I don't understand why everyone's toting it as far superior to Yooka-Laylee.

That's not to say AHIT was bad, but I actually found myself preferring YL in terms of structure and design. AHIT felt too level-based and objective-oriented with far too little actual exploration on display. YL on the other hand essentially gave you an open level and told you to go nuts.
The first levels were the best levels in both games, clearly, but if every level in AHIT was like the first one, the game'd be great. If every level in YL was like the first one, the game'd be GOAT.
