You mean 2007, right?
Because you're a retarded poorfag nigger without a proper PC to actually play modern games who probably still thinks Crysis is the apex of graphics.

Hello 16 year old Sup Forumsposter
Source was ahead of its time
Good screenshot of old gaem vs bad screenshot of new gaem: teh thread
THEN WHY DIDN'T THEY KEEP GOING
>Top
>Environment textures and reflections are all far away so flaws aren't as obvious
>Bottom
>Environment textures and reflections are all close
>Multiplayer game mode so resources are dedicated to 8?+ player networking and high framerate
What did OP mean by this?
Great looking water in this game
gaben was seduced by the steamy jew
The damage slime was terrible, though. Same repeating texture and no weight to it at all.
cause the source engine is a really good engine but its also a really shitty engine
source2 when
I get kinda annoyed Valve keeps tweaking there Steam builds of HL 1&2 with no real legacy build.
Source mostly gets better but GoldSource is definitely a step back outside of Mac and Linux support.
Half-Life 2 In my opinion aged poorly in visuals because of it's compromises for physics and facial capture.
It's water looks pretty nice but texture res overall is less than ideal and the lighting before the 2007 update was pretty weak.
I'm not shitting on it, I just think the updated build oversells it.
A lot of outlets believed Doom 3 was way more visually impressive and today that may leave people scratching their heads.
Or he just doesn't like the over emphasis of post processing effects that most modern games bank on.
It's funny how people say Crysis was the last "true" PC game in terms of graphical features but I feel the original Metro 2033 is up there and it came out 3 or 4 years later.
Isn't Source 2 already in Dota2?
where can I get some of those sweet hexagonal wheels?
You tell me senpai
I tried STALKER for the first time, call of pripyat
Holy shit it felt more like a game released at the same time as starcraft brood war
What was the name of that graphical enhancement/overhaul mod for hl2 again? Now that i've got a ryzen i might play thru it again
Half-life 2 Update
It's on Steam
Artstyle
Valves 2000's meme magic.
It was just the source engine. I'm surprised hl2: DM is alive. I gravity gunned a car into the bunker on DM_runoff
underage fags shouldn't be allowed to post here
...
Forgot to change my name from a shitpost.
because it can still look good when you cherrypick like a piece of shit
>nice scenic view for old game
>DURR STARE AT TEXTURE LOOK GAIS IT DA SAME XDXDXD
whats the gayme at the bottom cod of duty?
>potato tortue
Do we really need graphics anyway?
aged software realism is not an artstyle, you fucking wanker
Consoles
ffs, a lot more games had the so called Nintendo polish. It became "Nintendo" polish because nearly only they do it.
Are you just making up terms to sound smart?
Ghost
Why is every source game so comfy?
The baked lighting is pretty nice.
>mfw titanfall 1 and 2 run on source engine
the wonders of building something from the ground
This. I love me some baked lighting, most realistic shadows ever tqbh, every game looked so comfy/atmospheric with them
Very nice water.
the world just feels authentic, dark messiaha is so comfy
I like a man who can appreciate good water.
Epic: Teh Post
Meanwhile a top end rig from 2004/2005 wouldn't even be able to run a game from 2013+. It's like devs get kickbacks to put in hidden bullshit like tessellation just to sell hardware.
Left is Call of Duty engine
right is source engine
clarity and good performance
>the wonders of building something from the ground
source is heavily modified goldsrc engine which is a heavily modified quake engine...
i'm talking about original assets and own code
This. People who think games need a "new engine" are fucking retarded. Adding features like PBR, Tessellation and physics have been done to many engines without an engine rebrand. It's just new features, that's all "new engines" are.
Picture on the right has some subsurface scattering but the color palette is so neutral that it's appealing to the eyes. Valve is really good at picking good color template for multiplayer games.
picture on left has too much sss, and is a good reason you should never let the art team get too ahead of themselves.
It's literally already out and has been out for years
valve is just too busy with dotard 2 to do anything with it
did they ever finish dark messiah and is it worth playing? I nevr played hl1 only 2,is it any good?
>industry has done nothing but focus on visuals for a decade
>everything has somehow got worse looking from the early 2000s
you can up the resolution on fucking ps2 games and a lot of them look more pleasing than modern trash. hyper realism is fucking cancer.
>Picture on the right has some subsurface scattering
source literally has no support for sss
Left side has realistic albedo and physically based rendering. Right side is unrealistically dark for a room with direct sunlight streaming in.
LIGHTING
IS
EVERYTHING
because color theory is important and valve knew it
Mario Sunshine had better water. Two years ago. On worse hardware.
I always thought oblivion was pretty because of the color choice. Game is still sort of ugly but eh. Halo two looked really good if I remember, probably nostalgia goggles. I prefer playing old games though. Newer games seem obsessed with graphical fidelity but the world/gameplay/story or everything else usually suffers. Also some older games didn't go for realism and went for a more stylized or realized art style. Morrowinds landscape awed me when I played it when it came out. Nothing really has matched for me and betheshit made Skyrim more focused on a realistic Nordic depiction instead of the high fantasy worlds of shivering isles and morrowind.
...
you're thinking about GI, SSS is something else
just add motion blur and shinny surfaces bro.
...
...
VtM:B holds up, sorry.
Ghost wasn't the best looking FPS of that year, but it actually looks far better than that.
>realism over aesthetics
>specifically in TF2
HL2 packed not only cutting-edge tech at the time, but also great art-directing. The handcrafted models and animations, very natural feeling pre-baked lighting... it's just a gorgeous looking game, even if obviously dated around corners. I also find Source games very pleasing to look at, as there's no piles of smudgy post-processing filters on the screen at all times, and you got proper AA at your disposal to boot.
Why would you focus on making great games when you can focus on a platform that makes 10,000 times more money?
To be fair sir. The original source engine's only flaw was the lighting "flickerd" Like if you boot up SMOD which uses the old engine. it looks pretty much the same as modern source engine half life 2. EXCEPT the lighting flickers when objects move from one backed section to another. Otherwise yes it still looks practically the same.
Crisp textures
...
Can we go back to the time of high quality normal mapping and dynamic stencil shadows?
...
I feel like I've played this before, What game?
As much I'd love that, no.
Just because PBR and deferred rendering are now the coolest shit around, no matter that consoles suck ass with them.
>subsurface scattering
Nether has sss in the pic
What i think you meant is GI, global illumination, which source dosnt support ether
It has to be faked by additional light sources in shadow map bake
Left on dosnt have Gi ether as far as i know, but looking at the result i might be wrong and it might have a low res bake or voxel pass
Bringing them to a closer saturation and brightness pass in ps shows that Cod engine is far superior in application of AO and value range, the back actually feels bright as a sunny day seen from inside
Unreal 4 engine on other hand does have prebaked GI, its called light mass system or somethingm, as well as your standard shadow maps
sss, sub surface scattering is used for skin shading mostly, also for some water and ice shaders and things with medium opacity
>EXCEPT the lighting flickers when objects move from one backed section to another. Otherwise yes it still looks practically the same.
I'll be on the lookout for this next time I run SMOD. Never noticed it.
I miss the old source blood particles.
its a fantastic game, play it
daily reminder that the race for the better graphics is destroying videogames.
gameplay is the most important feature in a vidya, and if you disagreee you are a retarded nigger faggot normie who is helping destroying the industry.
if you would rather play a 10/10 graphics & 7/10 gameplay game rather than a 5/10 graphics and 9/10 gameplay, you should off yourself
>PC graphics thread
>people keep sucking the cock of old valve games and other 2000s games even though they look mediocre today
When are we going to have someone post actually impressive graphics? Is it because all of the best looking games today are either console exclusive or on console as well as PC? don't care about your clunky old ass shooters grampa
remember to ignore console posting faggots
>all of the best looking games today are either console exclusive
Did console games get working mirrors yet?
No one posts new games because as good as they may look no good games have been produced in nearly ten years. Who cares about graphics when the rest of the game is shit.
>console
>30fps
There's a ton of console games with mirros, nice joke. And before everyone keeps shitposting, I'm a PCfat that got into PC gaming in 2015 and yet All of the impressive graphics I see today are available on console as well.
Ah so you're one of those retards
The old blood particle effects were king. The ones from the Episodes are cartoony and remind me of TF2.
Source games were just the lure to get the customer base.
>look mediocre today
>TODAY
How do you people even manage to breathe
I used to mod Classic SWBF2. The buildings don't reflect. They're mirrored and the floor is translucent.
Pic related looked even more mind blowing when it came out, am I supposed to jerk it off for all of eternity?
>no good western games have been produced in nearly ten years
Fixed it for you famalam.
>Bloodborne
>Dark Souls 1, II, III
>The Witcher 3
Nice try, weeb.
>I'm in my early twenties and my taste is superior
Why are graphicsfags so elitist, arrogant, snobby, and rude? Why can't you even comprehend that people have different opinions than you?
Nobody is losing their minds about older games just commenting on the standards of the times and how plenty of games from 10 years ago still outperform modern games in certain aspects.
Why are you even in this thread you obviously only shitpost and are incapable of bringing anything to the table.
Yeah it's been over 20 years since anything good came out of the east.
>caring about graphical differences in engine updates instead of physics and gameplay ones
anywhere where i can get an original version of HL1&2?
Mostly good art direction and utilizing the simplicity of geometry that hardware at the time could handle. They also future proofed the game by giving you high resolution textures compared to the games at the time. Also the bump mapping in these games are great, I don't know why it looks so good in this game. Halo also has good bump mapping.
I'd say Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines
>not posting a comprising image with hl2 556 tactical to make 2013 cod even look more pathetic
Dr. Freeman, I'm Black Mesa
I don't know, some Source games, especially vanilla Half Life 2s, look pretty bad, really dated.
It depends heavy on the chosen Art Direction and the effort placed.
Then again, as I understand it, Source was a generally "light" engine when compared to Unreal that was the other main big boy in the Modding scene.
