Red pill me on Super Metroid/the metroid series in general

I'm aware that many praise this game, but they never explain why. What is it that makes this game so good? I've played it for 10 minutes and all I see is a mediocre shoot-em-up.

the main draw of the metroid games is that retards like you can't understand them

Exploration, strengthening yourself by collecting power ups, going back and visiting areas that were previously inaccessible, sequence breaking by collecting items out of the intended order, awesome boss fights

It's not a shoot em up, not even close to one.

It's an exploration game that rewards skill and thinking outside the box. It's a complete and coherent game with very few flaws.

dude chill

I was just baiting. I thought I would get more responses that way.

I'm still playing it. it's obviously good.

A good ost alongside alien and interesting environments with a strong sense of exploration.

>I was just baiting. I thought I would get more responses that way.
OP please, we dont need anymore baiting around here

was this game created by the guys who made mario and zelda?

Non-linear exploration.

It's fun to soak in the world to try to find as many secrets as possible, it's god-tier to speedrun, or you can do minimalist challenge runs.
The movement options of the game are very fluid, especially when you play it with a modern controller and map the buttons to make it more comfortable.

I also like how the new areas you find accommodate to the new power ups you find, and the world is still able to test you.

Who, NINTENDO?

This, plus the whole atmosphere of the games is top notch.

They just feel really good to play and immerse yourself in.

>metroid
>shoot-em-up

No, it's a Metroidvania

yeah it really has that alien vibe to it, without being unrealistic. the high-tech stuff is also aesthetic as fuck.

it's basically scifi-porn

It's one of those muh atmosphere game, gameplay-wise it's not that good unless you are memerunning it I guess.

Crawl-em-up

But Metroid can't crawl

The main draw is, in my opinion, the exploration. Each area is fun to explore every nook and cranny of with different obstacles and aesthetics. Each power up feels rewarding to obtain, and can have drastic impacts on how you go about exploring. Super Metroid is at it's best when you get a new power up and you remember places you've been in before where you can use that powerup to progress.

>gameplay-wise it's not that good

What? Super Metroid has top tier controls, it's tight as fuck.

The GBA games are super tight too, and so do the prime games.

In fact, if you compare it to other games in genre, like Castlevania, Metroid has one of the tightest controls and gameplay.

I guess it's alright for a metroidvania, but it will never be as solid gameplay-wise as something like Contra for me. I know they are different kind of games but anyway the "exploration" aspect don't do much for me.

>super metroid
>tight as fuck
u wot? it's the floatiest game in the series

And the fastest.

You do now you can control how far you can jump and that there's a run button, right?

fastest is fusion/ZM, run button in SM is normal speed for every metroid post-super

doing shorter jumps doesn't make the physics any less floaty

>the floatiest game in the series

What do you even mean by this? I'd say it's got some initial clunkiness to it, until you get the hang of it, but floaty is definitely not a word I'd use to describe SM's gameplay. It's pretty smoth and tanky, it feels heavy while being fluid and responsive. There's a reason the game is such prime speedrun material.

boot up SM and do a full jump

>full jumps are floaty

WOW

ok now do it in any post-super metroid game. Please note I never called SM's physics bad if that's what your going to get into, it works for the game. I just challenged the claim that super is "tight as fuck"

>being that autistic

The big life changing experience with Super Metroid comes just after the moment you finally understand how to consistently wall jump.

Seriously. Do yourself the BIGGEST most amazing experience for yourself is to play and beat super metroid with no wall jamp. and then play it again after learning how. Like, holy fuck.

The moment you learn how to wall jump in SM is life changing. I wish you could just press A + the opposite direction at the same time though.

>I just challenged the claim that super is "tight as fuck"

It is though. The jumping can seem clunky at first, but once you get the hang of it it's pretty tight, yeah.
It's not floaty at all, its gameplay just has a higher skill ceiling than your average platformer.

The SM walljump has to be one of the most broken things in vidya

>I was just pretending to be retarded
How about you pretend to kill yourself next.

Watch the Universe trailer released by Nintendo on YouTube and you'll be caught up to speed.

It was a lot about the ambience and the exploring in the game. The tight controls and the music, the graphics and true sense of loneliness. The main character is cool as fuck and the upgrades and creatures were also awesome. Its creepy but beautiful at the same time.
It's a great game.

It's fun in its own right. But I do like the wall jump of Samus Returns, even if unfortunately it is almost useless.

>I've played it for 10 minutes and all I see is a mediocre shoot-em-up.
you only played 10 minutes, see, that's your problem

>all I see is a mediocre shoot-em-up.

but its not. you are incapable of getting yourself stuck ANYWHERE in super metroid. Doesn't matter the order you played the game in. If you got into a room, you can get out.

By broken I meant in an overpowered kind of broken

Wow, the game actually allows you to beat it, without resetting?

This blows my fucking mind. I wish all games did that.

Here ya go OP.

The gist of Metroid.
