By and large the greatest amount of Monster Hunter fans are on Nintendo/handheld, not playstation, not PC, not xbox. All the console Monster Hunters barely got any support or sales, that' s why they went to Nintendo and handhelds in the first place. Sony just paid well for them to come back. No console Monster Hunter game will ever do better than a handheld Monster Hunter game, even if you want to pretend it's a completely new thing. World is still a Monster Hunter game, just watered down.

Monster Hunter started out on the Playstation and sold gangbusters on PSP, as well as on 3DS. I agree with you that it wont sell as well on home consoles but the series has its fans on both Nintendo and Sony platforms.

The west is in the minority compared to the love that Japan has for Monster Hunter. If the Japanese don't love it, the game has a big chance of getting fucked. Maybe this is Capcom's way of balancing that but they should have considered their Japanese fanbase with it too.

On the left, next most preordered game after MHW, which is still #1, makes around 20% of leader's preorders. 5% is not that much of difference.
All your image shows is that japs preorder 66% less games across the board for whatever reason.
