Are there any adventure/single-player RPGs where being a bare-handed martial artist is a viable option? (At best equipping gloves, special gauntlets, etc.)

God Hand's combat system is well-vaunted to this day, and there was Jade Empire way back when, but nowadays bare-handed combat might as well be "tutorial" animations until you get the sword or whatever that you're actually expected to deal damage with.

Best you can get is modding something like New Vegas or Dead Island for barehanded melee to be less pathetic compared to guns and things.

One of the main characters in Battle Chasers Nightwar fights with gauntlets

Secret of mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, Sword of Mana, Legend of Mana

Monk build all day erry day niggas

Games with monk class like earlier final fantasies, bravely defualt, etc.

A good portion of the Dragon Quest games.
Some of the older FF games.

Basically classic JRPGs.

Absolver, kinda

>Draw your sword, Ramza.

Draw this, bitch.

Why aren't there more RPGs where basketball player is a viable build?

Also if you can swallow an mmo (shitty one at that) blade & soul.

In Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines you can do a pure fist build with most races, Brujah probably being the best, or a more "transform into a beast with claws" build with Gangrel.

Can't you do that in oblivion? There's also a mod for skyrim that lets you go unarmed.

Pugilist is top tier class in Etrian Odyssey 5. They deal mad damage while also shutting down foes by breaking their limbs.

Not exactly a JRPG, but in Disgaea 2 both the protagonist of the main story and the alternate mode protag (pic related) use fists.
Will watch this thread because I'm interested too.

Oh god made me remember the monk class from 7th dragon VFD.

Holy shit they did so much damage.

Morrowind. I did it when I was a kid playing it for the first time. I thought that since khajiit have claws, they do extra damage hand to hand (they don't)

First two fallouts let you play a pretty cool puncher

Usually warrior games have at least 1 character or weapon which represents punching. At the very least the dynasty and samurai ones have since they cover a lot of weapons (gauntlets), but some spin off games should too.

>not just playing a fun brawler instead of doing that shit
Why play punch fests if you're not actively doing the punching?

>Boot up your favorite flavor of modded Bethshit
>Play a burrito

>Dead Island
Riptide added a new character who specializes on fist weapons. Dead Island is crap though.

>Riptide added a new character who specializes on fist weapons
Fists and throwables

Jude from Xillia 1 & 2.

Wasn't the rapper guy already fist-oriented?

Two-handed/blunt melee with RIP'N'TEAR button

Oblivion.

Fallout 1 with Unarmed, Jinxed, and 10 luck
You run around kicking dudes in the dick while their guns explode in their faces, it's great

Dwarf fortress?

How is Dungeon Fighter Online? Do I have to interact with a lot of people or can I just punch-RPG things and do solo stuff until I scratch that itch?

I think elona has something like that

Unironically, Dark Souls 3. Just play offline if you want single player

Like half the single player rpgs? Unarmed is one of the strongest options even in series like fallout that have guns.

Just get pushy/industrial hand and Go nuts

Will Fight Knight be good?

I havent played Final Fantasy in forever but I remember that the monk's second class is way more useful barehanded.

hand, glove and gauntlet fetishists need to go and fucking die

Probably

Show me on the suit of armor where the mean monk touched you, little boy.

Literall

Senran Kagura - Kat, Daidouji and Yozu

I'm making one, but it's more like Hexen, rather than being a martial artist.

>tfw like unarmed combat, but the more unrefined, prize fighting kind instead of the fancy eastern martial arts that is present in vidya if unarmed combat is present at all

I am doubly cursed

Name?

I'm still figuring out a nice sounding name, but the working title is MusWiz.

I'm planning on adding some more assets and only then launch some kind of blog.

>Kat
Wait, don't you mean Ayame? She's Kat but with punches

Western games are your only option like boxing and wrestling games. Only nip game I can think of is yakuza who has a street style fighting.

Cute game

Guess so. I always viewed Kat as a brawler so forgot she was kick-exclusive.

Are you me? This is literally never an option in RPGs, even if there is an unarmed class. It's always some gay monk shit with Ki and other stupid mysticism things.

pillars of eternity

I mean... there is literally Tifa. Surely im not the first person to mention this?

Oblivion

people only like her for her tits, her class is irrelevant.

Pretty much as cool as she it's still disgusts alot of long term ff fans that she is the go to when Square brings up monks to cameo in

Divine Divinity 2 (older third person RPG, not the relatively new isometric RPG) has very viable monks/martial artists. Oblivion is so-so, your max damage is pretty low (11-12 IIRC) but you attack pretty fast and do fatigue damage, plus it changes the whole game into more rhythm-based combat (dart in, punch them 2-3 times and backstep before they can retaliate) unless you want to abuse paralyze and magic.

That's logical, after all she was neither the first nor the last, and her final attack isn't even all that. FF7 was a fucking blight, shit leaked everywhere and to this day people can't let go.

That is irrelevant to OP’s request though. She fights with her bare hands and feet. She is a martial artist in an RPG.

You could give barret a metal punching arm and that made him a monk.

Fantastic beat 'em up with diablo-esque looting.

One of my favorite MMORPGs ever alongside RO.

However, I'm a big beat 'em up and fighting game fan, so take that how you will.

he's already a black user.

I love the monk playstyle in WoW

Yeah, I really liked DFO because Monk wasn't really mysticism. He was also part straight boxer, which was tons of fun.

GodHand was another good one as OP mentioned.

If you want to mess with first person brawlers there's Zeno Clash, but I couldn't get into it all that much. Absolver also came out recently, dropped that as well for some reason. Borderlands has Brick I think who's active skill was a berserk fist button. Chivalry had unarmed combat which was kind of funny, but I haven't played that game in years. From what I've seen the PvP looks ridiculous now. DMC games have Ifrit/Beowulf/Gilgamesh. And finally I guess Sleeping Dogs also has some BamHam combat.

Jade Empire, obviously. I guess Fei in Xenogears fights bare-handed. Kotor 2 unarmed builds can be perfectly viable, not sure about 1.

Yakuza 0 my nigga friend.

Sleeping Dogs is sort of an RPG I guess. Great alternative to GTA.

How the FUCK did we all miss that?

Kotor 2, not only was being a barehanded martial artist viable, it had sick as fuck animations if you were fighting someone else who was barehanded

How could you do a kind of a pro fighter/street fighter/brawler kind of class?

Characters derived from the character archetype of the Shaolin monk often use ki attacks and other mystical stuff.

In Pokemon, there's the Dark type, where everything is kind of themed around desperate and dirty fighting. e.g. compared to the Fire/Fighting types, Incineroar is designed as a heel wrestler, and has signature moves involving attacking the throat and lariats.

In Etrian Odyssey 5, the pugilist has abilities around striking enemy's limbs to prevent abilities being used.

I mean, it can be as simple as most other damage-oriented classes(e.g. element punches, self-buffs, things) but how would you theme it?

Self-anesthesizing, like focusing around taking painkillers or drinking booze during a fight for self-buffs? Or self-heals that look like you're acting as your own cutman?

Thing is, a lot of games have the brawler tied in with berserker, which I never really liked. Meaning damage increases as health decreases.

But it's either than or make a dodge monk, which is cool too, but never satisfying in turn based RPGs. Beat em-ups and brawlers always did it best, where you could actually have an active fight and dodge/block/parry moves.

It's literally just a question of animation. Drop the finesse and add in heaps of brutality.

As for class features, I think some sort of damage soaking (ignore pain type of deal, maybe?) would fit the best.

Damn I've always wanted to play through riptide with some people but no one is ever actually interested. Is it really that bad?

Very interested in this man, looks nice.
