To tell the story of the events leading up to the first game? It's not exactly rocket surgery.
Stories are interesting when it's a continuation. There's plenty of time to explore a world's lore in sequels. Going backwards seems like a waste of time.

So your autistic
>sequel is about the 53rd game in the series
I don't mind prequels too much as long as they're not a desperate attempt to continue milking a series that's already reached its natural conclusion. For example a witcher prequel focusing on the career of Eskel would be of no interest to me.
>game ends on cliffhanger
>sequel is a prequel
>prequel ends on cliffhanger
>studio closes
From my experience very few prequels have actually added to the lore of their series, mgs3 being my most hated example.
Movies are just as infuriating when they do this.
>Monster's Inc sequel is a fucking prequel about them meeting in college
Still one of the most baffling decisions I've ever seen. Literally no one wanted it.
>Sequel ties up loose ends from the previous game in a satisfying way
>the game is a failure and the series dies anyway
Because it's sometimes necessary.
>first few games are sequels
>after a major event, next game or two is/are prequels explaining the background of major shit that went down in previous games
>goes back to sequels now that everything is explained
Usually it's when the dev/author/whatever doesn't want to give away massive spoilers or fucktons of information that would ruin the mystery of the work in question.
What the fuck would a monsters inc sequel provide? The ending of the first movie tied up everything perfectly and it's nice to just let the characters be happy in the new world the created. Meanwhile the prequel really had no baring on the first movie at all, and really just took place earlier. This allowed them to keep the scaring theme (which you want in a movie about monsters) and have likely the best moral in any children's movie: that sometimes hard work won't beat raw talent and you need to adjust your life/goals accordingly

>dedicating 3-6 years of dev time to farther explain games you've already released.
It's such a huge time sink that'd I'd prefer they just soldier on with the story, and add flashbacks as necessary. I don't want to wait 6-8 years to see what happens next.
who fuckin asked for this
>sequel takes place both before and after the main game, creating an infinite loop
He's right though. Prequels are mostly just ways to milk a franchise.
Name 5 genuinely good prequels.
Darksiders
Prequels are retarded. We already know what’ll happen at the end and I have never played a prequel that didn’t retcon the lore.
It’s not fair!
He cares about stories in fucking videogames
