Sup Forums at its best was when the shitposting originated from here first, not the copypasted shit plucked either from other boards or even other sites. That said it's always been shitty. I've migrated to other boards and come to Sup Forums less and less but it always boggle my mind how it keeps just spamming memes taken straight from the normalfag sites.

Online gaming had strong communities
Many developers were still releasing back to back knock out titles (Capcom, Konami, id, Westwood, etc, etc, etc)
Even games for "normies" had richer story and gameplay depth
Games, while very popular, were not yet the cool/hip thing with the mainstream and could still thrive on niche audiences
Still tons of indie games to be downloaded and played and communities kept it all free.
