These are the best modern 4X titles, say something nice about them.

modern does not mean good.
Endless legend 2 fucking when?
4X really is dead, huh?
well they fucked up 2x Civs in a row. Heroes of Might and Magic got fucked up too.
Endless Space 2 and Stellaris are kind of unfinished/shite. Age of Wonders 3 is okay.
I really like ES2 but it needs more factions.
As it is now there's basically one for each FIDS, then a combat faction, a syphon faction, and a influence faction.
Never got into endless space because of the shitty combat. I just want a combat like in MoO2, a more balanced version of that.
legend yes
both spaces are crap (and are only tolerable when compared to utter garbage like stellaris)
Legend is so far ahead of endless space at the moment you shouldn't put them on the same list.
I'd give ES2 another year to get some expansions and patches before it hits feature complete stage.
>best
yeah no
they're both shallow as fuck with literally the only gimmick being
>muh victory conditions
if you ignore that the games are plain garbage
where the bling lords at?
Will they ever surpass Civ 4
I like EL, but it always plays out the same and the combat is total trash
Isn't Age of Wonders 3 better than both?
>shit balance
>still the best
Says everything you need to know about genre
At least it HAS tactical combat.
What competitors does it even have? Stellaris? Total War I’d youre stretching? It’s a barren genre.
where?
Ok, which are the best then.
I wish I could get good at a 4x that isn't Civ5. What's the next easiest one to build myself up wth
I want to buy Endless Legend, but I'm scared of all the DLC content.
Can I just try vanilla and buy the dlc later if I like the game, or am I missing out on much ?
Are all of the dlc packs equally worth it, or should I skip some ?
What do they add ? Do they affect multiplayer ? If it's cosmetic shit, I'll pass.
And what's the difference between "Classic" and "Emperor" edition ?
>Control every aspect of your civilization as you struggle to save your homeworld Auriga.
Does that mean Endless Legend has a sort of storyline?
Endless legends is just fantasy civ, should be a good starting point.
It's nothing special but every faction has different quest and completing the quest is one of the victory conditions. It's just flavor text.
Neat, I like some minimalist storyline in my strategic games.
The whole series does, dungeon of the endless -> EL ->ES ->ES2
You are missing out on actual expansions if you skip DLCs. Not counting the races introduced in them being quite fun to play, they add a lot of game mechanics and content.
As a bare minimum you need to pick up Tempest (massive rework of everything related to water, actually very significant gameplay improvements) and Guardians (game's equivalent of WMD and legendary buildings). Shifters is not the absolute must have since you can ignore the system introduced in it while you play, but it improves the quality of life during winters and between and that's a huge chunk of a game.
So that just leaves Shadows dlc with espionage mechanics that aren't too well implemented and are underutilized by AI, mostly down to player. And lost tales - extra quests.
Emperor's edition is just cosmetics, you get an extra race and a hero but they are pretty much the same as what game already has, just look different.
>there will never be another game with Sword of the Star's unique research tree, diverse racial FTL or detailed ship damage
EVERY DAY IS SUFFERING
>tfw your fleets get annihilated by a fucking octopus
I have the DLC, but Ion't bother with it.
>spend 20 turns making a guardian
>spend influence on spying
yeah nah, I main necrophages, I ain't got time for that shit. It's fine without the DLC unlike Civ.
Also, ES2 is dull. I couldn't get into it during the free weekend. I like that the storylines are back, but with multiple choices, but the gameplay is just dull. I'm curious, does OpBot ever show up? I remember hearing he was added in a quet to ES1 or something.
Also, Stellaris is great, fuck the haters.
Yeah, it's pretty cool. Quests are pretty common in general, especially if you're being diplomatic with the minor factions. Sometimes you get cool rewards like a free technology or hero.
Distant Worlds is, but those are good too.
too early
Endless Quest first
>tfw no RPG with Endless Legend setting
Assuming I end up buying all or some of the DLC, should I first play a few games of vanilla to ease into it? Or can I add all the new mechanics/factions right from the start without being overwhelmed ?
The game is not a rocket science but you'll have to accept that AI gets some stuff done much faster than you.
In my experience the AI seems to ignore the happiness mechanic and expands far faster.
>sots
>2
did they ever fix that game? on release they said sorry for releasing an unplayable alpha build and that if they got enough money maybe they would try to fix it within a few years
