Red pill me on why people still play Melee over Sm4sh.
Sm4sh and Melee
higher skill ceiling
They spend 10 years learning all the l-cancelling and wave dashing. So when the next game restricted those things, they threw a fit and went back to Melee. Smash 4 is more like Smash 64 and Brawl had a baby. So some people modded Brawl to be more like Melee and others just stuck with Melee.
Of course, they still ignore how half the roster is horrible and there's no one stage that works well with every character. But playing "competitive" fighting is not about balanced or fun.
The movement is super fun and rewarding. None of the games after melee retained the physics system or sense of character control.
People like things. Sometimes those things are video games.
They play very differently, some people like one, some people like the other
The movement and physics feel better. It's faster paced.
Autism
Meleefags love the autistic technical depth of their game
4fags love the amount of characters that are actually viable
As a Project Mfag, it's the best of both worlds. Shh, don't tell anyone though
It's more fun to watch, has nostalgia appeal, and is waaay faster paced than 4.
Honestly, they don't even need to make a "Melee 2.0" for the next Smash. As long as it's faster than Melee (or just as fast) and fun to watch, then it will blow up in popularity higher than Melee.
They are vastly different games. About the only things that can cross over between both of them is very basic and general smash knowledge. For example if neither of you play Melee but one of you is much smarter/better than the other in Smash 4 the superior player is more than likely going to win in Melee too.
Even moving around in both games is different and takes a lot of getting used to. Smash 4 is generally more neutral heavy and is more defensive while Melee is more offensive and has a broader combo game.
I don't follow
personal Preference
Sm4sh is slower paced
Melee requires higher apm and more tech skill
Melee is fun, Sm4sh isn't.
smash 64 and project m are the most fun smash games prove me wrong
Autism.
you're going to get a lot of "autism" responses from people who don't really play smash. The truth is that both 64 and Melee have in droves what separates Smash Bros from every other fighting game, while Brawl and Smash 4 play more like conventional fighting games than the first two.
Smash bros, in particular the first two, have very interesting combo and edgeguarding mechanics. Instead of having to bring your opponent down to 0 hp to win a round, you can take stocks in any number of ways. If you watch the best 64 and Melee players, you see them take their opponents stocks at low percent VERY often. You hardly ever see this happen in Brawl or 4 because the developers made the ledgehogging and recovery mechanics far more forgiving. Recoveries automatically "sweet spot" the ledge so you need less precision to recover without getting hit, and players can no longer steal the ledge from each other. The combo mechanics in smash 64 and melee were also much better. Players change up the way they offensively play based on the health of their opponents and DI mixups, allowing huge punishes to come to players who wisely use many different moves in their character's repertoire to maximize punishes. Compare Smash 64 and Melee in this regard against Brawl and 4, where 80% of a match in the latter two consists of players spamming the same two or three moves over and over while weaving back and forth in the air. Because most moves have so little hitstun, you can't string together big combos off of most hits, so you're better off just spamming the move that has the best range and quickest animation.

which one looks fun to you?
I feel like the vast majority of people who still bash on the Melee vs Smash4 issue are people who don't even play Melee anymore. They're just still there for the "storyline" this game has, and you can tell on big event threads like EVO and Genesis.
Usually they're shared threads, so you have people talking about Smash4 while in the midst of "lel tr4sh xd" shitposting on part of Meleefags, since Smash 4 usually comes first. Now, to some extent, this is needed for Smash 4 threads to stay alive, most threads for solo Smash 4 events live for about an hour if they're lucky, but then again, so do Melee event threads that don't have the strong presence of their so-called "gods". However, when these players do show up, people here, far from talking about the game or what's happening, spend most of the thread basically gossiping and spewing memes about players.
And really, there is no point in arguing about what's just a preference for a game, many Smash 4 players enjoy watching, or even playing Melee, and vice versa.
As for why people prefer Melee, it's just faster and more offense-oriented. It's not hard to see why people would prefer that, and while some MUs in 4 allow for such scenarios to some extent (basically every MU between the top 10 that doesn't include Sonic, Rosa or Bayo), the truth is 4 just gave to many of its characters very strong defensive options, making it thus a much more defensive game
I just want to add to my post that anyone who boasts or whines about "APM" in one game or another is an insufferable faggot
>posts a nearly 4 years old match when the game has been regularly patched and plays very differently than it did at release
average meleefag's intellectual honesty desu
because Melee is quite appreciably different and has settled into a great fast technical metagame that is rewarding to play even if it never changes, like irl sports
>complains about the video date on a youtube video instead of addressing any of the posts points
honestly didn't know that because
1. I haven't play smash 4 since its release
2. none of the other smash games have ever needed "balance updates"
3. I sincerely doubt that the game plays "much differently" save for the upper echelon of characters rotating a little bit
that's some argumentative capacity you have, btw
Melee is more akin to an actual fighting game compared to Smash 4.
The time spent in the lab learning shit in melee pays off really well.
Melee also doesn't have 7 frame input delay by default.
Melee also doesn't have patches, so the game and everything in it will stay consistent.
Basically Melee is just faster, more consistent, more rewarding for some players.
Also Melee players for the most part are far less mentally disgusting than say Smash 4 players from my experience.
You admitted you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about
The shieldstun, roll invincibility on the entire roster, hitlag on shield and a wealth of other universal mechanics have been touched upon several times since release. I don't understand why you think you can make any kind of guess as to what kind of effect that'd have on gameplay without even knowing that. That kind of intellectual dishonesty is the hallmark of a fanboy that doesn't even care to research his arguements. Subsequently, there is nothing in your post worth engaging. It boils down to "I like this thing more", which is fine in itself but the attempt at talking about a game you don't even know shit about is pathetic and I just had to point that out because I could tell you didnt know shit from the fact that you decided to pull a diddy mirror out of your ass, the kind of matchup meleefags that don't play the game love to meme about.
Stay fucking free.
Playing Melee with a group:
>someone actually manages to land the almighty falcon punch on a friend who has 100% hp
>a loud and very satisfying thud is heard, almost like someone with a boxing glove punched a dry wall
>victim flies off the stage and out of the screen at 100 mph
>the room goes nuts
Playing Brawl or Sm4sh with a group:
>someone actually manages to land the almighty falcon punch on a friend who has 100% hp
>a quiet and unsatisfying noise is (barely) heard, almost sounds like someone scraping a dry wall with the edge of a piece of paper
>victim gently floats away towards the top corner of the screen where they’re least likely to die
>doesn’t die
>no one reacts
That’s why
It's not as fun and has less shit to do. Wait, come back.
