Man, when I first saw the thumbnail I thought his arm was a pair of legs wearing striped leggings doing the splits and his beard was part of a one piece outfit

Games do age. Sometimes we can tolerate aged graphics and usability for a good gameplay or story. But sooner or later those also become obsolete.
Older games, let's be honest here, are not that great. Personally I would rather replay Ultima VII instead of playing Dragon's Age, but DA is objectively a better game. So it's just nostalgia or necrophilia; modern gamer would always pick DA, and that would be a correct choice.
This is bait
Games are a product of their time.
What was cutting edge or common place at the time might not mesh with the expectations a player has from modern games.
If you can't deal with that then you're a fag
saying games dont age is like saying the sun revolves around the Earth. Of fucking course it doesn't but it's simpler than saying "My perception of these dated graphics has aged poorly"
>aged graphics
Graphics are unimportant. Art design does not age.
>usability
what
>it's simpler
You just don't want to admit your less perceptive and lazier.
Expectations evolve
they don't get worse over time but they might as well
>Expectations evolve
But if the market is trending towards mass appeal wouldn't this mean expectations get worse?
>You just don't want to admit
this generally isnt something I think about when judging whether a game feels too old. Not sure what laziness has to do with anything
>this generally isnt something I think about when judging whether a game feels too old. Not sure what laziness has to do with anything
Tell me how pic related has aged.
>Art design does not age.
Just go to Webarchive and look at early 2000's design trends. Pretty dated, eh?
We're not talking about Renaissance sculptures here; games are not some classic masterpieces.
Face the reality, if not for nostalgia, you would easily admit that TDP's dated graphics and clunky animations are shit. SHIT. Also why haven't you posted the Thieves' Guild level as an example of timeless design? :^)
color scheme, barebones linework, the method of shading
all unpleasant to look at
>agreeing with sjware
>Also why haven't you posted the Thieves' Guild level as an example of timeless design? :^)
Everything in TDP looks good. The animations and graphics more than get the point across and express what they need to express. The lighting and coloring are top-tier. It's one of the most atmospheric games ever created.
Here I am, coming my way through
That pic isn't even in Zork, dude.
do you even know what zork is?
I dont know what Zork is. Not that is matters.
why don't people lurk any more
do you just not have an argument?
I remember playing this and loving it to death at 9 at school. Pulled it out 20 years later and it's still a refreshing experience.
Absolutely the best post in this thread right now.
Those 3d sections certainly have aged.
Absolutely true.
If a game plays/ looks like shit now, it also did in the past, you just lacked enough criteria/ standards to realize it before.
Good examples are old survival "horror" games that spawned from Alone in the Dark (which was nothing but a failed experiment, from its quality, although far too much of a good experiment if we judge it by how much money it did) success: RE and SH wer shit then, just like they are shit now, and you just have to play Ultima Underworld, System Shock 1, Kings Field, and specially, Alien Resurrection to realize it.
What am I arguing about? You haven't played the game.
>What am I arguing about?
that's my question too
>You haven't played the game.
No I havent, I wasnt given an image to judge and I did it. You seem to be trying to move some goalpost but frankly I dont think you had a goal to start with
Has Zork aged? There's the question.
Well then play it faggot.
myabandonware.com
You have no excuse.
judging by that image? Yeah
If that's all I have to work with, I wouldn't buy the game for how dated it looks
But Curses is a better game.
is this a shill thread?
>abandonware
I think i'll pass
You don't get to judge it by an image.
Has Zork aged?
>is this a shill thread?
>shilling for a long dead company by linking free games
>I think i'll pass
>I am in a thread about games aging but I have never played an old game
>Text-based / Spreadsheet
>games do not age
What has aged?
>You don't get to judge it by an image.
then dont present me with an image
>Has Zork aged?
a DOS textbased adventure? Yes
Played TDP first time this year, some levels are great but some are fucking frustrating and with the confusing map you can expect to lose time pointlessly wondering arroud. I can see that as a whole the game still holds up but is not the perfect game some people make it out to be.
the second fixed most of the problems for me.
And how did you determine that Zork has worse graphics than more recent text adventures?
the gameplay type. Show me the youthful wealth of textbased adventures being produced today. Surely if this isnt antiquated, there should be hundreds of them out recently
>the confusing map you can expect to lose time pointlessly wondering arroud
That is why people like it, though.
join fags discord.me/hiltlerdidnothingwrong
>than more recent text adventures?
Yes they do, go play the first hitman and the most recent one.
>Surely if this isnt antiquated, there should be hundreds of them out recently
Wrong user, only games that appeal to average people are popular. That is how the bell curve works, especially now that vidya is normalfag territory.
>the gameplay type
>antiquated
Can you tell me why it is antiquated? What specifically is antiquated?
Not him but text adventures have the same problem as old point and clicks except without the funny writing when something doesn't work.
Often it felt more like trial and error than actual problem solving.
They aren't inherently bad, but the problems they had became more apparent as the way things were designed changed.
I feel the the map in Metal age is much better implemented. you can still wonder around but without the frustration of the first.
try playing wolf 3d nowadays and tell me its good
The most recent hitman is really bad, though.
wolf 3D was never good
thats not the point here dumbass
>Can you tell me why it is antiquated? What specifically is antiquated?
ive already said its text-based
ifarchive.org
>Queer in Public: A brief essay
nice selection of 'games' you have here
>without the funny writing when something doesn't work
what
Games age just like movies do, playing a game from 80s is the equivalent of trying to watch a silent movie. The only thing that doesn't age are books.
Are these antiquated?
Compared to interactive books like house of leaves? Yes
True, but my tastes certainly evolved to the point that I can better appreciate the improvements of games over time and old games play comparably like shit.
Fucking end yourself
>Games age just like movies do
Movies do not age.
>the equivalent of trying to watch a silent movie
But user, some of those are really good. Are you sure you aren't retarded?
youtu.be
>some of those are really good
Yeah and most of them are really shit.
yes
You have no argument, and i'm STILL waiting for a counterpoint but all im getting are endless questions, SO I guess games DO age
>Yeah and most of them are really shit.
Wow, just like movies today. Guess they really don't age.
>Movies don't age
Yes they fucking do, just like games and operating systems
Take your shit taste back to Sup Forums.
Just because most media ages, it isn't devoid of all redeeming values and charm. They're not completely worthless; just mostly worthless.
>Moving the goalposts
>He's never read an older book with dry as fuck prose that just reads horribly from the perspective of modern English
>He's never read a book with themes that were massively relevant and hard hitting at the time but has since lost relevance due to the world just changing around it
Bringing up books doesn't make you look any smarter. Something being dated or antiquated doesn't mean bad, in fact those that are still talked about tend to be rather good. It just means that it can be harder to get into due factors to do with the time it was made. Not only that but books aren't even that relevant to the conversation: books weren't made out of a -- relatively -- young technology and medium that people were still working out. Go play an old commador 64 game and tell me that it honestly hasn't aged in terms of interface design at the very least.
>Go play an old commador 64
commadore 64 was never good
Moby Dick was so boring to read I couldn't finish it, like they wouldn't shut the fuck up and get to the point.
I'm not arguing for or against you. You didn't raise an argument to begin with. I don't argue with brain dead children like you. You did give me a hearty chuckle though.
>they linked their twitter in the files
This person is deeply insane.
i'll never understand this kind of blatant virtue signalling
>He's never read an older book with dry as fuck prose that just reads horribly from the perspective of modern English
>some older books are bad so all old books are bad
Let me hear of some old books that haven't aged, please I'm dying to know.
Man, you really must not read many books with that reading comprehension, huh? Try reading what I posted again but specifically look for the word "bad". You'll get there eventually.
the bible
...
it isnt and your brain is garbage
its the same shit over and over
I wasn't one of the people originally replying to you; I'm just breaking down the dilemma to a more digestible level.
Agreed. It’s why games made before 2007 will always be better than those made after.
I GOT IT
this is a Shill thread. It's nothing but baiting and link posting trying to get people interested in old shit games from the 70s. Why? Because there's a movie coming out that relies on interest in old antiquated shit games and Sup Forums is apparently the place to fish for free advertising
fuck off spielberg
