He's a little cringey to be honest. DMC1 Dante was perfect. DMC2 Dante was too somber but enjoyable outside of his own game. DMC3 Dante is a bit too much but serious moments center him. DMC4 Dante is just plain wacky.

DMC3 Dante does feel like a younger, stupider DMC1 Dante. You're right in that DMC1 is best, but he can have an arc. 4 Dante is an exaggerated DMC3 but I can't hate too much since that's the last we'll see of him.

Yeah, pretty much. You can see how DMC3's Dante could turn into DMC1's Dante quite clearly but his character progression kind of gets shot through with 4. DMC1's Dante is that cold-looking dude that keeps things short and sweet but knows how to have fun. DMC4's Dante is pretty clownlike in comparison for the reasons you stated. I can see people wanting to be like DMC1's Dante for sure. Tall, handsome dude you'd see in a bar (shut up about the strawberry sundaes) or something and wonder what his story is.

Him being drunk due to killing Vergil is headcanon. Him being the strongest being ever is not. Its in the in game files. Dante surpassed Sparda when he killed Mundus and according to Kamiya, Mundus was creating universes n shit during DMC1. Its also pretty clear that Dante is far stronger than he's letting on during the game and just goofs around. He basically lets Nero do everything because he wants to know whether or not he's worthy of Yamato.

We've been over this DMC2 has that spot, has bad a game it is the character designs are excellently simple.
If Ikeno had only worked on any of the other DMCs it would probably be Dante's iconic look by now. A cameo in SMT isn't bad though, so at least the design didn't go to waste.

That wouldn't be farther from the truth, Lady, Trish and Nero all think Dante's kind of lame, while he's this dork who thinks he's hot shit.

DMC3 exemplifies this the best, he's aways doing crazy shit to look cool, but there's never anyone there to see him do it, and when there is none of them are even remotely impresed by his stunts.

Dante is legitimately one of the best game characters of all time.

Not because of his stunts or style though, she started seeing Dante differently when he saved her from being smashed to death even though she had betrayed him, and when he snapped at her, showing how he trully felt emotionally. Same thing with Lady, only when he talked to her in the library and showed her what lied beneath that persona of coolness and style that he parades all over the place that she started seeing him not as a half demon smartass, but as a person, with family problems just like her.

Donte does what he does because he (and the devs) wants to be and look cool. Dante does what he does because he wants to have fun and enjoy himself.
