Taxman's Sonic 1 & 2 greatly improve upon the originals, and the Sonic CD port is also pretty good.
Sonic 1 is "free" through Sega Forever and only like $2 to buy to remove ads between acts. Sonic CD is free if you can waste the space downloading Amazon's market, and you can also nab KOTOR for free as well that way, which supports controller & touch controls.
