with the direction of Dante's new personality. The player community roundly criticized both decisions, and taunts returned in all subsequent games." Does that sound familiar?
gamespot.com/reviews/devil-may-cry-2/1900-2909902/ "What's most disheartening is that Dante (...) is almost completely devoid of any charisma. This is the same character who mocked an enormous magma spider, who had been impaled on a sword only to purge himself of it and live, and who said "let's rock, baby" and sported a pair of guns named ebony and ivory. None of these personality traits are conveyed until very late in the game, and even then they're only small windows onto Dante's former self."
The design of the game as a whole is a problem with fans, not just how the characters looked. That's a big part of why dmc2 was so criticised, it simply wanted to be a different kind of game genre wise than dmc1, and this clashed with what the fans like from the previous game. The reboot repeats the same exact mistakes, but takes it to a whole other level. I swear it feels like capcom review their worst mistakes and disasters years down the line, then think "wow bob nearly sunk this game in 2003 pffft I can top that, here, hold my beer, I'm about to fuck this whole franchise up for a decade"
Henry Harris
Thats kind of the problem The concentration meter limits your movement to encourage you to use trick more, but the really lame implementation of having trick moves tied to the embedded sword system also does that. If you have an embedded sword in an enemy and they are about to unleash an attack like berial does when you are wailing on him, vergil cant trick back like in dmc3, instead he has to land on the ground and run backwards, which looks lame, and also drains the concentration meter, which is bad design. Delusionarykiller has a great video analysis of how vergil is overpowered in some areas but underpowered in other areas in ways that both encourage and hurt creative play youtube.com/watch?v=aXi6KPMYlQs
OP here, none of the videos I added here are mine, and the two in the first post aren't even from the same channel or have the same speaker I just thought they were cool analysis vids from smaller channels talking about these games
Angel Baker
Reminds me of this comment from this great vid youtube.com/watch?v=TyUArTDYYVc *telepuertos detrĂ¡s de usted* *espada unsheathe* "Nada personales, chico"
Would you say Vergil is still fun in 4SE even with those critiques? Do you prefer 3 or 4 Vergil?
Jayden Bell
Why is Vergil so much the better brother? He's so stylish without even trying, there's no way dante could beat me
Joshua Kelly
I feel that 3 vergil is more stiff and limited in his move set but that the design is overall better, so I prefer him more All the moves and designed to work together so much better
4 vergil was really made as a way to apologise to the fans after the PR shitstorm that was the reboot, so he really is the central point of the special edition rerelease, and it feels like they threw together a bunch of moves to make him look as amazing and overpowered as possible. He kind of is an unbalanced character, which when added to how repetitive the game becomes make you want to just cheaply use his super moves more and more throughout the campaign. If it means anything 4SE was handled by a different team called access games because itsunos team was busy with dragons dogma in 2015, I have no idea if he even designed vergils moves or if they did, but if he didnt then it makes sense why vergil feels like elements of his classic gameplay and reboot gameplay were fused together, an outside team was given that task
That said, I still think he is an incredibly fun character to play with and you can certainly do amazing stuf with him in 4SE. He just has flaws that I am being incredibly critical of because attention to detail in game play mechanics is something this series is great at and should be held to that high standard (jeez how pretentious do I sound right now).
I say he is worth playing in 4. Hell, all of DMC4 for all of it's faults can be enjoyed if you focus on the tight combat rather than the unfinished state of the game. Atleast they had the good sense to make sure the combat was well crafted and perfect even if they had to sacrifice the levels and enemy varieties.
Connor Price
Is there any legit source saying that DMC4 was unfinished? I mean it certainly feels like it lacks a lot of shit but this might also be due to mismanagement of resources/dev time or anything similar.
Zachary Garcia
>Have you been playing anything recently? Bought DMC4SE on the Halloween sale, been playing it almost non-stop since, which surprises me a bit because I always had issues regarding DMC4 design. I guess after some years I was able to put up with some of the most bothersome stuff and just put my attention in the good bits of it (i.e. the combat). Been having a lot of fun in BP with Nero and Vergil. I want to learn Dante, not even on a Pro level because I don't think I've the skill nor the patience for it, I just wanna be competent enough with him. >Thoughts on where the series is? In Purgatorio of course >Hoping for it to come back in the future? Every day my man >Any lesser known games like DMC you think people should know about? Well, in style and essence Bayonetta is the closest, however that game never clicked with me because reasons. I very much like Ninja Gaiden as an action alternative and I believe is the only other action game/series that can rival DMC since Platinum is so determined to fuck their games up with some unnecessary and pointless stuff thrown in there just because.
Nathan Young
Dante's VA(who does a lot more for the series outside of voicework and is typically in close communication with the developers throughout 3 and 4s development process because of his contributions to both games) outright said Dante was shoved into 4 as a playable character and they didn't plan on him being added in for that respect.

>But dmc2 suffers from like the opposite of that >It arguably has more polish and effort put into it than dmc1, with the huge environments and all the enemies and bosses designed for it >It's just the design choices themselves were shit I heard a rumor that DMC2 was not supposed to be a DMC game, and that it began development as some other IP, but then Capcom wanted to turn that game into the DMC sequel.
It's funny really, Kamiya had no idea 2 was being made until Itsuno took over
John Scott
Thats exactly it DMC2 was originally a tomb raider clone featuring a female character and gunplay as a main combat mechanic Meanwhile at some point in development DMC1 is a smash success in japan and capcom decide to retool the tomb raider game to be a devil may cry sequel, thus explaining lucias inexplicable campaign and all of the emphasis on guns and gun based combat rather than sword attacks, and matrix like flips and jumps and submachine guns It was meant to be tomb raider capcom edition originally.
Also, food for thought: The decision for dmc2 to be made out of that game happened without the knowledge of hideki kamiya or any of the team involved on dmc1
The first he heard of it was when they were working on the english localisation for the game so it could be released in the US and EU
That's how long capcom waited before deciding to screw this franchise over. Before the first game was even fucking finished. This franchise was doomed from the start in hindsight. It's a goddam miracle itsuno managed to churn out a game as great as dmc3 with a publisher like capcom constantly trying to fuck with it. This is why I don't really want another sequel to this series. We would simply get another unfinished mess like dmc2 or dmc4 (or that reboot ughh)

I'm still upset Vorgilsaurus wasn't real.
Andrew Watson
If Vorgilsaurus, and the dimension hopping super demons powered by baby tears were true, I think DmC could have looped back into being so retarded it ends up amazing. And that's the thing is I feel like it was real, but cut due to fan backlash. The game was doomed from the start either way, so they may as well just done their own thing.

I still say the game was unfinished though. The blatant reuse of environments and bosses, you basically turn around and play the game again going backwards. I can't understand that, and I refuse to believe they stitched that stuff together as a stylistic choice thinking it was totally alright for a game.
They must have been aware of the game being unfinished and hitting a deadline, so they had to stitch that second half with the backtracking together.
People speculate that this is why the weapons dante gains are named after demonic stuff, because he was meant to go into hell for his half of the game and fight some demons to gain powers from (gilgamesh, lucifer, and pandora)
The same is used to explain kyries lack of character in the story and how generally sloppy it seems compared tot he preceding title
