I've put off buying this for years, as I didn't want to get burned on yet another bad JRPG, but it looks so CHARMING
So, what's the verdict?

>Is Ni No Kuni good?
No.
It's a shitty monster collector game like a third rate digimon world knockoff.
The literal ONLY thing the game has going for it is the art style, which looks like something from studio ghibli or something
It's good.
>No
>Yes
T-Thanks
It's shit besides the artstyle shock which lasts a whole ten minutes. Grindy as fuck and magic system makes no fucking sense because reasons.
If you want a bright cheery adventure there really weren't many else besides something like Tales of xillia or Eternal Sonata or something. Also, snail mail rent and piracy is a thing, you don't have to buy a game to try it out.
>people have different opinins
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW
>Also, snail mail rent and piracy is a thing, you don't have to buy a game to try it out.
They also have Playstation Now, which lets you basically play every PS3 game ever made.
(has anybody ever actually used this???)
>So, what's the verdict?
as a Sonybro I have to admit that along with the Puppeteer they are my least favourite PS3 games in my collection. Both praises because of presentation and novelty and because "Only on PlayStation".
The "pokemon" aspect of the game is undercooked.
The AI of your team is retarded.
The story is fake Ghibli.
Oliver is an insufferable little shit throughout the game.
Hopefully the sequel will be better.
I liked it because it felt like a playable Ghibli movie, but the gameplay is trash, even by JRPG standards, and the leveling and evolution mechanics of your monsters is by far the worst I've seen in these kinds of games.
What was the 'another bad JRPG' that you got burned on?
I think that was literally the last JRPG I ever played. I'm done.
i thought the game was great, all the cities looked pretty sick, its a pretty wholesome rpg
cant wait for the second one
what game
I liked it a lot. I am clueless about the party AI complaints because I set the girl to "keep me healthy" and swaine to "do nothing" and constantly swapped back and forth between oliver and swaine because the pseudo-turn-based combat made it easy to do.
Game is fun if you enjoy JRPGs. If you don't then don't bother.
The story is somewhat kiddy but has some dark twists.
The Wizard's Companion is one of the coolest things ever to immerse you into the world.
>I'm going to play NNK to cure my shitty jrpg burnout
>Game is fun if you enjoy JRPGs
no. In all honestly I would put it behind SO4 which at the very least has a great battle system and great combos and boobs. Ni no kuni is a 40 hour borefest. The characters are not interesting Ghibli characters. They are childish as fuck in a bad way. Not innocent just retarded. The game has one good thing, the revelation of The Dark Djin. NOT FUCKING WORTH IT. just watch a summary of the story on youtube.
Final Fantasy XIII was better than it so take that as you will.
It was the first game I ever Platinumed. I really enjoyed it, the start is pretty slow but I really enjoyed the artstyle and the voice acting. The combat was a bit odd at first, but I got used to it and started enjoying it, even got me to buy White Knight Chronicles because I wanted more of that shit. I'd suggest taking the leap and pick it up, its only like $20 anymore, not much of an investment at all.
The game is a 45 hours long tutorial only play it if you have a high tolerance to jrpg plots and love the art style.
>what game
Ni No Kuni.
I probably played it 4 or 5 years ago, and when I finished it I was like that's it I'm fucking done with JRPGs
>its only like $20 anymore, not much of an investment at all.
this is one of the MOST retarded things I hear people say. how on earth do you weight 20 bucks again 40 FUCKING HOURS of your life and call that a smaller investment.
Ni no kuni is not a good game. you have been warned by the people who got burned.
>The game has one good thing, the revelation of The Dark Djin.
THE MAIN BAD GUY IS ACTUALLY YOU FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION
really
if it isnt a game you would enjoy, you wouldn't spend 40 hours in it. Thats why I'm saying $20 isn't much to go and say "well, i dont like this" especially if OP is actually interested in it.
Oh ok, I thought you were OP. The question still remains, what other game was OP talking about?

It's a game that starts off fun but steadily gets worse due to tedious side quests, combat that never evolves and a broken pokemon system in which evolved pokemon start out weaker. Also the party AI is hot garbage.
>instead of trying to improve and build on the familiar system in 2, they're just ditching it altogether
Great opening and first half, shit second half and end. Basically, once Oliver becomes stronger than the familiar, it starts to become shit because it becomes better to spam his strongest magic and wait for your MP to recharge than to actually use strategy. Also, also, the monster designs aren't bad, but it would be nice to see bigger creatures, maybe have a 4th evolution or something.
Feels like they mixed DQVIII with Pokemon but made it worse than either
Seriously, was this shit made on the same engine as DQVIII? Level-5 worked on both
The overworld map and alchemy pot systems are pretty much lifted straight from DQVIII and the graphics look similar outside of the ghibli cutscenes
I'll try to give you my best non-spoiler assessment.
It is incredibly charming! However, the charm the game sells you up front actually dwindles away as you progress through the game. All of the cutscenes and character interactions for the first 5-10 hours are voice acted dialogue. The characters are initially intriguing, and the basic premise of the game (traveling to fairy world to mend IRL people's broken hearts) are great conceptually.
However, around the time you're able to travel off the main land, the game gives off this feeling of being rushed or incomplete. Gone are the voice acting and epic cutscenes. The characters you meet seem to be carbon copies of previous characters you meet. By the final 1/3rd or so of the game, it reverts back to it's original charm and speeds up quite a bit, wrapping the story up incredibly well. It's just that 50% or so of the middle of the game that's such a slog to get through.
In terms of gameplay, a lot of it has been touched on. You only really have full control of your character. Your pokemon and teammates are kind of on a "gambit" like system ala Final Fantasy 12, and will autonomously fill the role you designate to them. This can be INCREDIBLY frustrating if you need them to prioritize healing/abilities in the midst of battle. The pokemon system is incredibly obtuse and unbalanced. A handful of pokemon are CLEARLY better than the rest, and if you're stuck with the wrong team you will get bashed in by the AI no matter how much you grind (and you will be grinding a lot). You may stumble upon one enemy that gives out ridiculous amounts of EXP, and when you find that enemies location, it's almost impossible to not want to fight it and make the game trivial. The side quests are basically boiled down to fetch quests. "Talk to ____", "Find ____ item and deliver it", etc.
I might be sounding harsh, but the game can be quite enjoyable at times. I certainly think it's worth the
Continued
However, I'm of the opinion the game is not worth the 40 hours it will take to beat the mainline story, considering there are so many better games out there in the world to play.
I really wish the game was just a movie. The premise and characters/world are soooo charming.
Oh yeah, and Drippy, your fairy partner in crime, is hilarious.
I love almost everything about it. The art and music is lovely. Oliver is the most adorable hero and you want him to succeed.
But the game is boring. Encounters are too slow and the common battle music is probably the worst track in the game and you hear it multiple times per hour.
Even if you play games for story or experience ect, you'll be challenged to sit through the boring gameplay to enjoy the good parts
>Some of the most powerful and rare items in the game are locked behind casino mino games that cheat
Is it playable without caveats in RPCS3 yet? Last I checked it crashed at the end of cutscenes if you didn't skip them.
This game has been in my backlog forever. This thread has just ensured it's going to stay that way for another 20 years. Goddamnit.
This game is the reason I never get hyped for game releases anymore. Fuck Level 5. Return of the JRPG my ass.
It has the worst combat system of any JRPG I've ever played. And I've played a lot of JRPGs.
the combat is trash, i hope in the sequel it's better
there are no good jrpgs
