Reminder that the majority of modern Sup Forums have never played Thief 1 or 2 and probably scoff at the notion of even trying vidya that old.
that alone justifies my sense of superiority on this board
for fuck's sake the games are older than they are
What hast thou...purchased..., user? When the time comes to review thy acquisitions, with thine steam library afore thee, and the question is asked, 'What hast...thou...purchased,' what wilt thou say, poor user? For thou art a man of...piracy, not...purchasing. 'Tis the biggest sin of all. Buy thyself today a good...Game!! That would please the Builder much!
And why do you care?
Reminder that the majority of modern Sup Forums were born around or after the time that those games even came out
TIS NOTHING
I did both this summer.
They're not quite the titans that people claim, but they're good.
yes they are
Ive seen people here complaining that PS2 games are too old to be played.
Im starting to feel like im too old for this shit.
I'm sure the majority of Sup Forums at least played Thief 1 and 2, but probably just a few actually finished them and 3 (which is solid too).
Thief 1 has unbelievably massive identity crisis issues, with either shit levels or completely non-stealth busywork taking up the majority of your time.
Thief 2 did improve greatly on this, but ended with the stupidest piece of garbage level they could've possibly made for it.
Thief 1 has no identity crisis, it is a comprehensive thieving experience and that includes plundering treasure like Indiana Jones.
Thief 2 narrowed things down and that's fine if you prefer the area it honed in on but it has a serious content recycling crisis.
>playing the game blind to see if it was really that good
>it was and still holds up
>think I'm just a thief in a mundane world stealing shit and I'm perfectly okay with that
>then encounter giant spiders and zombies
>i was not prepared for this to turn into a spook game
>mfw i get to this level
>mfw no face but i must scream
I think you have a faggotry crisis, the variety is what made 1 interesting.
2 is literally the same level replayed over and over.
2 > 3 > 4 > 1
Honestly I'm not even gonna pretend to play the fucking 17 year old stealth game
>ywn never be the stable boy out back being warmed up by lady vernon but you wake up naked in a hen coop next to your helpless limp lord floundering in his own vomit
I agree and forgot about the 2 cases of recycling maps in 2, but you dudes appear to not enjoy stealth a great deal, because Thief 1 has significantly less of it and you praise it for exactly that.
>tfw you will never experience Thief Gold for the first time ever again
>stand on dark spot in the middle of a well-lit room to become invisible, then lean forward and bop incoming guards anywhere on the hitbox
>can detonate landmines and shoot exploding arrows all night and no one cares, but step on tile once and the whole map knows you're there
Some things are just bad, even if you give them leeway for being made 20 years ago.

When i first played the game i trought taffer was an actual insult and not just made it up for the game
please don't tell me i'm the only one who believe that
I enjoy stealth plenty, it's just that I also enjoy the more adventure game-style levels as well. I don't mind so much that 2 focuses more on it but the game as a whole feels a bit flat because of that, imo. Still a fantastic game overall.
HEY, I'm going to the bear pits tomorrow. You wanna come with?
>things that don't happen: the post
you can literally trail guards on ceramic tile, get good
Was Garret white?
if you are stupid enough to actually use the lethal shit then you're just a turbopleb, ghosting is the only true way
Only if you use the start-stop crouch-creep trick, which usually gives a guard enough time to turn around on his route and slice your ass.
Why not? It's fun.
Also it's 19 years old now.
My all time favourite game series
>still new FMs being churned out semi regularly
How do you feel about Sacrifice at Soulforge, though?
That's ironically the worst example of what I'm bashing Thief 1 for.
Sounds like the mechanics are working as intended to me then
Yea. That's why Thief 2 was full of women and minorities.
was referring to thief 2, idk i'll wait till the summer sale
>Inb4 normal
Is Calendra's Legacy any good? I played the Cistern for Thief 1, great FM but I dropped Legacy around first mission where everything gets spooky and the city becomes flooded with undead. Does it get better?
Were you so promptly buttblasted you started hallucinating?
I don't get the hate for Thief 3, i really enjoyed it.
Shalbridge Cradle was fucking impressive, its was a really good game. Far less shitty sequel than Deus Ex 2 was and a true sequel than fucking THIAF.
Shit, i remember playing the demo on a friend's computer back in '98 or '99.
"In the nearby rooms i will instructs you with the skills you need to survive" speech that Artemus or whatever the fuck was name was gave at the begging.
Going from Thief 1/2 to 3 is just a great change and not for the better. Even with Thief 3 Gold mod which removes loading screens and tries its best to correct all those problems its still just a lackluster sequel. Especially when compared to Thief 2.
Still fun though
One of my favourite bits about this level is how Garrett didn't draw attention to the weirdness. If that was a modern game you can bet every five seconds he would be making a quip like "DAE this is weird XD", but all he did was wait until he got the sword then said something like "time to get out of this crazy place".
>yfw you discover little big world
youtube.com
Spookiest moment early game. Didn't know what to think and then you realise constantine can grow to that size.
>the normal-sized guards patrolling that area
Must be a hell of a job
I remember a note on the massive table grieving about how the guards aren't supposed to be in his study and how they get lost and die there.
>finding that 10 foot coin inside the couch and just stealing it
Buggy movement and and detection mechanics mostly.
Also the open city aspect had potential to be good but was criminally underrealized.
well it was a compromise, Thief 3's main drawback was that it was multiplatform and had to be neutered for it to run on xbox, hence all the loading and some animation 'bugs', nevertheless i really enjoyed it. it kept the thief atmosphere and most of the team was still there.
In case some of you forgot ION Storm's next concept for Thief was set in a modern day which i think would have killed it.
Just to get back at my THIAF comment, the asylum level or hospital or whatever the fuck, was actually good. There was a moment when i looked inside a keyhole when the sound effect was done like someone just fell and was behind me, at least some stuff was well thought out even though the story was complete shit, so was nu-Garret and The City was sectioned off like garbage.
The Xbox killed Thief. TDS plays like fucking molten diarrhea compared to T1&2.
>being afraid of some initial jank
You get used to the weird made-for-3rd-person movement, the game itself is solid.
No. You literally start falling through the floor and being stuck to the floor if you jump unless you can manage to fall off of it to a platform below, which is usually not possible. It makes the game unplayable.
Garbage fucking engine.
you sometimes get stuck in the falling animation but you can fix it by saving then loading, this is with the sneaky upgrade mind you, I don't know if vanilla gets you stuck more frequently
I know in vanilla you 100% can't fix it by saving and loading, because saving in that position basically completely fucks your save file (every time you load you're still in the stuck falling position).
It's just garbage.
Getting urges to play nu-thief, is it a decent stealth game or a mediocre adventure game? (you)s please
It's total fucking shit. You literally can't jump in the game because the devs thought jumping isn't immersive and before release the devs did nothing but berate people for being nostalgiafags basically.
They replaced it with swooping which lets you fly from shadow to shadow without any chance of being spotted. Because that's immersive.
thi4f is horrible, not just "bad thief game" horrible but just a horrible game
It's ok Sup Forums will tell you it raped their mothers and killed their fathers though
Level design is linear
There's alot of load screens
Looks good
Garrett is more robin hood than cynical arsehole
It's like a 6 / 10
>Level design is linear
Oh well, thanks for the replies, might replay Prey instead, hope Arkane could make a straight up thief game one day
How's dark mod custom mission compared to thief 1 & 2 custom mission? atleast dark mod mission still got updated.
There's no way Arkane would ever make/be allowed by Bethesda to make a Thief-style game when they have the Dishonored franchise.
Dishonored is different but good, new Prey is also good. Both are far better games than Thi4f.
The highest chance of a new Thief style game would be if Otherside do it after Ultima Underworld 3 and System Shock 3, but that's not only a big if but we also have no idea if the LGS guys at Otherside still even have the talent/vision to make those two games good.
Here's your (You), cuntnugget
>Thief 2 is good
>Thief 3 is bad
me hate zambees and spookers!! hehehee thief should be abouT THIEFING not toom raider thef 1 is bad thief game
Thanks man, i was waiting for it
What is wrong with you

JOIN USS, JOIN USS
JOIN USS NOW
The ironic part of this argument is that Thief 2 has less thieving. There are only a few missions with actual loot requirement, Garrett mostly runs around and tries to save the world
is this dishonored?
1 > 3 > 2 > 4
>lost in the ruined city
>oh a masion, might have some good loot
>chains
>weird whispers
>JOINUS
>that fucking laugh when they spot you
They fill me with dread. I really can't deal with them
...
Would be true if Thief 3 was on the dark engine with non-gimped Xbox level design, too bad it's not. Thief 2's shitty levels are at least completely carried by the rock solid gameplay of its older brother.
1 > 2 > shit > 3 > being 5 meters deep in a slurry pit > 4
t. never played 3
I can't understand any guards. They have such a weird manner of speaking.
No, I definitely have played 3.
>janky controls and fucking terrible physics, can get glitched inside of the floor with ease just by jumping around
>blackjack feels unresponsive and clunky to use
>maps are tiny with 5 minute loading screens everywhere even on modern PCs because of the terrible engine
>more importantly, maps are flat and have little to no verticality to them, rope arrows are absent for the much more gamey/restrictive climbing gloves
>Garrett drowns when he touches a puddle after being an olympic swimmer in the first 2 games
>Keeper Assassins are fucking stupid and make no sense
>gameplay is completely brought down by the fact that it's designed for third-person instead of first-person
>Garrett can maintain rep with the Hammers & Pagans at the same time by doing menial oddjobs for them after stealing their precious artifacts
>crouching makes you totally silent
>Expert mode lets you kill guards
>Garrett carries a dagger because he's now an assassin-type instead of a D&D thief who raids dungeons with his sword
It's just a very poor sequel that is completely hampered by being built primarily for the Xbox for 10 year olds who want to play a sneaky assassin killer.
>using the blackjack
stopped reading there
>having less gameplay options and opportunities is somehow a good thing
Lol.
not playing the game on easy just-permanently-stun-everyone-you-see mode is a good thing, this goes for all the other thief games
In that case I guess it's a good thing Thief 4 removed jumping because being able to jump and mantle out of the line of sight of the enemy makes the game easy mode!
Brainlet.
no because jumping is a good thing, are you stupid?
thief 3 didn't even remove the blackjack so you're talking nonsense
The main difference between a blackjack run and a non one is that you´ll spend more time in a corridor waiting for the IA to finish it´s path.
You are quite delusional if you are trying to defend this.
Don´t be a kid, no one is interested in your hardcore gamer meme shit.
>Making the blackjack more clunky and unresponsive than in a game from 1998 is a good thing because it increases the difficulty!
The mark of a true brainlet, really scraping the bottom of the barrel for ways to defend how bad Thief Deadly Shadows is. I guess it makes a change from "m-muh cradle!!"
Defending what? The fact that ghosting is far more fun? You clearly never played the game properly.
I'm making fun of you for complaining about something you shouldn't even be using, not saying it's better because it's clunkier.
>"properly"
>Not using any of the tools, gear, gadgets, content and purposefully savescumming your way to victory when you alert an enemy is how the developers intended it!
Bait, I hope.
Savescumming is in the same level of blackjackscumming.
This is your mission today.
Then you clearly don't know what ghosting is.
>Spending 3 minutes per guard path just to avoid using a game mechanic is more fun because i say so
Sounds fun, yep.
Constantine´s Mansion was piss easy and interesting, Cathedral was the real boring shit.
You won't get an achievement for ghosting, you don't need to savescum if you don't want to.
>the devs put it there so it's perfectly fine to spam save!!
This is you, but replace save by blackjack.
>Can't find any way to defend Deadly Shadows except for saying that making the controls and gameplay objectively worse is either a good thing or irrelevant to the quality of the game because the developers never intended for you to use 90% of the gear and gadgets they put in it
This really is a new low for TDSfags.
My point isn't even related to the quality of thief 3, I'm just calling you a pleb.
This year was my third attempt to get into Thief Gold and I finally succeeded. Damn the game is great.
Should I look forward to The Dark Mod?
