I think I figured out what my problem is. The uniforms don't look like uniforms. They look too different from each other. In the original game everybody was clearly in standard issue military gear, even if they decorated it with a few personal accessories like Alicia's headscarf or Rose's collar to make them recognizable. Here they might as well be wearing standard JRPG fare.

You know that "youth" goes up to 24 years right? And that since they're in the military the youngest they'd get is 18, 17 if they're pushing it.
When did I ever mention consoles? Literally the only thing I talked about ITT were the nonsensical complaints about the designs, especially when elevating the first game to some sort of pedestal. The designs for VC1 were amazing, but not because it was realistic, but because it fit the intended art direction and aesthetic of the series, something that VC4's designs have also done, and to a lesser extent 3's as well.
