What's so special about it? This feels very boring and mediocre. I don't get the hype.

I don't remember the first game very well, but Episode 1 and 2 had great, creative level design.

It's not for you, then.

why? its a story driven fps, its not like the badass shooters like halo, you know, its like your favorite games, TLoU™ and Life is Strange™

Seinfield is Unfunny effect
You needed to play this when it released to actually grasp what it accomplished

The best thing about it is the engine not the actually game

It came at a time where the whole cinematic bullshit was ushered into video games

>In-game "cutscenes" that shouldn't detract from the experience even though a big LOADING appears onscreen whenever you enter a new area

Also the gravity gun was interesting yet I feel that it was tacked on as a way of saying "Hey look we can do physics puzzles on our engine :^)"

Had a great physics engine for the time.
Gameplay and level design was completely mediocre even back then so it seems really dated now.

>playing the game to feel the hype instead of enjoying it
Of course you are not gonna see anything special. You are playing but at the same time not playing it. You are like "so when does something incredible happen" instead of "wow i like this"

>waaaa muh unkisppable cutscenes, i want pacman and tetris forever!
10 year old shitter detected

in 2004 it was amazing
GTA:SA came out in 04 and HL2 canes the fuck out of it in graphics and animation

Its old now. Alot of games copied and improved on ir now gameplaywise. And the graphics, physics and facial animations may have been awesome in 2004 but heyre meh now unless u like the austhetic.

t.cod kiddie
Episode 1 was garbage tho

the facial animations are still better than most new games, it's one of the things source does really well

>GTA:SA came out in 04 and HL2 canes the fuck out of it in graphics and animation

>Open world game made for a console is outmatched by a linear, PC-based game in terms of graphics and animations

Theyre betyer than most rpg games that have 6 billion lines to animate i can give u that. Most short onrail shooters are much better at it nowadays though.

Hell, the physics are still better than most games nowadays, it disgusts me how so many are so static

Episode 2 is better. I never replay the base game, but can go back to EP2 any day.

>both games are multiplatform

The first one is better

E2 is perfect, the thing I like the most about it is that it doesn't overstay it's welcome

Has any game capitalized on quality facial animations like Bloodlines did with the Source engine?

>Forgetting that the Xbox port of HL2 is complete shit
>Also forgetting that SA was PS2-focused first and then ported to just about every platform afterwards

It’s overrated trash with shitty shooting mechanics.

the music was great

>tfw i can never finish ep2 anymore because the ending makes me sad knowing it will never get followed up on

>there are people that played the far inferior SA ps2 version over the pc version
Ew

You needed to be there to understand why it was special in 2004, particularly in terms of narrative and writing.

The issue is that the game set the standard.

For example, messing with physics is nothing new, except for the fact that every FPS that came out for YEARS after HL2 would mention the great physics on the back of the box. What HL2 did with it was groundbreaking, and every FPS after it had to include it.

HL2 was also groundbreaking in terms of facial animation. No other game around that time could come even vaguely close to HL2's quality in that department.

Nowadays, facial animation and realistic physics is just an expectation. If a game skimps on either of those, it looks jarring and lazy. HL2 is the game that showed everyone how important those are.

It's also just fucking solid across the board. Great level design, great weapons, superb acting, everything about it is top-notch. It's nothing super incredible by today's standards, but it's a great game that blew the world away at the time.

>Basically OoT the shooter edition

it was a tech demo for the source engine. Since it's not your first game using the engine it seems bland because that's what the game is.

>He needs mods to play the game with the orange haze and have reflections on his vehicles, effects only on the fucking PS2/PS4 version

Here's your reply.

>mods
Nah, i just want to see further than 3 meters away and have better vontrols and non ps1 textures

Nutshell version:
It was very good for 2004.
Just like ocarina of time was very good for 1998.

The reason it looks bland now is because everything since has been built with it as the foundation.
