I'm a newfag when it comes to Visual Novels as I've barely played any. They seem very daunting given how some of them can take up to 50 hours to complete. Any recommendations? I hear Narcissu is alright and Katawa Shoujo is fantastic. Are these games a good start?

Yes they're good beginner vns because they're short. Don't know what to recommend because you haven't mentioned what genres you like. Maybe if you like FE you'll like Tsukihime/Fate series. Here's a chart, it's not the most recent but the newest one is all blurry zoomed in

KS's significance comes from its connection to Sup Forums culture. It was a joke picture by a doujin artist about making a VN about cripples, from which a bunch of people on Sup Forums started discussing the idea of actually doing it, and eventually it snowballed into a full-fledged game which came out five years later. A lot of the hype came from the fact that ended up being surprisingly good, considering where it came from, so do keep that in mind if you wish to play it.

If the length of VNs are intimidating to you, Danganronpa is an excellent pick. They're not super short games by any means, but all three mainline ones (DR1, SDR2, and V3) just have this sense of energy that'll carry you through the entire thing.

Actual game dub, or Orenronen LP?

The actual game, of course. The LP was fine as a make-do back when there wasn't any actual playable translation to be found, but really, it's obsolete at this point.

The ones available on Steam off what I remember are Higurashi, Umineko, Steins;Gate, Clannad, Muv Luv, Little Busters, and Planetarian. Other ones you'll have to buy/pirate somewhere else.

What about the dozen-plus Fate Stay Night games?
