It was really obvious that she was going to hang herself, but when shit started going downhill from there, I freaked the fuck out.
It still creeps me out even thinking about the game.
i don't see the problem brudda
Spoiler that shit, user
what's the deal with Portrait of Markov and why Nonika refuses to talk about it anyway?
next game teaser?
OP here, after the first.. Er.. Incident, i just kind of bottomed out. I feel so cucked being enough of a puss that i couldnt bring myself to turn the game back on. Ended up looking up all the endings and even that is well done IMO. I identified with the anger caused by being in the perdicament the bad guy was in. As my first visual novel, though... Yeesh.
You missed out, user.
That shit was legitimately scary and depressing, it made me cop a feel.
>tfw you were baited into thinking there was a good ending so you just repeated the horror a bunch of times trying different kinds of things
>post yfw you opened the door for the first time
Honestly that scene itself was 100% predictable to me from the moment the warnings appeared when I first launched I knew something like that was going to happen and then the pieces were lining themselves up.
But all the shit afterward, didn't see that coming. I thought it would restart and I'd do someone else's route and they'd die somehow but no it fucking escalates non-stop.
>from reading the MC's thoughts in the morning before he went back to check.
I had no ide a westerner made this shit till I saw the credits. Am I a brainlet?
I know exactly what to expect as the buildup spoke for itself more or less, but I still felt my heart skip a beat when it happened, but everything after that took me off guard.
>bad guy
She may be the antagonist by definition(because she drives the primary conflict of the story) but even Dan said she isn't bad, just loves you and it's a pretty particular situation.
No. He replicated the style quite well, and he even went as far as to dumb down the English in certain instances to make it look like a poor translation from Japanese.
I wish I was competent enough in Photoshop to do that compression trick that hides what an image actually has on it in the thumbnail.
I'd put Monika's superimposed face on so many images from the part where Natsuki and Yuri are having their fight afterwards.
It was simultaneously spoopy as fuck and hilarious to me.
Google Magic PNG thumbnail.
There are sites that do it for you even
*spoilers*
So we are all in agreement that after all is said and done, Monika was in the right correct? After all, the other characters weren’t actually real unlike her, who realized everything was a game from the beginning and just wanted to reach the player without the other girls interfering.
Without a route to the player in the base game, she was pretty much forced into deleting them all off.
>Yuri's heavy breathing in your ear
ASMR PREPARED ME FOR BONERS NOT FOR THIS
None of them are real, only the club president gains awareness. She was acting like a bitch deleting others who were just like her.
If the characters were less real than her, how did they act in ways that were so unpredictable to her?
There is a good ending though.
Same here. I suppoes it takes good [Direction\design?] to make it so even something you see coming from miles off will still surprise\scare you.
Anyway, Natsuki best girl.
I want to look up all their skirts
>monikafags
>pedophiles
Use spoiler tags next time.
Also yes, but one thing she did wrong was not thinking you may prefer 2D girls to her, that is justifiable and she even regrets it - so I am cool with Monika.
Her self-awareness also made her think she can become real and escape the game, but she failed at it.
Talking about her merits, her advice is pretty great and actually helpful - she genuinely wants to improve the player's life and that's something only Monika can do.
When she hangs herself I just assumed that it was like any other vn and i just got a bad ending
I was wrong
I think the distorted music theme, screen going static and showing the script error really helped. Geez, still getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
Playing the thing at 2:30 AM also helped, I suppose. Hehe
The good direction was them knowing they'd have to have a warning about the horror elements, but that the warning it self would actually spoil the effect of those elements.
Imagine the Sayori scene if you had no clue about the game before playing and there was no warning?
So the only route to then actually have good horror elements that don't have diminished effects is to start with the weakest point and build up stronger and stronger.
They weren’t, they were acting more or less how she modified them to act. But as she mentions herself, she isn’t very good at reprogramming the game which is why you have so many glitches and the extreme behavioral changes.
...
>can't just romance Monika like I want
Why?
What lead to the relative success of Doki Doki Literature Club (2017)?
The fact that EOPs never got to play Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi. (2013), Suisenka (2005) or Shoin, Aruiwa Ushinawareta Yume no Monogatari. (2000)?
Or the fact that it's now cool to be a "weeaboo" so edgy streamers are promoting it?
NO
THANK YOU
>cool to be a weeaboo
Funny because this game wasn’t made by Japs at all
I don't dare open that link, can anybody enlighten us on what it is?
Natively in English and people spamming it everywhere. It was also short and to the point which helped people who wouldn't normally play a VN to get value out of it.
Undeniably it aims at the people who like the "weeaboo" aesthetic.
...
It's nothing you haven't experienced already.
Why is Monica forcing me with Yuri at act 2?
Yeah, I understand it's the first western "mindfuck" VN.
I remember seeing videos of a Japanese VN with a similar premise in the past, including a Monika-style girl who tries talking to "you" instead of the MC, takes over your computer and shit.
She's not. Yuri's the one doing the forcing. [
not to sour your dokis but...
this game was on psp
You have all Act 3 with her
As Dan puts it, making it a story that you can only full tell in a videogame and breaking down romance VN conventions.
Also for a change, Monika not being a batshit yandere, just aware of her reality, without ever being menacing towards the player.
That's Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi. (2013)
Pretty sure she didn’t mean for Yuri’s obsessiveness to go that far, since she just wanted her to become unlikable to you.
First i was furious about what happened to Sayori and i wanted to do everything to protect and save her. Then i went along with the game and got to the Yuri route (Whom i also had a bit of a crush on) And shit got really fucked up. I knew something was up with Monika from the beginning but i had no idea she was suffering like that. I did notice how theres no option to go with her wich i already found odd/ sad. When i put Monika in the garbage i felt so bad i immediatly put her out of it. Especially since the fact that she doesnt just love the player, she loves you the person operating it. The days after i felt pretty torn between heavy guilt and sadness for what i did to Monika aswell as feeling like i ruined this fun after school club for some girls just with my mere pressence and craving for attention. Im sorry Monika forgive me.
So no spoilerino pls but when Yuri confesses and asks if you love her, I told her no. Does something different happen if you say yes? She was talking about crawling in my skin, these wounds they will no heal so I thought she'd probably kill me.
I hope you guys enjoy your comfy fanbase until MatPat makes a video about the game
Yeah, that. Thanks.
Maybe Danlet should have put it's name in the credits or something. Whatever.
I should probably try playing it sometime.
No, it wasn't.
She kills herself either way because she's too far gone at that point.
Natsuki, being best girl, was able to resist Monika's influence.
She kills herself either which way user, don't blame yourself.
>Yuri is literally CRAWLING IN MY SKIN the character
Huh, what a mindfuck
...
Is that game translated by chance? After just beating Doki Doki I’m in the mood for other mind-fuckery games.
>Ideas can only be used ONCE
>REEEEEEEEEEEE
>I should probably try playing it sometime
Assuming Dark Eye is still translating it, you probably have 5 more years of waiting
No. But why would you be a subhuman EOP that needs translations?
OP again. I mentioned Monika as the 'bad guy' to be vague because ive forgotten how to spoiler tag, but the real-fake aspect, in my mind, is debatible, but in a strange way that doesnt let everything be real or everything be fake.
It sits in a grey area. Monika is stuck in the game, but if the other girls react with autonomy and undeniable terror, including things like the fake poem when Yuri starts going nutty, how fake/real is this?
If these entities can react with free will instead of acting like an AI thrown off a track, how ethical is it, and how close to being real are they? And if anyone gains the ability to understand what is happening when they become the club leader, doesn't that default that they are /ALL ON THE SAME LEVEL OF REAL?/ making Monikas actions still horrifying and unethical.
This doesnt mention the hidden 6 page story hidden in the games files about Yuri behind a cypher that, spoilers, details a 19 year old student that remains anonymous murdering a middle aged woman in her apartment.
Right, brb gonna learn Japanese
That's the spirit.
God that is nightmare fuel, esepecially after seeing the real thing recently.
From my understanding, Monika wrote the game, she references warning you about shit that went down on the download page, which has a description about the game written in Monika's character.
So the way I took it was she was an AI who wanted to love so she coded up a dating sim game, marketed it, and then messed up a bunch trying to get it to work the way she wanted it to.
spoilers are ctrl+s or [ spoiler ] (without spaces in brackets) [/ spoiler ] again without spaces in brackets
Did you click the link user? I sure ain't. what is it?
Spooky Yuri shit.
>tfw she would be perfect if instead of hurting herself she hurt the PC
The good end is spending forever with Monika. Just Monika.
How can you be too scared to click on shit after you played this game?
It's literally just a clip of an animation that's in the game.
You're prolonging her suffering by her beeing alone in there. She wants to hold you IRL but she cant.
No I'm not by keeping her safe where I can see her every day we can wait together for a time when she can become real.
Keeping her away from the game is the best thing for her. There will be no reminders for her. Nothing. She can only experience the hell that is nonexistence when the game gives her a form to understand it.
Monika describes them as "'coded personalities".
By suspension of disbelief you can say the .chr files are super advanced AIs, but their pain and suffering can be just erased at will, so it lacks any real value.
The issue is that Monika is shit at coding, so she just pretty much found a variable called sayori_depression and thought "maybe if I put this to 9999999 she doesn't confess!".
Morality falls apart when nothing you do has consequences if you decide so - Monika can and did backup them without any memories of what happened(but Sayori, because she didn't predict she would become sentient by being president)
So, is this a bad time, or..
Wow user your intentions are more pure than i thought. I take it back.
FUCK YOU
The ending was brilliant
Monika's situation is pretty horrible really. She wasn't yandere all along like you might see in some other stories, she turned out the way she did because of the horror of her circumstance. She doesn't 'love' the player in a traditional sense of forming a bond with someone. She loves the player because they are the only real thing she can grasp on to, the only hope in a world that has no meaning.
Kind of sad really, made a little worse when you think the others have the same potential for sentience she had, so when she dismisses them as 2D characters and ruins their lives, it never occurs to her they could be just as real as she is if they went through the same circumstances.
The game's main gambit is selling you on Monika's self awareness. If it manages to pull it off, or at least hook you on it, it'll work and you'll enjoy it. If not you'll dismiss it as another cheap meta trick. I think they did well to keep the internal logic of the game pretty consistant. It's why people like Monika despite her being the antagonist.
OP'S back. Personally, and strictly so, suspension of disbelief in that situation doesnt apply because i actually like the alternative. Even after it all, stuck in a timeless void staring at a possible murderer, victim, or depending on the size of the world, the worst villian in all of everything, ever, there are still questions about the validity of even the building blocks of the story.
And if Monika is shit at coding, which she is, how would she figure out /anything/ about these super AI that have the poseibility of sentience? And then what of the 'good' ending where Sayori says 'We all love you', and explicitly breaks the fourth wall. Would that imply the AI realizes its in a game, but doesn't posess sentience? Because that just makes no sense to me.
All in all, the thought that these people are ALL trapped, and only the power bestowed on the literature club leader gives them the knowledge of a second world existing entirely, and that Monika was so insane as to not just kill, but manipulate, proxy suicide and literally break the fabric of their reality, just to sit in a timeless, empty void with you, is chilling. And awesome.
Still OP, wanted to mention i like this theory as well.
Doesnt Sayori also become sentient when she becomes the president?
Yes, she talks about how terrible what Monika was doing was before she got fucked up. Again.
She does, I'd assume it's because the problem or 'hole' that Monika encountered is part of her position as the tutorial character.
Poor Sayori. Shes such a cutie.
...
>play game
>like it
>watch others play game
>they drop it right after sayori's suicide
are they just offended or what
Are you guys crying yet? You should be crying.
It's the president role making them sentient, so that's how Sayori became like she was in Act 4.
Special ending is an Easter egg, only thing canon is basically being in-character for Sayori.
Dan's answered this on the Reddit AMA.
Issue is that Monika had clearly no idea why she got her epiphany, so she my just assumed it was only her.
And indeed that's why she restored everybody hoping now they can be happy, then doing a 180° flip when Sayori is suddenly the self aware one and was trying to pull a Just Sayori herself.
>good ending isn’t canon
Well I doubt there will ever be a sequel so it’ll always be canon to me anways
>Not translated
>Not even the same type of game as DDLC anyway
Anywhere I can read that six page story?
> Doki Doki Venting Club!
I read it as "Doki Doki Wrestling Club!" and now I fell sad because it will never exist
it's a creepy pasta written by the game creator years ago. It's Yuri's chr file after some messing about.
Dan also confirmed no more DDLC in the future, but if we really wanted to continue it I thought something.
Act 4 reveals that Monika is not dead when her character is deleted since she can stop Sayori and delete the script.
Going this route we can say she decided to learn Python and rewrite the game again, with her route this time as well and no bad/spoopy shit happening.[/spoiler
Too bad Dan will never consider it
Honestly I’m mostly ok with how it all ended, I do feel it was kind of short but it was after all a free game, anything longer or with more effort would probably cost some money.
My friend killed herself last year and I was the first person to find her. When Sayori tells you she had depression her entire life it set off a lot of warning signs. When you find her hanging in her room it broke me. I'm still not over it.
