Also, I think you missed the fact that the whole point of the story was finding out after the fact whether the rest of the squad escaped or died, and how. The last chapter was a twist that they were actually still in the city but they had all separately lost communications.

Characters like Liu Kang (generic heroman) are only ever interesting by the implications caused by their absence or deriliction of duty. No one cares if they save the day; that's a given from the start. It's more interesting to think about what would happen if they couldn't, or if they just didnt want to.

Kung Lao is 100x more interesting than Liu Kang just on the virtue of being the second best Shaolin Monk/runner-up hero.
