Truly the holy tribunal of objective ratings. Halo was slow and forgiving compared to fast-paced arena shooters of the time, which was more welcoming to newcomers. Being a launch title also helped it greatly.

Which was inexplicable, at least with regards to the single player campaign, featuring some of the most mind-numbingly boring level design ever featured in a notable game as well as some other bad design descisions. I never played the multiplayer much and I suppose that was the real draw.

My first FPS was Wolfenstein 3D. I still count Halo I for PC as one of my favorite games of all time.
