I first played Summertime Saga a few weeks ago. I put my preconceptions aside and focused on the game itself. I wanted to legitimately see if it was worthwhile to play. I've played many crappy patreon beta beta alpha prototypes and been pleasantly surprised for the five minutes it took to beat them. And I found that Summertime Saga was simply not a good game. It started off promising, with an interesting premise, and quickly went downhill. I honestly couldn't believe that it had been in development for so long. It takes active effort to make a game that lazily.

That's why everyone hates Summertime Saga. Because it's a buggy grindy mess with little content and it's making way too much money for there to be any excuse. The update rate is way too slow, the gameplay is amateurish, and there aren't enough good points to outweigh any of that.

This isn't a flash game on newgrounds 10 years ago. It gets held to higher standards. And, frankly, flash games on newgrounds 10 years ago were higher quality.
