I actually just finished V3. These threads got me to pick up the franchise and I've been plugging away until now. So thanks to all of you for telling me to play this great franchise. Much love.
I finally got the first two games yesterday on a whim and already decided Kyoko is best girl though there's a good chance I'll get proven wrong by some bonkers shit.
I didn't get Despair Girls because everyone says it's shit, is the story worthwhile or not really?
The gameplay of Ultra Despair Girls (if you didn't know, it's a third person shooter) is so shit that I looked up all the answers to the shooting puzzles just so I would get out of the game faster.
It's a shame because the character moments that are in that game are still great (don't look up who's in it) but you have to slog through the rest to get to it. It's still worth it, I guess.
Also, you kinda need to play it to get some things in the anime, so it's a must.

As for the bonkers shit, DR3 does some dumb shit to Kyoko, but DR3 fucked up pretty much every character so it's not that bad
UDG has mediocre gameplay but everything else is pretty good

The story's not essential, but it does have some world building. Honestly though, the gameplay isn't that bad, you just have to treat it like it's a bad RE game and you'll get enjoyment out of it.
