>tfw to dumb to understand DF
It just has a really bad UI. The game itself is NOT that complicated once you know how to farm.
Oh god that update is godly.
Too bad I'm not in the mood to start a new fort.
So, in about a month or three he'll stop with the post-major-release bug-fix tweak releases, the support community will have a chance to update their utilities and the game will be playable.
thank fucking god, last time i played i was still waiting on utilities like dwarf therapist to update and they never did
This.
If the game had a more modern UI, it would be so much more accessible and they would not even have to streamline anything. Its complicated for the sake of being complicated.
Splinterz seems to have disappeared, so that was the big hold up there.
But another person has started on making it work. So, there is a version now that works with the last major release.
So now we can send our dorfs out, but is the chance of them getting killed/captured random or is it based on skill?
It's pretty cool if it's based on skill, if it's random, I don't see the point of sending skilled dorfs to their death and just send recruits after recruits.
The UI is the only thing preventing me from playing this.
Can I get a texture pack? Anyone have a recommendation?
>If the game had a more modern UI, it would be so much more accessible
But the UI is accessible for anyone with a functional brain, it is not even that complicated.
> Its complicated for the sake of being complicated.
It is not. You are just lazy as fuck and trying to justify yourself.
Skill joel was streaming last night and he sent 10 fucktards to raid elves and 7 got caught. Later he sent 6 pretty good hammer dwarves amd killed a dozen elves and got his pows back.
I thought he didn't get them back? The rescue mission is bugged and they just killed elves when he raided them.
That 10 hours was great, his dorf stuff is great
Yes, though it seems stealing artifacts unintentionally in your favor. You send any unskilled peasant off to recover a slab from a vault or necromancer tower and they'll successfully sneak in and get it every time. It's like everyone is secretly Sam Fisher.
Regular raids seem to be working properly. Unskilled militia will get their shit kicked in.
The UI is objectively clunky regardless of what semantics you're trying to use to justify it. The fact that dwarf therapist, a 3rd party software outside of the game, is pretty much an essential tool for players of any experience for streamlining the management of your dwarfs tells a lot. I don't give a shit if you're a special snowflake who doesn't use dwarf therapist and never wanted to, I have more than enough evidence from all parts of the community, newbies and veterans alike that it's an incredibly useful tool to have.
Your head is so up in your fucking ass with your showy elitism that you cannot even recognize and separate the idea of UI being bad from being a casual. UI being bad has nothing to do with being lazy or being accustomed to it. I'm fucking accustomed to it, more than most fucking players. We are all fucking accustomed to it because it's an essential part of playing the fucking game, you're not a DF god for being able to navigate through UI. This doesn't fucking mean that UI is good.
I'll wait 2-3 months for bugfixes + utilities, still it's great that Toady delivered.
This is a nice patch, but honestly, I'm waiting for that magic and myths patch to come out. If it works like he's describing it, it could be a game changer.
Fuck off, stop defending Toady's shitty UI decisions.
The whole menu system is fucking retarded.
It's layout is shit for start.
The ordering is atrocious, which proves he is hardcoding the menus order like a fucking retard.
The control systems for assigning various designations is hilariously awful. There's like 5 different incompatible systems that you can't switch between, and the one for assigning farms is the fucking worst next to assigning sleeping areas and such.
Even Toady doesn't defend his shit UI. Stop sucking his dick when even he knows it is shit.
The UI isn't a focus because Toady, self-admitted, is a tinkerer, not a programmer.
I bet you chucklefucks still defend the text UI when even Toady says that is debug and will be gone one day. (well, let's face it, never, he will die before that day comes thanks to his shit-tier diet)
stop trying to argue with UI/grafixfags
other peoples' opinions don't have any bearing on how much you enjoy the game
>toady's gpu dies
>lol why doesn't it turn on xd

I just started a game last week for the first time in years. Fuck I don't feel like starting over.
the UI is fine, it's just hotkeys
kek
News flash
If plenty of people complain a ui is tough then the ui is tough
It's not a matter of "wow this game is hard" in which the point is to overcome it, grow, and feel achievement with your work.
It's a fucking UI. A MENU.
I shouldn't have to overcome a fucking MENU as the first boss of a game. That is bullshit and inexcusable.
Shut the fuck up.
Its easy, boyo
Cry harder, child.
oh lawdy
If you can't over come the menu to play a great game with 15 years of content and depth, then fuck off and buy loot boxes cuck.
just get the noob starter pack, it comes with a bunch preinstalled
>tfw have to wait for the next Lazy Newb Pack
Call me names all you want. I ain't playing this shit without my utilities.
Once again...
Proven correct.
I only ever need dfhack these days, but started out with the LNP.
I even play with ascii, terminal mode, over lan.
Good stuff
Legends viewer is honestly amazing.
I've spent hours just looking at the history and different wars. Gonna be insane now that there are artifacts in worldgen.
How the fuck did he code a random generation of stories for Dwarves?
>Buy frozen patties
>"WAAAAH WHY DO I HAVE TO LEARN TO USE A STOVE I JUST WANT A BURGER RIGHT NOW"
Stupid Americans
holy shit btfo
Fuck off subhuman
Can't wait to put 6 hours into a fort and then find out this one feature that I really wanted is broken because I didnt wait for the coming patches after a big update.
I'm in the same boat m8. It's just too convenient.
It’s not that complicated because you have already spent a long time getting used to it and probably doesn’t even have to stop to think about how to do anything, but DF menu UI does need tome work.
To start with, managing your dwarves jobs is a chore if you do not have Therapist, which is a program by a third party. The nesting in the menus is really weird, for some reason building floors and walls is nested deeper than placing far less useful stuff like floor grates. All the deeper menus are incredibly non intuitive. To make rooms you need to target some furniture the same way you target workshops. Except if it’s a tavern, shrine or library, because then we’re talking about a completely different way to designate them.
There are plenty other games that have solved many of DFs UI pitfall in incredibly more polished ways than those menus. Most of then even account for the existence of a mouse.

there's your wall
>It is not. You are just lazy as fuck and trying to justify yourself.
the proccess of climbing a tree consists of:
Hold on to branch/log
Travel up
Realease hold on branch/log
when could be something like press shift+8 to travel up the tree when near a log/branch, it is complicated for the sake of being complicated stop being a hipster

>mfw discovering the ghost glitch years ago after making a sweet ass layout design
patch is out, no more worldgen crash
This game is terrible. This was a Kickstarter game long before Kickstarter existed. People only like it for the idea of the game - most people don't even play it due to terrible controls that have been a problem for a decade. It's cringey fanbase conflates bugs with lore, with most stories all about dated 10-year-old gameplay of drunken cats and killing giants with bunnies that would make even TVTropes cringe. The long delays between updates shows the incompetence of the developer - high-priority bugs like telling your soldiers how to dress properly could have been solved by any semi-competent developer but the dev instead chooses to add things like more dialogue options that could have been added in mere minutes by even a beginning programmer - a task which took Toady almost a decade.
It's just like Minecraft or Overgrowth or Cube World: once it leaves alpha everyone will realize how shit it truly is. Of course Toady is clever enough to make sure that day never truly comes and that he gets a steady paycheck until the end of time. You never liked Dwarf Fortress, only the idea of what it could be.
Cube World isn't in an art museum my dude.
Also nice copypasta
I just looked it up. There's like 1000 other games in that museum, as is a bunch of paintings with people wearing fedoras. The reason Cube World probably isn't included is because Wollay's updates are triannually instead of annually.
I really like the musics in the game, I wish he made more for the game.
>Defend fort with a hundred traps
>Why does my game keep crashing
>Oh yeah when traps break, they crash your game
T-thanks
I haven't played Dwarf Fortress since they were still using letters in the version numbers.
>Large world
>125 years
oh boi, here we go.
make sure you get the update that just released today so your worldgen doesn't crash
Is there going to be an update where dwarves recognize what a bedroom "should be", a kitchen "should be", a dining hall, "should be", etc. such that you can tell them to simply "BUILD: Dining Hall" and they design one using data from previously made styles? Once they get feature then the game can finally become a kingdom management simulator where you give Kingdoms of dwarves commands rather than individuals in a Kingdom commands. Also it's extremely annoying late game that you can't tell your Kingdom to automatically assign dwarves roles but rather have to micromanage every single one. The Adventure Mode Fortress Mode is nice but I'd like a full-on Spore experience where you can micro or macromanage the world on all scales (even manually create Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Plagues, Megabeasts, even proginate lesser men on a Godly level); it'd also be awesome if your dwarves could use Godly artifacts to alter the world or themselves to their whims.
Also if they didn't fix military equipment yet they should add that the head Officer or whatever berates members of the military wearing improper equipment, possible requiring a visit from the hammerer.
Oh yeah, I'm good with that. Why do I keep picking Haunted biome? A fucking tortoise corpse is bothering my dorfs
because it's the most fun user, games get boring if there's no threats
And I forgot to check for a river, my only water is a small pool of stagnant water or digging down early.
>not using legends viewer to find a vault and then embarking on it using DFhack
I actually did it when vault were introduced, it was really weird, you could pen the beasts, and the humanoids were not all hostile on sight.
The game's UI is fine, stop trying to use the mouse and learn the hotkeys. Keyboard only is always faster.
weird. On my embark everything flooded out of the vault and massacred my 7 dorfs immediately.
>Complains about DF
>Has clearly never seen Aurora 4x
This, you could also kill them by retiring and reclaiming the fort because the guardians would leave or starve by the time you take over again.
>start playing dwarf fortress for the first time
>some cave ogre walks out of the caverns and slaughters everyone, wielding a sock he picked up when he emerged
>blood everywhere
Am I doing this right?
You motherfucker
Will Df work on my toaster of a laptop?
notebookreview.com
Kek, nice. I remember my first Bronze Colossus I encountered beat 80 sieging goblins to death with a toga.
You went down to soon, that's how it goes
>get shred by wolves/undeads while setting up your fort
>lose 6 months of supplies and gears because keas
>lockdown your fort for 3 years because of a goblin/necromancer ambush
>get your shit torn apart by troglodytes while digging the first layer
>get your ass turned into an abyss by ogres on the second layer
>abandon half of your fort because of one megabeast spilling toxic blood everywhere when you opened the third layer
>make the mistake of digging to much adamantine
There you should be on the right track to despair, and fun.
If it's a toaster play on v0.34 or earlier.
You'll get low fps but it's fine, just adjust your graphics settings.
Alright thanks
It took my dorfs six months to notice the fucking dead dog on the front door.
Is it on the switch yet?
I like using Phoebe or whatever it's called. That + Dwarf Therapist makes the game a lot more enjoyable if you ask me.
The Switch could never handle Dwarf Fortress. No really, it couldn't, the game is way to unoptimized to even run properly on a last gen PC
awww yeah finally
Damnit, thinking this would be comfy as on switch. Someone should have a crack at rdoing ot from the ground up something tells me theres a lot of unnecessary code in the game
So, here's one: Has he fixed the bug where a merchant leaves the map, but the shit he's carrying remains on the inventory screen, even though it is off map when you zoom to it?
Reading dorffort stories is so comfy.
At so much fucking turkey then sat down and read all of Glazecoast.
Stick to minecraft kiddo
even if it was optimized it still wouldn't be able to handle it because switch is a piece of shit
>28yrs old
Not even mad though, minecraft was fun when it first came out but died quick, whats wrong with wanting a game you can relax into like DF? Bet your just an ass mad faggot who flings his tendies in rage as soon as someone mentions a switch
I think the only child here is you, after all you earnestly asked if DF is ever going to be on a switch which means you lack critical thinking.
Is this new? It's the first time I've seen an npc give a reason for a conflict. Also, the dark tower is run by PETA.
Not really, your pretty narrow thinking if you think that DF is the only game of its kind. Though the others do lack the depth
Every time I get back into it, I take a break when it inevitably crashes after an entire night.
I'm playing my first game of DF in a week, how much will I suffer with the UI?
Just use the quick-start guide on the wiki and read the menus and learn the hotkeys. It isn't as bad as everyone says, normalfags are just butthurt that they can't use a mouse.
Protip let the clowns out by digging straight down
I'm trying to Pelinal Whitestrake my region in adventure mode, but I keep getting my shit destroyed by night creatures.
this. dig straight down and you find a big birthday party and your dwarfs will be greeted by a lot of clowns. it's a fun easter egg.
It's a lot of fun
The UI is fine, casuals and normies just freak out that they have to learn hotkeys and that there are still games that don't use the mouse
Keyboard only controls are always faster than navigating right click menus anyway. You'll get used to it then realise how much better it is than games with shitty UIs like rimworld and prison architect.
are my trusty QoL tools updated yet?
Stop sleeping alone, queer.
