Undertale is a great game. The Pacifist Ending route is legitimately one of the happiest moments I've ever had playing a video game.
That's not the reason is the game is reviled. That's entirely because of the fanbase. If you can look past that, then there's nothing wrong with Undertale at all.

The ways in which Undertale makes appeals is naturally repulsive to many 4channians and other people with sense. It is true that its popularity has helped in this, but whether or not it caught on, it would remain repulsive.
About the only people who might enjoy it but don't entirely on the grounds of its popularity are /tg/ fags, who I am legitimately quite surprised don't jump on an opportunity to purge the world of foul xenos and mutants.

The way it makes it's appeals is in an ironic sense though. I don't think any of temmie's dialogue for example was written with any thought that it was actually endearing and cute. It was written because it's so fucking repulsive it becomes funny. I don't really see a reason why there's a problem how the game tries to appeal. It game likes to play on convention and expectation to trick the player and it's funny. I don't see why anyone here would have such a problem with it.
