The games are great, run well, look beautiful on the screen and portable mode is great.
It's an all around great device with already multiple awesome games.

So easy to just relax and enjoy games. I don't really give a damn about the performance. That's why I have a PC. I consider all consoles to be lack luster as far as performance. Only reason I would want a console is just for an exclusive.

Contrary to popular belief the layman just wants to play good games and doesn't care about framerates, if he even knows what they are. He knows about resolutions though to the point that higher is better since marketing, but both the Switch in home console mode and PS4 output 1080p at best.

The Wii U had a garbage library, especially at first. No one's going to buy a console that doesn't have any worthwhile games, the Switch at least had one on launch. Also as far as gimmicks go, the Switch has a better one than the Wii U did. With the Wii U we got a stupid tablet controller with a 3 hour battery life that only worked within a dozen feet of the unit. The Switch is a handheld that you can just drop in a slot and switch immediately to play on your tv. It also helps that we have had confirmations of Pokemon, Fire Emblem, and Metroid Prime 4, on top of Zelda and Mario. I've owned Nintendo consoles ever since the NES and even I didn't pick up a Wii U until Smash 4 dropped.

You underestimate portability as a selling point. You can play it on a widescreen TV then take it out so you can keep playing when you go to bed or take a shit. The Wii-U and PS4/Vita cross-saves were half-steps towards this but the Switch fully realized it. It's the most AMERICAN model to play games, because it allows the utmost FREEDOM in how you play, which no other console does.
That along with an incredibly strong launch year for games. (Not all of these are fantastic but the volume is what's of note)
