Was there ever a water level that was great? I want to know mostly from a gameplay perspective here, it doesn't cut to have "atmosphere" and be boring or just ok. And water levels are submerged playing, not beach stages with water where you may or may not swim in.
From what I played and ask others, they can be, at most, average. The general rule is that they suck. Water segments are hard to work with because they always represent a big gameplay change and are often programmed to be slowpaced. Any DEV ever landed a good execution of them?
Yes, fuck what any soyboy on Sup Forums or eTuber tells you. The Water Temple in OOT is pure kino.
Colton Martin
mayeb not great, but the water levels in kirby advanture are enjoyable.
Parker Torres
The DKTF water stages are good
Joseph Nguyen
water temple is the best water level ever made
also wet dry world
Andrew Cooper
Nioh water level is ok, the ocean roars again focus on toe-to-toe fighting and paying attention to your surroundings, It's not one of those stages I play again and again but I actually like it. I can't remind any other water level that is not extremely tedious or nonsensical.

I gotta say that pic related is breath taking tho
Mason Young
Rayman Origins have some really good water stages.
Kevin Wright
Agreed. Arguably the best (mid) dungeon/temple boss in the entire series? People say the 64 games aged horribly, but imo OOT and MM still look fucking amazing.
Jayden Flores
Spyro 2 and 3 have the best water levels known to man
Nathan Hall
Water temple 3ds is good the only issue with N64/GCN is the menu switching
Luke Williams
MGS2

The feeling this room gives can only be compared with pic related one. Those two places have something special, something other zelda games don't have.
Parker Barnes
TP has Hyrule Castle it feels like those spread out through the area
Evan Nguyen
Stress' part of the experience, I don't think I'll ever complete the dungeon if I weren't so fucking autistic looking for a fucking key under the fucking platform what the fuck Nintendo who's idea was that you cheeky cunts
Jose Jenkins
I actually kind of like that level (granted I fucking love water as a theme so I'm biased.) It's not great or anything but I don't see why people hate it so much. Sort of the same feelings towards the game in general, except I think the rest of the game actually is pretty great.
World of Illusion has a fantastic water level. The DKC games also have really solid water levels and that's coming from someone who's not that into the series as a whole.
The Ancient Cistern is possibly the only part of Skyward Sword I actually liked besides maybe parts of the desert, and that was largely a water level.
My biggest issue with the OoT Water Temple isn't that it's bullshit or anything, I just find it really boring and repetitive. There are cool things about it, though.
Most 3D Mario games have pretty solid water levels, too. I can't think of any examples of ones I didn't like. The 2D Mario games have... hit or miss water stages, though.
Spyro 2&3 like said are fantastic.
I also really like the water levels in Banjo-Kazooie... though I fully understand why somebody wouldn't.

Absolute pleb. Everyone knows the patrician area in MM is Astal observatory >dat music >dem chickens clucking >dem rainbow stairs
Brody King
Was screenshot taken from an emulator? How is it widescreen like that?

>what is Hydrocity Zone
Evan Perez
Origins and Legends have fantastic water levels that, imo, are often better than the ground stages
Carter Adams
No sir, you have the bad taste. Patrician area is the sewer just before the Astral Observatory, or in the house in Romani Ranch while Cremia and Romani are in there.
Joshua James
Hydrocity from Sonic 3 is the best water level
Connor Martinez
They are completely different situations, you've talked to the bombers, you know you are going to visit the guy in the observatory, once you get there you experience the music and whatnot BUT. In you are on the middle of a dungeon, wrapping your head around the water levels and shit and then you open the door and... bam, a vast and calm nothingness (Back then that room felt fucking huge and endless) and in the middle a fucking tree. With you expect the insides of the moon, something apocaliptical or fucked up but... no, a vast meadow with a little hill and a giant tree in the middle whilst at sunshine. Observatory is good but if you compare them the way you did you are just talking by taste and not sticking to the point at all. Congrats buddy, you used a buzzword taken out of your ass.
fucking pleb
Lincoln Clark
Nope, it's from the internet, I've always played n64 and cube on an old TV. You can't even play smash properly on a new TV
Chase Cruz
>Compares two areas at absolutely different points in the game
Jordan Hughes
Ys Origin. Area is fun as fuck and is capped off with a great boss.
Levi Morris
This is one of my favorite levels in any game, but it's not like an underwater stage or anything. It's largely aesthetic, though there are some parts that it applies directly to gameplay.
Nolan Powell
>People say the 64 games aged horribly only literal retards say that
